2011 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Pat Devlin, QB, Delaware

by Cory J. Bonini on April 21, 2011 @ 15:22:25 PDT

Delaware senior quarterback Pat Devlin follows in Joe Flacco's footsteps, but that is about where the similarities end for this 2011 NFL Draft prospect and the Baltimore Ravens' passer.

Devlin passed for 3,032 yards, 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions in 2010. He has added seven career rushing scores.

Strengths

  • Smart with the football (only three interceptions thrown in 384 attempts last year)
  • Accurate and touch (completed 68.0 percent of his passes in 2010 and 64.0 in '09)
  • Quick release - prototypical throwing motion
  • Pat Devlin, draft prospect
    He's no Joe Flacco
    Keeps his eyes downfield
  • Enough mobility to maneuver in the pocket
  • Quality size (6-foot-3 3/8, 225 pounds)

Weaknesses

  • Primarily passes from shotgun
  • Locks eyes on his first read too often
  • Project quarterback with an average arm
  • Questionable footwork - tends to get sloppy, leading to sailing passes
  • Inconsistent from week to week

Expected draft placement

Devlin is a midround prospect and will need some time to be groomed for a potential starting job. His upside is limited at the next level, but he has the tools to become a serviceable starting signal caller in a few years.

The Penn State transfer has publicly drawn interest from the Cincinnati Bengals
