Quarterback

QB | Blaine Gabbert | Jacksonville Jaguars | Draft
The Jacksonville Jaguars' selection of QB Blaine Gabbert in the NFL Draft puts head coach Jack Del Rio's future at considerably greater risk. Del Rio, who was essentially given a playoff-or-else ultimatum by owner Wayne Weaver in January, will now have a much greater challenge this season to get the Jaguars into the postseason. The Jaguars gave up a second-round pick to acquire Gabbert, which means the team - barring another trade up - will forfeit two prime chances to beef up a poor defense.

QB | Jimmy Clausen | Carolina Panthers | Draft
Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said he remains confident in QB Jimmy Clausen's abilities despite the addition of QB Cam Newton in the NFL Draft. "Jimmy is a good football player and I believe he will play in this league." Hurney said. "It's a critical position and all you have to do is look back to our recent seasons and you need depth at that position. I know this: Jimmy is going to come in and compete."

QB | Marc Bulger | Baltimore Ravens | Draft, Free Agents
The Arizona Cardinals could have a new quarterback for the 2011 season by Monday, May 2. The team is expected to pursue Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger. However, the team could also test the trade waters and make offers to the Philadelphia Eagles for QB Kevin Kolb, to the Denver Broncos for QB Kyle Orton or the Cincinnati Bengals for QB Carson Palmer. The Cardinals still could draft a quarterback in the second round of the NFL Draft with the No. 38 overall pick. However, the feeling inside the organization has been that head coach Ken Whisenhunt would prefer to rely on a veteran to run the offense.

QB | Ryan Mallett | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett said he was disappointed about not being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Mallett, however, vows to make an impact for the team that selects him. "Whatever team is going to be smart enough to pick me, we're going to make something happen," Mallett said. "I just want to play ball, that's what I say. I'm not disappointed. I mean I'm disappointed, but I have a chance to play in the NFL, so I'm not too disappointed."

QB | Christian Ponder | Minnesota Vikings | Draft, Fantasy
The Minnesota Vikings looked to trade down in the first round of the NFL Draft before standing pat and selecting QB Christian Ponder with the 12th pick overall. Vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman didn't want to pass on a young, high-character quarterback who is "extremely bright" with experience in a pro-style offense.

While some felt the Vikings reached and Ponder would have been available later, Spielman disagreed. "We felt very confident where we graded him. We graded him where it was worthy at that spot," Spielman said.

Head coach Leslie Frazier also endorsed the selection. "We took a guy that I'm most comfortable with. I feel good about it," Frazier said.

QB | Jake Locker | Tennessee Titans | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Tennessee Titans rookie QB Jake Locker, the team's first-round selection, will be given a chance to immediately compete for the starting job, according to head coach Mike Munchak. "I think, as we said before, when you draft a guy this high obviously we think a lot of him. We think he'll have the opportunity to come in and compete right away," Munchak said. He said if everyone feels Locker is the best fit later in the year to be their starting quarterback they won't hold his rookie title against him.

Offensive coordinator Chris Palmer spoke highly of Locker and noted he tried to coach Locker on some initial things, including footwork.

QB | David Garrard | Jacksonville Jaguars | Draft, Fantasy
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio and general manager Gene Smith stressed that QB David Garrard is still the starter despite the drafting of QB Blaine Gabbert at No. 10 overall in the NFL Draft Thursday, April 28. "Out intention is to have David as our quarterback and have Blaine come in and push David," Del Rio said. "David is our quarterback," Smith said. "We've got Luke McCown behind him. He's a proven starter."

QB | Alex Smith | San Francisco 49ers | Free Agents
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said impending free-agent QB Alex Smith will report to the team's facility Friday, April 29.

QB | Tim Tebow | Denver Broncos | Fantasy
Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway said he was impressed when he watched QB Tim Tebow in the last three games of the season this year but understands the team needs to be committed and patient with Tebow if they want him to succeed. "Let's put it this way, I'm his biggest fan," Elway said. "He's one of those guys who - if he comes out and is the player we hope he can be - then we're in pretty darn good shape. He's a great ambassador for us as a team. He realizes, and I've told him: The bottom line is, 'You can do all those things and make all those plays that a lot of guys can't do, and that's something you have that they don't - but you have to realize for us to be champions, you have to be able to win it from the pocket and make all those throws from the pocket.'" Elway said Tebow will have to improve his accuracy if he wants to play well in the NFL.
