Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant said Monday, July 11, that he feels there will be an open competition for the starting tailback job once the lockout is resolved. "From what I've heard, that''s the conversation that was told to me," Grant said in a radio interview. "I do believe there will be competition, which is fine. I'm all for that." Grant is expected to compete with RB James Starks, who emerged as the featured back during the team's postseason run.

The lawyer of the mother of free-agent WR Terrell Owens (Bengals) says the NFL star has paid the child support he owes, so she is dropping her attempt to hold him in contempt of court. Owens is a free agent and can't sign with a team until the NFL lockout is resolved, although a knee injury might keep him out a while.

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward reportedly failed field sobriety tests during a traffic stop in Atlanta just before 2:30am Saturday, July 9. Ward swayed back and forth and became agitated during the sobriety tests, according to a police report. Ward could not keep his balance and mixed up and omitted letters in the alphabet, according to the report. Ward's lawyer refutes the statement and says his client was not impaired by alcohol and he fully cooperated with authorities. Ward's court date is set for Oct. 6.

DL | Cliff Avril | Detroit Lions | Free Agents

Avril's agent said he and the team "wer in the infancy stages" of talks regarding a long-term deal before the lockout began in March. Philadelphia Eagles DL Brandon Graham (knee) has been doing most of his rehab work in Los Angeles, as he recovers from a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. Graham said he will visit renowned Dr. James Andrews this week and hopes to be cleared for practice in September.

Buffalo Bills LB Paul Posluszny, who might become an unrestricted free agent with the new collective bargaining agreement, said he has thought about a possible reunion with former defensive coordinator and current New York Giants DC Perry Fewell. "Definitely, because of that connection," Posluszny said in a radio interview. Posluszny has said re-signing with Buffalo is a priority.

The San Diego Chargers are believed to consider impending free-agent LB Kevin Burnett as the top choice to re-sign among the their three free agent inside linebackers. Impending free-agent LBs Stephen Cooper and Brandon Siler are considered secondary options to re-sign.
