QB | Daunte Culpepper | UFL | Free Agents
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday, Aug. 16, that even though the team did not offer free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper (UFL) after his workout, that option is still not off the table. "I wouldn't rule that out," Harbaugh said.

QB | Alex Smith | San Francisco 49ers | Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday, Aug. 16, that QB Alex Smith has widened the lead in the competition for the starting quarterback job over QB Colin Kaepernick in the past two days of practice. "There's some separation there," Harbaugh said. "Alex has done a fine job. But Kaep is doing a phenomenal job. He is going to be one heck of a talent and one heck of a player."

QB | Eli Manning | New York Giants | Fantasy
New York Giants QB Eli Manning thinks he is a top-caliber quarterback, enough so to put himself in the same class as New England Patriots QB Tom Brady. "I consider myself in that class and Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he's a great player and what you've seen with him is he's gotten better every year and he started off winning championships and I think he's a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships," Manning said.

Dallas Cowboys QB Jon Kitna (back) is dealing with a sore lower back and it is unknown if he will practice Tuesday, Aug. 16. Head coach Jason Garrett said Kitna is day-to-day.

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is hoping the team gives him a new long-term deal before the season opener. He is likely to be seeking a deal similar to Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams' five-year, $43 million deal, which included $21 million in guarantees. "I hope they do (reward me)," Gore said. "If they don't, I'll become a free agent." Gore feels like his old self and is completely healthy.

RB | Montario Hardesty | Cleveland Browns | Injury, Fantasy
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) looked good when he returned to full practice Monday, Aug. 15. "It was good to see him out there," head coach Pat Shurmur said. "He made a couple nice runs. He caught the ball out of the backfield in some of the passing drills. He actually made a real nice catch." He is listed as the No. running back on the depth chart behind RB Peyton Hillis, but the team plans to bring Hardesty along slowly to make sure his knees are fully healthy for the season.

RB | Ryan Mathews | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the team's unquestioned featured back heading into the season, and he will be "on the field a lot," according to head coach Norv Turner. Mathews came into camp not in great shape, but has improved in every facet since. He is running patiently, protecting the ball, improving his pass protection and at catching passes. "I'm not as nervous," Mathews said. "It's my second year. I haven't been through my second year, but coming into this camp it shows me it's a lot different."

However, RB Mike Tolbert will share the load with Mathews in the backfield after he proved effective last year. "This game has become so physical," Turner said in the final week of 2010. "You see so many eight-man fronts, and you want to run the ball. It saves them for a season and for a career." So while Mathews will see plenty of time, Turner has indicated that the starting running back will be dictated by the defense and the situation of the game.

RB | Chris Johnson | Tennessee Titans | Fantasy
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak wants RB Chris Johnson in camp because he feels he is losing valuable time to mesh with his new teammates, such as QB Matt Hasselbeck. "He doesn't necessarily need book study," Munchak said. "He needs reps. He needs to be in the huddle. He needs to get to know the players. The quarterbacks (Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker) are both new. He's never been around them." Johnson wants to be paid around $30 million guaranteed and at least $10 million per year.

Fullback

FB | John Conner | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets FB John Conner is firmly entrenched as the starting fullback now that FB Tony Richardson is no longer with the team. Conner led RB Shonn Greene to his three longest runs during the preseason game Monday, Aug. 15. However, the presence of Conner will limit the number of times offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer can use WRs Santonio Holmes, Derrick Mason and Plaxico Burress in the same play.

FB | Mike Tolbert | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the team's unquestioned featured back heading into the season, and he will be "on the field a lot," according to head coach Norv Turner.

It saves them for a season and for a career."
