Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said Monday, Jan. 2, he would like the team to re-sign WR Stevie Johnson, who will be a free agent in the offseason. "If you look at what Steve has done with the two 1,000-yard seasons in a row, it's really the first two years Steve has played," Fitzpatrick said. "I feel like a lot of what I've done and a lot of the success I've had since I've been here has been because of him. And the success that he's had, a lot of it's been because of me ... I know that they know I want him back. He knows I want him back. He wants to be here. We'll see how it turns out. But I'm a better player with Stevie on my team. I feel he's a better player with me as his quarterback."

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay could not say with any certainty Monday, Jan. 2, whether or not there is any football left in QB Peyton Manning (neck). "I've always said that, first and foremost, it's a medical situation, a health situation," Irsay said. "Is it safe for him to go on the field? Is it something that he's healthy enough to resume his career? That to me has always been the most important decision. That's something we're continuing to see where we're at."

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said the team will have an open competition at quarterback between QBs Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker. "It wouldn't be fair to tell Jake Locker he wouldn't have an opportunity to play next year, that he was going to sit for another season," Munchak said. "I don't think Matt would want to hear that either. I think they are both competitive in that way. I think when the time comes, just like it was this past year, that Matt was the guy that was most ready to help us win, I think the same decision will be made next year."

Arizona Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) said he expects that he will have to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp. He believes he will undergo an extensive neurological exam in the next month to see if he is recovered from his concussion.

QB | John Skelton | Arizona Cardinals | Injury
Arizona Cardinals QB John Skelton (knee) will not need surgery on his injured knee and said doctors told him that rest should heal the injury. Skelton needed fluid drained out of his knee before the team's Week 17 game because of a problem with the bursa sac in his knee.


Running Back

RB | James Starks | Green Bay Packers | Injury
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) may not be ready to practice until next week; however, he is expected to be available for the team's opening playoff game.

RB | Michael Bush | Oakland Raiders | Free Agents
Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said he wants RB Michael Bush, a prospective free agent in the offseason, to return in 2012. "Would I love to have Michael Bush back? Yes. Are you kidding me? The guy is tremendous," Jackson said. "But Michael Bush is going to have some opportunities himself. Sometimes you're not in control of that, and I respect that. Michael loves it here and loves playing for the Raiders and being a part of this organization, but any young man in these situations, they're going to do whatever they think is best for themselves and their families."

RB | Darren McFadden | Oakland Raiders | Injury
Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said Monday, Jan. 2, that RB Darren McFadden (foot) had a mid-food sprain and he simply did not heal quick enough to play in the latter half of the season. "Yes. It took so long. But it is what I told you guys it was, a mid-foot sprain," Jackson said. "And everybody comes back from that differently. He has taken more time than other guys have. And it's unfortunate but that's the hand we were dealt."

Washington Redskins RB Tim Hightower said Monday, Jan. 2, that he wants to return. However, it is likely he will need to re-sign a one-year deal since he is coming off an injury. "It's very important, very important (to return)," Hightower said. "I love this organization. Coming back here I didn't realize how much it would mean to me coming back, being around your family and going places with the fans. It was special for me. This is somewhere I would like to play for a long time."

RB | Ronnie Brown | Philadelphia Eagles | Free Agents, Fantasy
Philadelphia Eagles RB Ronnie Brown averaged 3.2 yards per carry in his first season with the team. That was the worst average by an Eagles player on 40 or more carries since RB Michael Haddix averaged 2.7 yards per carry in 1984. He is scheduled to become a free agent, and is not expected back.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Dion Lewis carried nine times for 60 yards in the Week 17 game against the Washington Redskins, which was a breakthrough performance for the guy who is expected to be the primary backup to RB LeSean McCoy in 2012. He finished with 102 yards on 23 carries in his rookie season, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. In the past 25 years, only two Philadelphia rookie RBs Correll Buckhalter (4.5 - 2001) and Ryan Moats (5.1 - 2005) had a higher per-carry average, based on a minimum of 20 carries.

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (ankle) said Monday, Jan. 2, that his rehab is going well. He was still on crutches Monday and using a protective boot over his fractured left ankle. "Yeah, I'm doing fine just going along with what we planned," Murray said. "It's looking good."

RB | Rashard Mendenhall | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury, Fantasy
The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee) will be ready for training camp next August after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns. He is expected to have surgery in another week or two once the swelling in his right knee subsides.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman and RB John Clay are the only healthy backs on the team's roster heading into the Wild Card game Sunday, Jan. 8, against the Denver Broncos.

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said Monday, Jan. 2, that he is in favor of RB Matt Forte (knee) playing in the Pro Bowl. Forte missed the final four regular season games, but wants to play in the Pro Bowl. He isn't worried about being injured in the Pro Bowl. "The risk because of injury? I mean, I could get injured walking out the door," Forte said. "The Pro Bowl, this is my first time making it, I want to go out there and be on the field. You can't worry about injuries all the time."

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) said he is 90 percent certain that he will have to undergo surgery on his injured knee. He is not sure what the problem but his ligaments are not the problem.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said FB Spencer Larsen (knee) suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in Week 17.


Wide Receiver

New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum was noncommittal about a return for pending free-agent WR Plaxico Burress, who caught 45 passes for 612 yards with eight touchdowns this season. "He did a great job for us," Tannenbaum said. "I thought his blocking, he did a really good job with that. Obviously, he helped us in the red zone ... And he was a real pro. He's really an interesting guy and he was a really good teammate. Free agency is a couple of months away, and we'll look at everything."

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Monday, Jan. 2, that WR Leonard Hankerson (hip) should be fully recovered from a torn labrum in his right hip by April 1. Shanahan said Hankerson won't require surgery, and just needs "rest and treatment." He should be ready to participate in offseason workouts.

San Francisco 49ers WR Kyle Williams (concussion) has passed his concussion tests and will be available to play in the playoffs.

WR | Santonio Holmes | New York Jets | Fantasy
The New York Jets could consider releasing WR Santonio Holmes this offseason but he is scheduled to make a guaranteed $7 million in 2012 and is scheduled to receive $19 million over the next two season, which would be costly if the team decided to release him. Holmes has an addition $7 million in future salary guaranteed on the second day of the second day of the 2012 league year.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki (knee) said his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament is going well and he plans on taking part in offseason workouts.

TE | Scott Chandler | Buffalo Bills | Injury
Buffalo Bills TE Scott Chandler (knee) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on the knee injury he suffered in Week 17. He said the knee was sore but does not think he will need surgery.


Place Kicker

PK | Phil Dawson | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
The Cleveland Browns might use their franchise tag on PK Phil Dawson for the second consecutive season. Dawson is open to staying in Cleveland and seeing things through. "I don't want to be Moses," Dawson said Monday, Jan. 2. "I don't want to lead people right to the edge and not get to go in. There's going to be so many thing, I can't prioritize them at this point. We just lost to the Steelers 20 hours ago and that still hurts. I need to get home and eat a burrito."


Offensive Tackle

Buffalo Bills OT Demetrius Bell (knee) underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. He said he will be completely recovered in three or four weeks.

Updating a previous report, the Denver Broncos have placed OG Chris Kuper (leg) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2011 season.

OG | Matt Slauson | New York Jets | Injury
New York Jets OG Matt Slauson (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his injured shoulder. Slauson said the injury happened last season but it has not affected his play until near the end of this season.

OG | Daryn Colledge | Arizona Cardinals | Injury
Arizona Cardinals OG Daryn Colledge (elbow) will undergo offseason surgery to clean some things out of his elbow.


Defensive Line

DL | Mike Patterson | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury
Philadelphia Eagles DL Mike Patterson (head) plans to have surgery to remove the arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that caused a training camp seizure. The surgery will take place "in the next couple of weeks." He said the recovery time can range from one to six months, but he expects to be ready for training camp.

DL | Kevin Williams | Minnesota Vikings | Injury
Minnesota Vikings DL Kevin Williams (knee) played through pain this season, so he will have his knee examined in the next few days. "We'll get it checked out here and try to see if anything is still wrong with the knee and just go from there," Williams said Monday, Jan. 2. Williams is due to make $7 million in base salary in 2012, and he said he has not been approached on re-structuring his deal and perhaps adding more years to it.

Philadelphia Eagles LB Jamar Chaney (stinger) said Monday, Jan. 2, that he suffered a stinger in Week 17 against the Washington Redskins, and not a concussion as head coach Andy Reid reported Sunday, Jan. 1.

LB | DeMarcus Ware | Dallas Cowboys | Transaction
Dallas Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware finished a half-sack short of 20 for the season after recording 1 1/2 sacks in the Week 17 game against the New York Giants. Ware is signed through 2015, and he enters next season with a career total of 99.5. He might come close to, or eclipse, the franchise record of 114 sacks held by former DL Harvey Martin.

LB | Brian Urlacher | Chicago Bears | Injury
Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher (knee) suffered damage to his medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament but is not expected to need surgery. It is believed he is facing 10 weeks of rehab to recover from the injuries.

LB | Barrett Ruud | Tennessee Titans | Injury
Tennessee Titans LB Barrett Ruud (shoulder) said he is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery next week.

LB | Mark Herzlich | New York Giants | Injury
New York Giants TE Jake Ballard (knee) and LB Mark Herzlich (ankle) will run Tuesday, Jan. 3, to test out their injuries.

LB | Stephen Nicholas | Atlanta Falcons | Injury
Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said LB Stephen Nicholas (toe) is considered doubtful for the Wild Card playoff game.


Cornerback

Tennessee Titans CB Cortland Finnegan, who is scheduled to become a free agent in the offseason, said he wants to remain with the team; however, he is unsure if he'll receive a new offer from the Titans when his contract expires. If Finnegan is given the franchise tag, he'll be tendered with a one-year contract for $10.6 million. "My heart is here, I don't even want to get that far," Finnegan said.

CB | Terrence Wheatley | Tennessee Titans | Transaction
The Tennessee Titans signed RB Herb Donaldson, OG Ryan Durand, DL Pannel Egboh, TE Cameron Graham, WR James Kirkendoll, OT Troy Kropog, WR Michael Preston and CB Terrence Wheatley to reserve/futures contracts Monday, Jan. 2. All eight players were on the team's practice squad in 2011.

CB | Antoine Winfield | Minnesota Vikings | Injury
Minnesota Vikings CB Antoine Winfield (collarbone) continues to rehab after breaking his collarbone in a game against the Green Bay Packers in mid-November. He fully expects to return in 2012, and said he wants to play out the final two years of his contract and then retire. "That will get me to year 15," he said. "I expect to hang them up after that."


Strong Safety

SS | Kurt Coleman | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury
Philadelphia Eagles SS Kurt Coleman (biceps) said Monday, Jan. 2, that he has full mobility back in his arm after a partial biceps strain. Coleman expects to be able to participate in all of the team's offseason programs. "It's only about a matter of a couple of weeks, and then I'll be back to normal," Coleman said.

SS | Tyrell Johnson | Minnesota Vikings | Injury
Minnesota Vikings SS Tyrell Johnson (hamstring) said Monday, Jan. 2, that he will begin rehab work Tuesday, Jan. 3. He was placed on Injured Reserve late in November when he tore his hamstring tendon off the bone in a game against the Atlanta Falcons.

SS | Husain Abdullah | Minnesota Vikings | Injury
Minnesota Vikings SS Husain Abdullah (concussion) said he wants to play next season but will consider retirement if doctors tell him his future may be affected by the concussions he has suffered. Abdullah sustained two concussions this season and has had four in the past two seasons.


Free Safety

FS | LaRon Landry | Washington Redskins | Injury
Washington Redskins FS LaRon Landry (Achilles') has yet to decide whether or not he will have surgery on his trouble Achilles', according to head coach Mike Shanahan. A foot specialist recommended surgery three weeks ago, but Landry, who is a pending free agent, wanted to get more opinions.

FS | Eric Smith | New York Jets | Injury
New York Jets FS Eric Smith (knee) said he played the last five games of the season with a torn meniscus and will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday, Jan. 4, to find out the extent of the damage.
