People close to Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning (neck) do not believe he'll resume his playing career. The nerves in Manning's arm are not healing as quickly as hoped and do not appear to be progressing at enough of a rate to indicate that he will play again, according to two sources with knowledge of Manning's rehabilitation from neck surgery. The vertebrae in his neck that were fused have healed as expected and Manning began throwing in December. However, he hasn't shown improvement in velocity on his passes, and the two sources fear he likely never will again.

"Since I've been here, I fell in love with the fans and the city and the people that live here. They've been nothing but 100 percent supportive through everything when I talk to them. It's good to have a second family backing me like that."

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots owner Rober Kraft said he hopes the team will be able to reach a contract agreement with impending free-agent WR Wes Welker this offseason. Kraft said the team wants Welker back and Welker has expressed interest to be back.

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Jerome Simpson pleaded not guilty to marijuana trafficking in Kenton County Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 30. Authorities tracked a package with 2 1/2 pounds of marijuana in it to Simpson's house and a search of the home turned up six more pounds of marijuana, smoking pipes and scales.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (ankle) said during Media Day Tuesday, Jan. 31, that his status for Super Bowl XLVI is uncertain. "I don't know yet," Gronkowski said. "We're going day by day. Making new steps every day, feeling better every day. That's a positive sign and you just want to keep going in the right direction. I want to be out there with the team obviously. I want to help out the team obviously. Just taking it step by step, getting better every single day." Gronkowski said his walking boot was gone for good, and he will spend the day with trainers.

The Buffalo Bills may be interested in signing restricted free-agent OGs Chad Rinehart and Kraig Urbik to long-term deal this offseason but they likely will not be high priorities for extensions.
