SP Yu Darvish makes Cactus League debut

Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux
Anything for Maddux to worry about?

The right-hander seemed to have great command of the five different pitches he reportedly threw in his two innings against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. He allowed two hits, both doubles, each hit hard on a fastball up. Richard Durrett (ESPNDallas.com), with the help of observers and scouts, broke down his two stanzas thoroughly. He told The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant that heavy wind aided his secondary stuff, too.

Obviously, when Darvish makes a mistake, he'll pay, just like any other hurler would, and in Texas, a hurler pays dearly. Once teams collect tape of him, perhaps hitters around the league will learn what to lay off and when. He supposedly adapts quickly, but there's a steeper learning curve in the U.S.

But, it's clear that his fantasy downside probably isn't equivalent to that of a below-average mixed-league pitcher. No question, his stuff is major-league caliber, and he knows how to retire batters of that quality. There's significant upside here and moderate risk, probably about like there is with Brandon Morrow.
