Fantasy football players in the news

QB | Tarvaris Jackson | Seattle Seahawks | Fantasy
Although Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson is expected to receive the first-team reps at the start of training camp, the team's quarterback competition will last well into camp and preseason games. Head coach Pete Carroll will be watching Jackson, QB Matt Flynn and QB Russell Wilson compete for the job at that time.

QB | Tim Tebow | New York Jets | Free Agents, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Free-agent WR Plaxico Burress said he believes QB Tim Tebow could replace QB Mark Sanchez by midseason as the team's starting quarterback. "It's a possibility, you can't rule it out," Burress said. "I mean, they did bring him in for a reason. I think he's going to make Mark Sanchez a better quarterback. When they bring in somebody at your position, he's going to compete for it." Burress reportedly doesn't think much of Sanchez as a QB, and he told friends late last season he was no fan of Sanchez.

QB | Colt McCoy | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Cleveland Browns are expected to trade QB Colt McCoy at some point, but they are likely to make a decision on QB Seneca Wallace, too. The team drafted QB Brandon Weeden as the presumed starter, and the club needs to figure out whether they want to pay Wallace $2.4 million for the upcoming season.

Running Back

RB | Phillip Tanner | Dallas Cowboys | Draft, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner will try to hold off a charge from RB Lance Dunbar for the third running back job in training camp. Both players are the result of scouting work done in Dallas Day workouts, the team's pre-draft workouts for Dallas-area prospects.

RB | Sammy Morris | Free Agent | Free Agents
The New England Patriots are not expected to sign free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Cowboys) unless they have an injury at the position.

Wide Receiver

WR | Calvin Johnson | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson has looked stronger and faster during offseason practices, according to WR Nate Burleson. "I know it sounds corny," Burleson said. "You wouldn't think a guy like that could come back and get better, but he does ... That's pretty much all that counts. He probably dropped a little bit of weight, so he's in extremely good shape. I see him in the weight room, so I know he's stronger. And on the field he's yards ahead of us in conditioning drills; he's still running past guys easily."

WR | Cole Beasley | Dallas Cowboys | Fantasy
The Dallas Cowboys hold their annual Dallas Day workouts before the draft for players with ties to the local area. Former WR Patrick Crayton is the biggest success story from past workouts, but current RB Phillip Tanner is an example on the current roster of a player who caught the eye of the team in Dallas Day workouts. Four players were inked as a result of these workouts this year. LB Adrian Hamilton is a pass rusher who has a chance to make the team. CB Isaac Madison earned some reps with the first-team nickel package, and will be fighting for a fifth cornerback job in training camp. WR Cole Beasley might be another option in the pass game, while RB Lance Dunbar will be fighting for the No. 3 running back job. Dunbar will also get a chance to impress on kickoff returns.

WR | Percy Harvin | Minnesota Vikings | Fantasy
Even if the Minnesota Vikings had a change of heart and decided to trade WR Percy Harvin, don't look for the New York Jets to be serious contenders for his services. First, the club drafted WR Stephen Hill in the second round, so it's unlikely they'll add another big-time receiver. Second, the team wants to have a more run-oriented - or "Ground and Pound" - offense.

WR | Carlton Mitchell | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
Cleveland Browns WR Carlton Mitchell likely needs to step up in training camp if he hopes to be a part of the 53-man roster.

WR | Braylon Edwards | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Cleveland Browns are unlikely to have much of an interest, if any, in veteran free-agent WRs Plaxico Burress, Braylon Edwards or Terrell Owens. If anything, the team might pick up a veteran who is a good role model to mentor the younger receivers.

WR | Mike Wallace | Pittsburgh Steelers | Free Agents, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Steelers CB Ike Taylor said he expects the Steelers and restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace to reach an agreement on a new contract and for Wallace to report to training camp on time.

Tight End

TE | Antonio Gates | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
If San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates can stay healthy, he could be good for roughly 70 receptions and 10 touchdowns in 2012.

TE | Benjamin Watson | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Cleveland Browns TE Benjamin Watson is expected to keep his job as starting tight end this season. He'll be trying to hold off charges from TEs Jordan Cameron, Dan Gronkowski, Brad Smelley and E. Alex Smith, among others.

Offensive Tackle

OT | Mitchell Schwartz | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit
Cleveland Browns OG Shawn Lauvao and OT Mitchell Schwartz are expected to make up the right side of the offensive line, and some believe this could be one of the premier lines in the NFL if they stick together and injuries don't crop up.

OT | Max Starks | Free Agent | Injury, Free Agents
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said the team is monitoring the health of free-agent OT Max Starks (knee) to see if he is able to recover from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last season.

Defensive Line

DL | Kris Jenkins | Retired | Fantasy
Retired DL Kris Jenkins (Jets) might not be that impressed by the exploits of QB Tim Tebow last season in Denver, although evidence refutes his statement. "He won on a lot of late drives where you are dealing with altitude and defenses are tired, and then he's making the magic happen," Jenkins said. "Now he's at sea level. Everyone can keep up with you." The evidence suggests Jenkins is misguided, as three of Tebow's five fourth-quarter comebacks were on the road, and Tebow did play his college ball at pancake-flat Florida.

LB | Jasper Brinkley | Minnesota Vikings | Injury
Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said the team is worried about LB Jasper Brinkley's (groin, hip) durability since he has been dealing with groin and hip injuries.

CB | Terrell Thomas | New York Giants | Injury
New York Giants CB Terrell Thomas (knee) said he plans to be one of the team's starting cornerback this upcoming season. "I've said I'm the starter, and they brought me back to be the starter, and that is the mindset I have," Thomas said. "I'm not going to go in saying, 'Oh, I want to compete for a job.' No, I'm the starter."

CB | Darrelle Revis | New York Jets | Fantasy
The New York Jets braintrust sounds unwilling to re-negotiate the contract of CB Darrelle Revis, and they expect him to report for training camp. General manager Mike Tannenbaum and team owner Woody Johnson has evaded questions about the subject, and Revis sounds like he might be headed for a second holdout in just three years. Revis stated he is "not unhappy" about his current contract, but also said he believed the team promised to re-visit his current deal after two years.

CB | Antonio Cromartie | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets CB Antonio Cromartie is due to make more money over the next two seasons than CB Darrelle Revis. Cromartie is scheduled to make $16.5 million to just $13.5 million for Revis, which is why the star cornerback is unhappy with his contract situation. There are also four other players - OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, LB David Harris, WR Santonio Holmes and QB Mark Sanchez - who are also scheduled to make more.

Strong Safety

SS | Deon Grant | Free Agent | Free Agents
Free-agent SS Deon Grant (Giants) was extremely popular in the locker room, and he brought veteran leadership and a calming presence, as well as versatility on the field. For now, the New York Giants appear to intent on seeing what they have heading into training camp, but the possibility still exists that Grant could return at some point.

SS | Tyler Sash | New York Giants | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit
New York Giants SS Tyler Sash (hamstring) battled a hamstring injury during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. Despite the injury, he is still considered the favorite to replace S Deon Grant. However, he'll have plenty of competition with safeties Stevie Brown, Will Hill, Chris Horton, Janzen Jackson and Jojo Nicolas also in the mix.

SS | Yeremiah Bell | New York Jets | Transaction
New York Jets SS Yeremiah Bell might be on the more underrated additions, not only for the team, but in the entire league. The Jets signed Bell to be a starter, and he is behind in learning the new defensive system. However, he reportedly had a strong minicamp.

SS | Eric Hagg | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit
Cleveland Browns SS Eric Hagg has served as the starting free safety since the start of organized team activities (OTAs). However, he will still need to hold off FS Usama Young in training camp if he wants to win the starting gig going into the regular season.

Free Safety

FS | Stevie Brown | New York Giants | Depth Chart Tidbit
New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said safeties Stevie Brown and Will Hill stood out as backup safeties who impressed in minicamp. "Brown really showed me some things that I did not see in his workout," Fewell said. "Steve did a really good job of covering some ground from the post position, from the half position." Brown might be the biggest competition to SS Tyler Sash (hamstring) for the third safety job.

FS | Usama Young | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit
Cleveland Browns SS Eric Hagg has served as the starting free safety since the start of organized team activities (OTAs). However, he will still need to hold off FS Usama Young in training camp if he wants to win the starting gig going into the regular season.
