Manny Machado, SS, Baltimore Orioles
The O's are in this thing! But they have some clear holes and one of the most talented prospects in baseball sitting at Double-A Bowie. Why not shake things up? Buck Showalter is willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the race!
Jonah Keri's Grantland piece makes a convincing argument that it's not a bad move. (Aside from the snarky comment about Showalter's job as manager.) Machado, 20 (as of a month ago), is supposed to be one of those pretty rare talents, one who holds his own against slightly older comp.
In 109 games for the Bowie Baysox, he's done just that by hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 13 stolen bases. The No. 3 overall pick in 2010 has no Class AAA experience, of course, but he may not need it to stay alive in the majors. In the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder's two years as a pro, he's displayed the ability to adapt to new levels with a little time.
Machado was scorching this month (12-for-26, two home runs, one theft). The Show won't be too big for him, even if he struggles with the stick. The O's are throwing him into the fire at the hot corner and in the No. 9 spot on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals. They didn't bring him up to sit.
