Fantasy NASCAR practice recap: Advocare 500

Practice Recap: Heluva Good

Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth don't exactly have similar driving styles, but they both have had a ton of success at 1.5-mile tracks. That being said, a victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway has eluded both of them. That could change this weekend after Biffle and Kenseth topped the charts in the opening practice session for Sunday's race.

A compelling case can be made for both drivers this weekend, and putting both on your fantasy roster this weekend could be a wise move. Biffle has dominated the 1.5-mile tracks this season, including winning at Texas earlier in the year. Meanwhile, Kenseth leads all drivers with a 6.9 average finish at Texas in the last 10 races at the track. Both should make excellent additions to fantasy rosters this weekend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Martin Truex Jr. and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five, and all three drivers have been mediocre at Atlanta in recent years. In 18 combined starts over the past six races at the track, the trio has combined for just three top-10s and not a single top-five finish. Of the group, Junior has the best career numbers at AMS, while Bowyer has had the most recent success. On the strength of his past success at consistency this season, Junior is probably the driver to target out of the three.

Matt Kenseth

While the back half of the top five didn't contain many reliable options, the rest of the top 10 did. Defending race winner Jeff Gordon ranked sixth, former winner Kyle Busch ranked eighth, and three-time Atlanta winner Jimmie Johnson ranked ninth. With Johnson looking for a win to get a few more bonus points for the Chase and Gordon and Busch looking for wins just to make the playoffs, all three should be solid fantasy options this weekend.

In terms of 10-lap average speeds, Denny Hamlin was the fastest by a wide margin. While he has never won at Atlanta, he has finished eighth or better in three of his last six starts. Coming off a win last weekend and showing the long-run consistency needed to handle the high speeds at AMS, Hamlin could make a serious run at back-to-back wins.

When the cars took the track for Happy Hour, a bunch of familiar faces appeared near the top of the charts. Kenseth, Gordon, Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Biffle posted the top-five times of the session. With all five drivers showing speed in both practices Saturday, fantasy owners should feel confident in all of them, especially considering that most drivers were complaining about being loose throughout both sessions. Having a handle on the track early in the race could be the difference between getting lapped and being in contention for the win when the night is over.

Gordon and Hamlin topped the charts in terms of 10-lap average speeds in Happy Hour, but the other intriguing name near the top was Brad Keselowski. He posted the third-best 10-lap average speed in both the final practice and the first Saturday session. He also posted the 10th and sixth-fastest laps of the two practices. Add up the solid totals and throw in the fact that he finished a career-best sixth at Atlanta last year, and Keselowski has all the makings of a strong fantasy play this weekend.

Fantasy owners wondering where pole-sitter Tony Stewart was at on the charts shouldn't panic. He ranked 14th in the first session and jumped to seventh in Happy Hour. More importantly, he has a history of focusing on long runs in practice after he wins the pole. Stewart is a three-time winner at Atlanta, and his 7.8 average finish in the last 20 races at the track is by far the best in the series. With finishes of first and third in his last two AMS starts, “Smoke” should be just fine this weekend.
