Fantasy Baseball Diamond Market: Carlos Ruiz

by Nicholas Minnix on September 19, 2012 @ 11:15:24 PDT's Fantasy Baseball Diamond Market gives you candid reviews and ratings of fantasy baseball players making MLB news in your rotisserie or head-to-head baseball leagues. Are they trade bait or worth your FAAB dollars in your fantasy baseball games?

Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia Phillies

Understandably, rotisserie players pretty much gave up on Chooch once he developed plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He batted .335 with career highs in jacks (14) and RBIs (58) before the early August injury, but the Phils expected him to miss six weeks, and when he returned, he wasn't likely to play often.

Coincidentally, right after the Phillies lost their All-Star backstop, they marched their way into the heat of the NL wild-card race. They also activated Ruiz from the DL just one week in September, easily a week earlier than observers even thought possible.

Of course, Ruiz has played sparingly since his return. He's pinch hit a few times and started in four contests. He's hit .263 with a couple of RBIs and a stolen base - yep, some spry thievery (which surprised onlookers last week) - in his 23 plate appearances this month.

According to Charlie Manuel, Chooch's PT will increase substantially in the season's final couple of weeks - for at least as long as his club remains within striking distance of the Senior Circuit's final postseason berth. Ruiz will play at minimum every other day - let's call it four days a week - from here on out.

Ruiz has put up fantastic fantasy marks, especially for a catcher, this year. He's close to seven weeks removed from a case of serious inflammation in his plantar fascia. And he looks to be fairly close to 100 percent.
