2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State

by Cory J. Bonini on March 8, 2013 @ 18:18:15 PDT

Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner chose to skip his final year of college eligibility to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

Werner racked up 7.0 sacks and 11 tackles for loss as a first-year starter in 2011. Still developing as a player, the junior notched 42 tackles (18 for loss), 13.0 sacks and eight pass breakups in 2012.

Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
Well-rounded, elite defender

Strengths

  • Never takes a play off - non-stop motor
  • Much more impressive as a football player than an athlete (not a slouch in that department, either)
  • Awareness in clogging passing lanes
  • Quick off the ball and to close on the ball carrier
  • Flexible with natural bend coming around the corner
  • Violent hands
  • Still honing his game - considerable upside
  • Overall strength to bull rush and destroy ball carriers
  • Disciplined in containment
  • Team-first personality
  • Equally as adept versus the pass and run

Weaknesses

  • Fires out too high at times
  • Had conditioning problems before his junior year (lost 10 pounds and it wasn't nearly as evident)
  • Limited pass-rushing arsenal - often relies too much on speed
  • A violent tackler but not always the best at wrapping up

Expected draft placement

Werner is all over a lot of prognosticators' boards, but that is probably because of an uninspiring showing at the NFL Scouting Combine. On tape, he is as beastly as they come in this draft class. Werner reminds of Patrick Kerney and/or Aaron Kampman.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 2), Oakland Raiders (No. 3), Detroit Lions (No. 5) and Cleveland Browns (No. 6) all could be likely landing spots. He probably won't fall past the New Orleans Saints (No. 15).
