First Baseman

1B | Ryan Howard | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) has not yet been cleared to hit. He is working out at the team's spring training facility in Clearwater, Fla. "He's been throwing and doing some other things," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Tuesday, Aug. 6. "Again, we don't have a timeline for him. We hope he gets back in September at some point."

1B | Eric Hosmer | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy
Kansas City Royals 1B Eric Hosmer had three hits and five RBIs Monday, Aug. 5, and is hitting .315 with a .469 slugging percentage, 11 home runs and 42 RBIs in his last 70 games. He's made a big improvement on pitches on the inner half of the plate during this 70-game stretch. Prior to that, he swung and missed on one of every five swings against those pitches, but he's now missing once every seven swings. Hosmer has also dropped his ground-ball percentage from 59 percent to 51 percent. He's 15-for-32 with three home runs against fastballs 93 mph or harder, too.

1B | Adam LaRoche | Washington Nationals | Fantasy
Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche said he's underweight and is drinking protein shakes to try to gain some weight down the stretch. LaRoche has been around 200 pounds, around 10 or 15 pounds under what he would like to play at. He takes Ritalin to combat his ADD, and it causes him to lose weight during the season. "That medicine just makes it hard to eat," LaRoche said. "It hurts your appetite. Nothing tastes real good. Just kind of got to force it down. If you're not careful, you'll look up a month later and be dropping some weight."

Second Baseman

2B | Howie Kendrick | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Howie Kendrick's (knee) MRI exam showed a left knee sprain, and he'll be listed as day-to-day.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said 2B Wilmer Flores could start at second base with 3B David Wright (hamstring) on the disabled list, moving 2B Daniel Murphy to the hot corner. However, the team's bench is at full strength now, so Flores might just be used at third base. Flores played second and third base last year in the minors before playing almost exclusively at second base this year for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Houston Astros SS Jonathan Villar (thumb) left the game Tuesday, Aug. 6, against the Boston Red Sox in the fifth inning due to a sprained left thumb.

C | John Jaso | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics C John Jaso (concussion) is still experiencing concussion symptoms, and there are no plans for Jaso to re-join the team on the road. OF | Jason Heyward | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (neck) left the game after his first at-bat Tuesday, Aug. 6, with a muscle strain in his neck. He's listed as day-to-day.

Atlanta Braves OF Justin Upton is getting his timing back at the plate and has four home runs in the first four games in August. Upton hit 12 homers in April but then had a total of four in May, June and July. Upton is seeing the ball much better, and he and hitting Greg Walker worked in July to get rid of his high leg kick in order to help him get to the ball faster. Upton didn't feel comfortable with the change and re-added the leg kick. "He's doing a better job of getting his foot down and then swinging the bat, instead of all of it happening real late and rushed. When he gets there on time and can stay there, he's everything you want Justin Upton to be," Walker said.

OF | Ryan Ludwick | Cincinnati Reds | Injury, Fantasy,
Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list Wednesday, Aug. 7, and C Ryan Hanigan (wrist) and OF Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) aren't far behind him. Broxton didn't allow a run in two rehab innings with Triple-A Louisville, giving up five hits, no walks and striking out five. Hanigan took batting practice two weeks ago, and his wrist only hurts him when swinging. Hanigan should come off the DL Wednesday or Friday, Aug. 9. SP | Taylor Jordan | Washington Nationals | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy,
The Washington Nationals recalled P Tanner Roark from Triple-A Syracuse Tuesday, Aug. 6, and moved SP Ross Detwiler (back) to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move. Roark was 9-3 with a 3.15 ERA in 105 2/3 innings (11 starts and 22 relief appearances) at Syracuse this year. SP Taylor Jordan has two or three starts left before he's shut down, so Roark could be an option for the rotation.

SP | Matt Moore | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy,
Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) said his elbow was fine while playing catch Tuesday, Aug. 6, and he'll do so again Wednesday, Aug. 7. Moore is hoping to throw a bullpen session this weekend.

"It's something that I just deal with," Lewis said. "I don't try to make it an issue. I just try to mask the pain as much as I can and for as long as I can and it just comes to the point that I feel like it's affecting my mechanics and not allowing me to compete at the big league level." Lewis went 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in his rehab starts, and his fastball command and velocity suffered due to inconsistent mechanics.
