1B | Prince Fielder | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy
Detroit Tigers 1B Prince Fielder filed for divorce May 28. He is having a down season with a .262 average and 17 homers, and OF Torii Hunter recently said Fielder was going through off-the-field issues.
1B | Brett Pill | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 1B Brett Pill will start taking fly balls in left field, and the team is ready to move on from OF Jeff Francoeur against left-handed pitchers.
Fantasy Tip: Pill may maintain some value in NL-only leagues if he starts to play regularly in left field. This remains to be seen, but he should be owned in those arenas just in case.
1B | Justin Morneau | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau has cleared trade waivers, and the club is now free to trade him to any major league team.
Fantasy Tip: Morneau has heated up since the non-waiver trade deadline passed, so perhaps some teams will increase their interest. He seems like an underappreciated commodity at this stage. A move to a better offensive environment could certainly boost his fantasy value down the stretch.
1B | Brandon Belt | San Francisco Giants | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants C/1B Buster Posey will see less time at first base, according to manager Bruce Bochy, at least in part because of 1B Brandon Belt's recent surge at the plate. Posey is 11-for-66 (.167) in his last 20 games. "His swing is fine," Bochy said of Posey.
Fantasy Tip: It sounds like the skipper is conscious of the abuse that Posey endures as a catcher and would like to get him those full days of rest, at least in part for the benefit of his best player's offense. It can't hurt. This could be good news for Belt owners, assuming that the left-handed hitter, and not Brett Pill, will receive more opportunities against southpaws.
1B | Matt Adams | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (ankle) left his team's game on Tuesday, Aug. 13, because of a high ankle sprain. Manager Mike Matheny reported that X-rays came up negative. Holliday is considered day-to-day. He injured the ankle when, during another player's at-bat, he attempted to retreat with a hard cut to first base after he took a few steps toward second. He stayed in the contest and reached second on a throwing error but was then replaced by a pinch runner.
Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Holliday will avoid the DL but will probably need at least a couple of days to recuperate. Matt Adams figures to benefit in terms of playing time in the short term.
2B | Marco Scutaro | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) was back in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Washington Nationals. He had a single in five at-bats as the leadoff hitter for manager Bruce Bochy.
Fantasy Tip: Scutaro might deal with his back issues for the remainder of the season until he has time to rest over the winter. For now, it appears safe to get him back into the active lineup in all leagues which allow daily transactions.
2B | Wilmer Flores | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Mets 3B Wilmer Flores (ankle) is out again Wednesday, Aug. 14.
SS | Derek Jeter | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter (calf) took batting practice on the field and will move to the team's spring training complex in Florida Friday, Aug. 16.
SS | Elvis Andrus | Texas Rangers | Fantasy
Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus has cleared revocable waivers.
SS | Brendan Ryan | Seattle Mariners | Transaction, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners SS Brendan Ryan has cleared waivers and the team can trade him to any team before the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline.
SS | Tyler Pastornicky | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves SS Tyler Pastornicky (knee) left the game Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Philadelphia Phillies due to a sprained left knee. He will be re-evaluated Thursday, Aug. 15. He was injured in a collision with OF Jason Heyward on a play while on defense.
SS | Erick Aybar | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Erick Aybar (calf) is out of the lineup Wednesday, Aug. 14, but is available off the bench. He is improving and is hoping to play Thursday, Aug. 15.
SS | Hanley Ramirez | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) is back in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Get him back in your lineup in daily leagues.
SS | Marwin Gonzalez | Houston Astros | Transaction
The Houston Astros recalled SS Marwin Gonzalez from the minors Wednesday, Aug. 14.
SS | Tyler Greene | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents
The Chicago White Sox released SS Tyler Greene Tuesday, Aug. 13.
SS | Andrew Romine | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Transaction, Fantasy
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recalled SS Andrew Romine from the minors Wednesday, Aug. 14, and optioned P Nick Maronde in a corresponding move. Romine is starting at shortstop Wednesday.
Fantasy Tip: Romine will fill in while Erick Aybar recovers from a calf cramp. Romine should only be owned in AL leagues if Aybar winds up on the DL. Otherwise, he's just a depth piece. Romine is best known for his stellar defense. He makes frequent contact with the stick but doesn't own much power at all.
SS | Munenori Kawasaki | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said SS Munenori Kawasaki will share time at second base with INF Maicer Izturis, who "looks a little worn down, to be honest with you."
Fantasy Tip: Kawasaki and Izturis should only be options for AL-only league managers.
SS | Starlin Castro | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro is 11-for-46 (.239) in 12 games in August with no doubles, no home runs and one RBI. "You've got to be able to hit the fastball, and if you can't hit the fastball, you'll struggle in this league," manager Dale Sveum said. "The bottom line is laying off the breaking ball." Castro has had many moving parts in his swing this year that has caused him to miss the fastball, and hitting coach James Rowson has tried to get Castro to quiet things down and eliminate movement.
SS | Alexei Ramirez | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
Chicago White Sox SS Alexei Ramirez has had a poor 2013 season in the field, but off-the-field issues have likely contributed to that poor performance, according to manager Robin Ventura. Ramirez committed three errors on Tuesday, Aug. 13, giving him 20, which matches a career high for a campaign. In spring training, Ramirez left the team because of the death of his father-in-law. Ventura believes that Ramirez's ability hasn't diminished, because the shortstop has still made some great plays. His Ultimate Zone Rating, a defensive metric, is 5.5, which is eighth among regular shortstops, according to Fangraphs.com. He leads the club with 138 hits and is second on it with 25 stolen bases.
Fantasy Tip: The Cuban Missile has had a solid fantasy season because of the BA and steals, so fantasy owners aren't much concerned about the defensive miscues. Especially if his skipper is willing to defend him. This isn't the first time that Ramirez has been bothered by things away from the clubhouse. It's been tough at times in the States for the Cuban transplant, who's always been reportedly close to his family.
SS | Miguel Tejada | Kansas City Royals | Injury
Kansas City Royals INF Miguel Tejada (calf) has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list. He will miss the rest of the season.
Fantasy Tip: This explains why the Royals went after Emilio Bonifacio. It's a good move for them, if Boni turns things around at the dish and plays D consistently.
3B | Anderson Franco | Washington Nationals | Transaction
The Washington Nationals signed 16-year-old Dominican 3B Anderson Franco to a $900,000 deal.
3B | Pablo Sandoval | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy is sticking with 3B Pablo Sandoval over INF Joaquin Arias, who had four hits Tuesday, Aug. 13. "You know, we've got to get Pablo going," Bochy said of Sandoval, who has one home run since May 22 and a .209 average in 43 games since returning from the DL in late June. Sandoval's last extra-base hit was on July 28.
Fantasy Tip: Sandoval gets himself in trouble when he chases bad pitches, and that's probably partially to blame for his current cold streak. The Giants could choose to rest him some more if he doesn't bounce out of the funk soon. Maybe you should do the same.
3B | Mike Moustakas | Kansas City Royals | Injury, Fantasy
Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (calf) is wearing a walking boot while dealing with tightness in his left calf, but the team said the walking boot is only a precautionary measure to relieve pressure in his calf. He's hitting .293 with four home runs and 13 RBIs since the All-Star break. Manager Ned Yost said it's possible Moustakas will land on the disabled list. SS Elliot Johnson started at third Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson isn't the answer if Moustakas lands on the DL. That's why the Royals traded for infield utility man Emilio Bonifacio Wednesday. Bonifacio's worth will increase in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues if Moose is sidelined longer.
3B | Josh Vitters | Chicago Cubs | Injury
Chicago Cubs 3B Josh Vitters (hamstring) aggravated his hamstring in the minors at Triple-A Iowa and could go back on the disabled list. He has been limited to 28 games this year with various injuries.
C | John Jaso | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics C John Jaso (concussion) will fully recover from his concussion, an expert told the team. However, there is still no timetable for his return.
C | Joe Mauer | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer tied a career high with five hits in an extra-innings loss Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Cleveland Indians. It was the fifth five-hit game of Mauer's career, and first since July 26, 2010.
C | Mike Napoli | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli, dropped to the seventh spot of the order Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Toronto Blue Jays, responded with a two-run home run. It was his only hit in five at-bats.
C | Wilson Ramos | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals C Wilson Ramos (hamstring) said Wednesday, Aug. 14, that he expects to be held out of the lineup "maybe one or two days." He aggravated his hamstring injury Tuesday, Aug. 13, and was out of the starting lineup Wednesday. C Kurt Suzuki filled in and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored while hitting out of the eighth spot.
C | Buster Posey | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey had singles in the eighth and ninth inning of the game Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Washington Nationals, snapping a 3-for-26 slide.
C | Derek Norris | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics C Derek Norris (back) is available off the bench Wednesday, Aug. 14, and is likely to return Thursday, Aug. 15. C John Jaso (concussion) is expected to fully recover from his concussion, but there is no timetable for his return.
C | Ryan Doumit | Minnesota Twins | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Twins C/OF Ryan Doumit (concussion) is expected to be activated from the seven-day disabled list in the next couple of days, according to general manager Terry Ryan.
Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Doumit has passed some initial testing, at least, for his concussion. Ryan's timeline would put Doumit on pace to miss only the minimum amount of time.
C | Wilin Rosario | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario (hamstring) is not in the team's lineup on Wednesday, Aug. 14. His right hamstring is better than it was after his team's game on Tuesday, Aug. 13, and he should be ready to play on Friday, Aug. 16, against the Baltimore Orioles on the road.
Fantasy Tip: Sounds like it's not a big deal. Fantasy owners should keep their eyes on lineups on Friday, though. Yorvit Torrealba will play in Rosario's absence.
C | Yadier Molina | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (knee) and OF Shane Robinson (shoulder) are expected to return from the disabled list on Thursday, Aug. 15, when they are first eligible. Molina has been taking batting practice, catching bullpen sessions, blocking balls and running sprints. He said he doesn't feel any pain following a period of rest and then his baseball activities. Robinson has been making full-effort throws from the outfield and probably could have returned before Thursday.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should be happy to have Yadi back, but they should expect the Cards to rest him a little more frequently than they used to.
OF | Jose Tabata | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Jose Tabata (flu) was scratched from the lineup with flu-like symptoms for the second straight game Wednesday, Aug. 14, but entered the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning.
OF | Alfonso Soriano | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees OF Alfonso Soriano is the third player in Major League Baseball history to post six or more RBI in consecutive games, joining former Texas Rangers OF Rusty Greer and former Milwaukee Brewers OF Geoff Jenkins.
OF | Bryce Harper | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper (illness) was back in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the San Francisco Giants after missing the game Tuesday, Aug. 13, due to flu-like symptoms. He finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
OF | Gregor Blanco | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants OF Gregor Blanco was hitless in three at-bats with a walk and a strikeout Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Washington Nationals. He is now hitting just .113 since the All-Star break.
Fantasy Tip: Blanco is only worth using in the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues right now until he starts to show a little more consistency at the plate.
OF | Shane Victorino | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (leg) is a switch hitter by trade, but he has mainly been hitting right-handed since Aug. 4 due to weakness in his left leg. He would rather bat right on right instead of sitting on the bench and being in a platoon situation. "It's because of how I feel. I don't have that drive and the sit-back on my back leg to be able to turn and twist on it yet," Victorino said. "That's the part that's been frustrating for me is not having that. It's something we're working on every day to try and get back, because trust me, I want to be back on that side."
Fantasy Tip: It's clear Victorino isn't 100 percent, and he hasn't been for some time. He likely isn't going to be back to full health until spring training next season. For fantasy owners, it's nice he is trying to soldier on, but it might be best to find healthier alternatives.
OF | Oscar Taveras | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) will have a season-ending surgical procedure done on his foot next week to address his recent high ankle sprain.
Fantasy Tip: The team's top prospect, and one of the best in baseball, is expected to be ready for spring training. He remains a tremendous long-term keeper fantasy prospect.
OF | Coco Crisp | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (wrist) received an injection in his left wrist Wednesday, Aug. 14, and he won't be ready to play for another day or two.
OF | Reed Johnson | Atlanta Braves | Injury
Atlanta Braves OF Reed Johnson (Achilles') has been taking batting practice and throwing for almost a week, but he hasn't been able to run yet. He is having custom orthotics made that will hopefully help him recover when he can run again. "Obviously I want to get back in there as soon as I can," Johnson said. "But at the same time, I don't want to get to a point where I come back a little too soon and reinjure it and all of a sudden it's the playoffs are gone, the season's gone."
OF | Peter Bourjos | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Peter Bourjos (wrist) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday, Aug. 16.
OF | Matt Holliday | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (ankle) is in the starting lineup and is hitting cleanup Wednesday, Aug. 14.
OF | Delmon Young | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents
The Philadelphia Phillies released OF Delmon Young Wednesday, Aug. 14.
OF | Desmond Jennings | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy
Tampa Bay Rays OF Desmond Jennings (finger) hit off a tee Wednesday, Aug. 14, and he's hoping to return from the disabled list Monday, Aug. 19.
OF | Adam Eaton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks OF Adam Eaton won't be benched because he didn't run hard to first base in his club's extra-innings game on Tuesday, Aug. 13, according to manager Kirk Gibson.
Fantasy Tip: Eaton isn't in there today, even though the team is facing a right-hander, so we'll have to take the manager's word for it. Eaton bounced into a double play last that ended the 10th inning last night and appeared to let up. His explanation was that he had a mental lapse, plenty believable for the noted hustler. Nick Piecoro also tweets that Gibson said he would have removed Eaton from the game at the time if he'd had enough players available from the pine. Still, hopefully Eaton has received the message and this shouldn't affect Eaton's PT in the future, barring something out of character from him occurring again.
OF | Travis Snider | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Travis Snider (toe) took batting practice on Tuesday, Aug. 13, for the first time since landing on the disabled list in late July. He also had a "frisky" workout in the outfield.
Fantasy Tip: What got into that cat? Whatever it is, it may not be enough to play often if Andrew Lambo takes off. Lambo's questionable plate discipline may keep the door open for Snider and Jose Tabata in the long run, but Lambo has the kind of pop that the Bucs really want in there regularly.
OF | Alex Presley | Pittsburgh Pirates | Transaction
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Alex Presley was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. It's the fifth time he's been optioned this season. Pittsburgh made the move to clear room for OF Andrew Lambo.
OF | Kevin Pillar | Toronto Blue Jays | Transaction, Depth Chart Tidbit
Toronto Blue Jays OF Kevin Pillar and INF Munenori Kawasaki have been officially recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
Fantasy Tip: It's official. No Anthony Gose. Pillar has a shot at ABs and may be worth an AL-only play for his speed. Kawasaki really has no fantasy value, but he's a fan fav.
OF | Colby Rasmus | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Transaction, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays OF Colby Rasmus (oblique) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. The move is retroactive to Monday, Aug. 12.
Fantasy Tip: Kevin Pillar has been recalled, although no formal announcement has been made. The Jays also dealt Emilio Bonifacio to the Kansas City Royals today, so Anthony Gose could be on his way as well. Toronto may be tempted to give Pillar a shot since many believe he's earned it. Gose has more upside in the long term, however.
OF | Tony Campana | Arizona Diamondbacks | Transaction, Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Tyler Skaggs has been optioned to the minor leagues. OF Tony Campana has been recalled in a corresponding move.
OF | Manny Ramirez | free agent | Free Agents
Free-agent OF Manny Ramirez told a Spanish-language ESPN radio show that he's not retiring and that he's looking for another opportunity to play, according to ESPN's Hector Cruz.
Fantasy Tip: Some don't when to hang 'em up. It's unlikely that we see Man-Ram in a major league uni again, even if he gets a chance with another organization.
SP | Jarrod Parker | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy,
Oakland Athletics SP Jarrod Parker allowed one earned run while scattering eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts over a career-high 8 1/3 innings Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Houston Astros.
SP | Jordan Zimmermann | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann allowed one earned run, six hits, two walks with two strikeouts over seven innings to notch his National League-leading 14th victory Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the San Francisco Giants. Over his past 42 regular season starts, Zimmermann is 23-8 with a 3.01 ERA, and his team is 31-11 in this outings.
SP | Ivan Nova | New York Yankees | Fantasy,
New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova worked 7 1/3 innings in another win Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He has now last at least seven innings in seven consecutive starts.
Fantasy Tip: Nova has re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option in all AL-only leagues and some mixed formats. He is eating up innings, and he is now 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts in the month of August.
SP | Alexi Ogando | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando (shoulder) had a CT scan Wednesday, Aug. 14, after complaining of soreness in his right shoulder after his last start. The results of the testing will be revealed Thursday, Aug. 15.
Fantasy Tip: Ogando is tentatively scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 19, against the Houston Astros, and he is in line to be a two-start pitcher in the upcoming week. There is no word whether he'll need to skip his next outing, or get pushed back. When we know, we'll pass it along.
SP | John Lannan | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies SP John Lannan (knee) left his start Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Atlanta Braves early due to a left knee injury.
SP | Dan Haren | Washington Nationals | Transaction, Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren has cleared waivers and the team can deal him to any other club before the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline.
SP | Erik Bedard | Houston Astros | Transaction, Fantasy,
Houston Astros SP Erik Bedard has clears waivers and the team can trade him to any other organization before the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline.
SP | Jeremy Hefner | New York Mets | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy,
The New York Mets placed SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow Wednesday, Aug. 14. The team said his injury is chronic, but he won't require surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Hefner's year is over. He was already optioned by the Mets, so he's probably not owned in many leagues anymore.
SP | Wandy Rodriguez | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Aug. 13, and tossed fastballs and changeups. He'll mix in his curveball in a batting practice session Friday, Aug. 16.
SP | Matt Moore | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy,
Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) will not return to start this weekend. Instead, he'll throw again Sunday, Aug. 18, and then be re-evaluated. The team is adamant that he hasn't suffered a setback.
SP | Clay Buchholz | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (shoulder) had his "best day so far" Wednesday, Aug. 14, throwing 50 pitches and three simulated innings in a bullpen session. He threw all of his pitches and is likely to repeat the process this weekend.
SP | Kevin Gausman | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles P Kevin Gausman has been skipped in the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles are monitoring his innings and preparing him for a September call-up.
Fantasy Tip: It's likely that he'll have a relief role, and it's not clear if they plan to recall him in time for him to be eligible for the postseason roster, but they probably will. He's unlikely to have fantasy value for the rest of this year, but he may get a spot start at the end of the regular season.
SP | Tyler Chatwood | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood (elbow) will throw a side session on Saturday, Aug. 17. His elbow continues to improve.
Fantasy Tip: Perhaps he'll return sometime in September, if all goes well.
SP | Ryan Dempster | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox SP Ryan Dempster had struggled for about a month prior to his start on Tuesday, Aug. 13, against the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two. He spent only 88 pitches before he was removed from the game.
Pitching coach Juan Nieves said that the pitcher was taxed physically during the period in which he struggled, but in last night's outing, Dempster admitted that he was mentally worn down. Nieves believes that's a good sign, because Dempster was focused on every pitch instead of letting his emotions affect his future offerings. The hurler has reportedly made adjustments, but not so much mechanically as psychologically. Nieves also noted that Dempster used his dangerous split-fingered fastball more effectively and that he's better when he conserves his slider for certain situations.
Fantasy Tip: This could be good news for Dempster owners. Monitor his peripherals to see if there are incremental improvements. He may salvage some mixed-league value yet.
SP | Brett Anderson | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics P Brett Anderson (foot) will pitch two innings in relief for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Aug. 17, manager Bob Melvin announced. It'll be his first game action since April 29. As previously reported, Anderson may return to the A's as a reliever; Melvin indicated the possibility because it would "get him back quicker."
Fantasy Tip: Anderson probably won't have fantasy value for the rest of this season, but the A's could always stretch him out a bit in September, in time for the postseason. Oakland is gearing up for a playoff run.
SP | Travis Blackley | Texas Rangers | Transaction
The Texas Rangers have acquired P Travis Blackley from the Houston Astros for cash. Texas assigned Blackley to Triple-A Round Rock.
SP | Jake Arrieta | Chicago Cubs | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta will be recalled to start on Friday, Aug. 16. The team has moved P Carlos Villanueva back to the bullpen.
Fantasy Tip: Lefty Chris Rusin's performance reportedly played a role in the decision to move Villanueva, according to Cubs beat writer Mark D. Gonzales. Arrieta will probably get a chance to stick for the rest of the season and could be worth a pickup in NL-only leagues.
SP | Barry Zito | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito has cleared trade waivers and is therefore eligible to be traded to any team, according to sources. CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler suggests that Zito's poor numbers on the road and large contract, which is in its final couple of months, are obstacles to a trade, however.
Fantasy Tip: It's highly unlikely that another club tries to deal for Zito. It would take virtually nothing to get him, even if the Giants picked up most of the left-hander's salary, and his 2012 postseason performance suggests that he can still be effective. Still, most teams probably won't bother exploring the possibility. Zito is in the bullpen and may remain there through the end of the season.
RP | Jim Johnson | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy,
Baltimore Orioles RP Jim Johnson leads the American League with 39 saves this year, but he's also blown nine saves, including two in each of the last two nights. Johnson has five losses stemming from those nine blown saves, and he's lost two others he entered when the score was tied. The Orioles' bullpen is 20-18 overall, with Johnson sitting at 3-7. Johnson blew four saves in six outings in May but then rattled off 12 straight save conversions and gave up just one run over 14 outings. It looks like manager Buck Showalter will continue to stick with Johnson for now.
Fantasy Tip: Perhaps the reason Showalter hasn't demoted Johnson from the closer's role is because of the lack of proven closing options in the bullpen. Tommy Hunter has pitched extremely well in relief this year and is probably the most deserving of the opportunity if Showalter decides to shake things up at this juncture.
RP | Matt Lindstrom | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy,
Chicago White Sox RP Matt Lindstrom has cleared waivers and the team can now deal him to another organization before the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline.
RP | Matt Guerrier | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Transaction,
Chicago Cubs RP Matt Guerrier (forearm) has cleared waivers, but he is sidelined due to a torn flexor in his right forearm, and is shut down for the season. He will not be traded.
RP | Jordan Walden | Atlanta Braves | Injury,
Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (hand) is hoping to return Friday, Aug. 16, after he was hit by a line drive off his pitching hand last weekend. He felt soreness playing catch Tuesday, Aug. 13, but he planned to play catch again Wednesday, Aug. 14, and Thursday, Aug. 15.
RP | Sean Marshall | Cincinnati Reds | Injury,
Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker isn't expecting to have RP Sean Marshall (shoulder) back for the rest of the season.
RP | Rafael Betancourt | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy,
Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is unsure if RP Rafael Betancourt (appendix) will return to the closing duties when he's completely healthy. Weiss could ease him back into the ninth, with RP Rex Brothers holding down the fort. A lot will depend on how Betancourt fares in his rehab game Thursday, Aug. 15, and how he feels. Betancourt is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday, Aug. 17. He's regained some strength after losing eight pounds following his appendectomy.
Fantasy Tip: Brothers is owned in all leagues, and it should stay that way. He's the closer of the future and could continue to be the man in the ninth for the rest of the season. Betancourt owners have to hold him and hope he pitches well enough to at least see a handful of save chances down the stretch.
RP | Jason Grilli | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury
Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli (forearm) played catch on Tuesday, Aug. 13, for the second time since landing on the disabled list. He felt good doing so.
Fantasy Tip: Grilli still has a good chance to return sometime in September as long as he avoids major setbacks. Mark Melancon will continue to close until then.
