by KFFL Staff on August 23, 2013 @ 08:15:07 PDT

First Baseman

1B | Ryan Howard | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg indicated 1B Ryan Howard (knee) likely will not play again this season because the team wants him to take his time to get back to 100 percent.

1B | Paul Konerko | Chicago White Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago White Sox 1B Paul Konerko (head) was scratched from the starting lineup Thursday, Aug. 22, because he was feeling light headed.

1B | Sean Halton | Milwaukee Brewers | Transaction
The Milwaukee Brewers optioned 1B Sean Halton to the minors Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Second Baseman

2B | Dan Uggla | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves 2B Dan Uggla (eyes) took batting practice before the team's game Thursday, Aug. 22.

2B | Phil Gosselin | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy,
The Atlanta Braves placed OF Jason Heyward (jaw) on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured jaw Thursday, Aug. 22, and activated SP Paul Maholm (wrist) from the 15-day DL in a corresponding move. Also, INF Phil Gosselin was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett to make room on the roster for 2B Elliot Johnson.

2B | Jayson Nix | New York Yankees | Injury, Transaction
The New York Yankees placed INF Jayson Nix (hand) on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand Thursday, Aug. 22.

2B | Maicer Izturis | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy
The Toronto Blue Jays placed 2B Maicer Izturis (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle Thursday, Aug. 22, and recalled INF Ryan Goins from the minors in a corresponding move.

Munenori Kawasaki will likely take over the main duties at the keystone with Izturis on the infirmary. Acquire Kawasaki only if you're extremely desperate for a middle infielder in an AL-only setup.

SS | Leury Garcia | Chicago White Sox | Transaction
The Chicago White Sox called up SS Leury Garcia from Triple-A Charlotte. Manager Robin Ventura said Garcia will initially be used off the bench in a variety of ways.

Third Baseman

3B | Luis Valbuena | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (oblique) and OF Ryan Sweeney (rib) will move to Arizona for their rehab this weekend. Sweeney and Valbuena will start playing in the Rookie League Saturday, Aug. 24. SP Scott Baker (elbow) has made two starts for Single-A Daytona and three for Single-A Kane County.

3B | Mike Olt | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez and OF Albert Almora are unlikely to come up when rosters expand in September. Manager Dale Sveum doesn't see anyone being called up that isn't already on the 40-man roster. "The (Brian) Bogusevics and Sweeneys, and obviously (Donnie Murphy's) doing a heck of a job," Sveum said of the outlook for current roster players. "And yesterday's topic was getting (Anthony) Rizzo and (Starlin) Castro to where they go into the winter feeling a heck of a lot better than they did two days ago." OF Jorge Soler and 3B Mike Olt are both on the 40-man roster.

Soler and Olt are your best options if you're speculating in NL-only leagues for the final month. They could contribute in deep mixed leagues, too, if they're given everyday playing time in the final month, but that's unlikely.

C | Kurt Suzuki | Oakland Athletics | Transaction
The Oakland Athletics acquired C Kurt Suzuki and cash from the Washington Nationals in exchange for P Dakota Bacus. The Nationals will pick up nearly half of Suzuki's remaining salary this year, or around $675,000.

C | Miguel Montero | Arizona Diamondbacks | Injury, Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks C Miguel Montero (back) went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk and SS Willie Bloomquist (hand) went 2-for-3 with a run scored during their rehab assignments with the team's Rookie League affiliate Wednesday, Aug. 21.

C | Alex Avila | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (concussion) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo Thursday, Aug. 22.

OF | David DeJesus | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Rays are expected to acquire Washington Nationals OF David DeJesus either through waivers or a trade. The Rays did claim DeJesus off waivers.

OF | Shin-Soo Choo | Cincinnati Reds | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Chicago Cubs are expected to pursue Cincinnati Reds impending free-agent OF Shin-Soo Choo this offseason because they are looking to add left-handed hitters and improve their on-base percentage.

OF | Ryan Braun | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun issued a statement Thursday, Aug. 22, apologizing for his actions leading to his suspension for the rest of the season. "During the latter part of the 2011 season, I was dealing with a nagging injury and I turned to products for a short period of time that I shouldn't have used. The products were a cream and a lozenge which I was told could help expedite my rehabilitation. It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately," Braun said.

OF | Jason Heyward | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (jaw) will not play again in the regular season, and his availability for the postseason is to be determined.

OF | Andres Torres | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy,
The San Francisco Giants placed OF Andres Torres (Achilles') on the 15-day disabled list with a left Achilles' strain Thursday, Aug. 22, and recalled INF Nick Noonan and OF Francisco Peguero from Triple-A Fresno in corresponding moves. Also, RP Mike Kickham was optioned to Fresno.

Gregor Blanco should now move into an everyday role in center field with Torres sidelined. However, with Angel Pagan (hamstring) nearing a return, that'll probably be short-lived.

OF | Oscar Taveras | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) underwent ankle surgery Wednesday, Aug. 21, to fix a ligament and remove cartilage in his ankle. He's expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Taveras will likely enter the 2014 season as MLB's top prospect, assuming he's fully recovered from the ankle surgery. He'll be called at some point and has the talent to contribute elite outfield numbers.

OF | Yasiel Puig | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig (calf) was back in the lineup Thursday, Aug. 22, after experiencing dehydration and cramping in his legs Wednesday, Aug. 21.

OF | Delmon Young | Tampa Bay Rays | Transaction
The Tampa Bay Rays signed free-agent OF Delmon Young (Phillies) to a minor league deal Thursday, Aug. 22, and he'll report to Double-A Montgomery. Young had a slash line of .261/.302/.397 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 80 games for the Philadelphia Phillies this year.

OF | Jordan Schafer | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (jaw) will have surgery Thursday, Aug. 22, to fix two fractures in his jaw. He's expected to miss four to six weeks. Since June 9, he was hitting .291/.373/.495 and was .357/.426/.607 in his last 22 games. OFs B.J. Upton and Jordan Schafer or SS Andrelton Simmons are the candidates to move into the leadoff spot with Heyward out.

As David Schoenfield notes, Schafer is probably the biggest beneficiary of PT with Heyward out. The Bravos could also mix in Evan Gattis in the outfield, too.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Matt Cain | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (arm) left his start Thursday, Aug. 22, after getting hit in the right arm by a line drive.

Owners should monitor the situation over the next day to find out the severity of the injury.

SP | Jaime Garcia | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury,
St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) said he expects to begin a throwing program in the next few days. He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery around three months ago.

SP | Wandy Rodriguez | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) felt pain in his forearm during a simulated game Thursday, Aug. 22. He is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews early next week.

SP | Brandon Beachy | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) underwent an MRI exam Wednesday, Aug. 21, after his elbow didn't feel right in his last start. He'll visit with Dr. James Andrews Monday, Aug. 26.

SP | Jake Westbrook | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy,
St. Louis Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook (back) is dealing with back stiffness and is unsure if he'll make his next start Monday, Aug. 26.

SP | Daisuke Matsuzaka | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets SP Daisuke Matsuzaka will make the start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 23.

Dice-K is only an option in the deepest of NL-only leagues, and the matchup against the Tigers is a rough one. There are probably better options out there.

SP | Liam Hendriks | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy,
Minnesota Twins SP Liam Hendriks will be called up to make the start against the Cleveland Indians Saturday, Aug. 24. Hendriks is 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts this year.

SP | Mike Minor | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (undisclosed) will not make his start Sunday, Aug. 25, and instead that game will be started by SP Mike Minor. Beachy will visit with Dr. James Andrews Monday, Aug. 26.

This looks like it's a setback in Beachy's recovery from Tommy John surgery, although the Braves have yet to say what Beachy's specific injury is. Anytime you go to see Andrews, though, it's not good news. Check back to find out more on Beachy's ailment.

SP | Tyler Chatwood | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy,
Colorado Rockies SPs Tyler Chatwood (elbow) and Roy Oswalt (hamstring) both threw three innings Thursday, Aug. 22, and they'll start rehab assignments this weekend. Chatwood hopes to pitch for the Rockies next weekend.

SP | Carlos Torres | New York Mets | Transaction, Fantasy,
The New York Mets signed free-agent SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Indians) to an undisclosed deal Thursday, Aug. 22. Matsuzaka could enter the rotation and take the spot of SP Carlos Torres. The team is trying to limit the innings of SPs Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler down the stretch.

Matsuzaka might need a few minor league tune-ups before jumping into the Mets' rotation. Consider him only if you're desperate in NL-only universes. That's if he even gets called up.

SP | Jacob deGrom | New York Mets | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The New York Mets are close to signing free-agent SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Indians) to an undisclosed deal. Matsuzaka could be a candidate to join the rotation down the stretch with SPs Jeremy Hefner (elbow) and Jenrry Mejia (elbow) done for the year. The team doesn't want to promote SPs Rafael Montero or Jacob deGrom because they are facing innings limits. Matsuzaka was 5-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts with Triple-A Columbus.

Dice-K would become an NL-only option for owners looking for pitching help, but that's about it. He didn't look very sharp in the minors with Cleveland this season.

SP | Billy Buckner | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Transaction,
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recalled RP Billy Buckner from the minors Wednesday, Aug. 21, and optioned OF Collin Cowgill in a corresponding move. Also, P Robert Coello (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

SP | Matt Moore | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy,
Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) threw a 59-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Aug. 21, and he'll next throw a simulated game Saturday, Aug. 24.

SP | Travis Blackley | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Travis Blackley will stay in the starting rotation after tossing 66 pitches in his start Tuesday, Aug. 20. His next turn in the rotation will come against the Seattle Mariners Monday, Aug. 26.

Blackley still remains an option only for AL-only owners.

SP | Johnny Cueto | Cincinnati Reds | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will need surgery. His season could be over. SP Johnny Cueto (lat) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. P Nick Christiani was recalled from the minors.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Rafael Betancourt | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy,
Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) left the team's game early Thursday, Aug. 22, because of an elbow injury. He likely will have to go on the disabled list.

If Betancourt has to go on the disabled list, there is a chance he may not come back this season. Owners should hang onto him until they get a clear timetable. Rex Brothers likely will regain the closer role and should be picked up in leagues if he is available.

RP | Greg Burke | New York Mets | Transaction,
The New York Mets optioned RP Greg Burke to Triple-A Las Vegas Thursday, Aug. 22.

RP | Jonathan Broxton | Cincinnati Reds | Injury,
Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (forearm) is expected to undergo surgery on his strained right forearm.

This will likely end Broxton's season and make him unavailable if the Reds were to make the postseason.

RP | Jim Johnson | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy,
Baltimore Orioles RP Tommy Hunter, not RP Jim Johnson, recorded the save over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, Aug. 21, recording the final out of the inning after following RPs Darren O'Day and Brian Matusz. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that he was trying to stay away from Johnson, who had warmed up two or three days in a row and pitched Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Oh, sure, you can read it," Showalter said. "We've got 30-something games. We're going to put our best foot forward every night. Jimmy's our best option, one of them. I'm glad we've got more than one good option. We've got a lot of good options and we'll continue to make use of them."

Hunter deserves to be added if you're looking for saves. Johnson is probably still Showalter's preference in the ninth for the long term, though. Francisco Rodriguez (groin) is battling a nagging injury and could also vulture a few saves while Johnson is vulnerable right now.
