3B Chase Headley, San Diego Padres
Asche settling in at hot corner
The 2012 NL RBI champ finally has a pulse. Headley has gone 12-for-39 (.308) with five home runs, nine RBIs and two stolen bases this month. The switch-hitter missed about a week to close August and open September because of a sore back, and ever since, he's been en fuego. This is something to keep in mind next spring, when he may enter his final season before free agency.
SP Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians
Fantasy owners have understandably been wary of this seemingly withered right-hander. There have been some very encouraging signs, but occasional clunkers and high WHIPs scare folks off. But Jimenez has been incredible since the All-Star break: a 1.83 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 71 K's in 10 starts (64 innings). He has most often cited the improved consistency of his mechanics.
C Wilson Ramos, Washington Nationals
Washington's No. 1 backstop has gone 18-for-55 (.327) with six home runs and a whopping 22 RBIs this month. The Nats dealt Kurt Suzuki to the Oakland Athletics in late August, and Ramos has been playing nearly every day since. At a time when many catchers are receiving extra days off, Washington's isn't sitting. He and his club are scorching hot, too.
RP Joshua Fields, Houston Astros
The Astros may finally have a clear idea of who their closer will be entering 2014. Fields, 28, finally seems to have tamed his largely fastball-curveball combo and learned how to put it to use versus major leaguers. He's inducing lazy flies and infield pop-ups much more frequently. Fields has allowed only three runs, with two walks, 11 K's and four saves, in his last 11 2/3 frames.
