Costly turnovers have Matt Schaub on shaky ground

Quarterback

QB | Matt Schaub | Houston Texans | Fantasy
After stating that Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub would remain as the team's starting quarterback after another shaky performance in the Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Oct. 6, head coach Gary Kubiak didn't seem as sure Monday, Oct. 7, during his press conference. "He is," Kubiak said, "but I'm in the evaluation process." Kubiak declined to say that Schaub would start in Week 6 against the St. Louis Rams. Schaub was benched in Week 5 and has now thrown an interception returned for a touchdown in four straight weeks.

The door is open for T.J. Yates to take over the starting QB role, but it still seems as though Houston isn't ready to jump ship just yet. Yates has almost no upside. In the meantime, Schaub shouldn't be trusted in any fantasy lineup.

QB | Christian Ponder | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (rib) participated in practice Monday, Oct. 7. Ponder said he felt fine while throwing during practice.

QB | Blaine Gabbert | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (hamstring) is dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and will at least miss the team's Week 6 game against the Denver Broncos. QB Chad Henne will make his third start of the year against the Broncos. Head coach Gus Bradley continues to say that Gabbert is still the team's starter, however.

QB | Josh Freeman | Minnesota Vikings | Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Josh Freeman will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job, but QB Christian Ponder (rib) remains the starting quarterback for the time being if he's healthy.

Ponder is still banged up and probably won't hold off Freeman for long. Freeman has the most upside of Ponder and Matt Cassel, too, so expect to see him under center at some point this season once he learns the offense.

QB | Nick Foles | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Eagles QB Chip Kelly didn't rule out the possibility of QB Nick Foles winning the starting job from QB Michael Vick (hamstring) if he has an outstanding game in Week 6 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It's highly unlikely that Foles will steal the job away from Vick after just one week, especially against a very stingy Bucs defense. Foles does, however, make a decent bye week filler if you're desperate.

QB | Tony Romo | Dallas Cowboys | Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has thrown for at least 400 yards five times in his career and has lost all five games.

QB | EJ Manuel | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the team does not have an exact timetable for QB EJ Manuel's (knee) return from his knee injury. "We're waiting for everything to calm down. I talked to EJ he's excited. He doesn't want to be injured. He's excited to get back. As soon as everything calms down he starts with the rehab and he'll go 100 miles per hour because the last one he came back a lot faster than people thought," Marrone said.

QB | Eli Manning | New York Giants | Fantasy
New York Giants QB Eli Manning threw three more interceptions in the team's Week 5 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and he now leads the league with 12 picks this season. "I honestly believe that he's trying so hard to get us a win, he's almost put too much on himself," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "And I'm not making excuses. There were a couple of those plays that were terrible. The intentional grounding penalties hurt so badly, because not only distance but to lose the down. I think we can make some progress with regard to preventing that. I think we do have to sometimes just cover the ball and go down."

It's been a tough year for the younger Manning brother. Key injuries to the Giants' offensive line hasn't helped at all, and it doesn't look to get better any time soon. Consider dropping Manning for other QB2 options on the waiver wire.

QB | Ryan Fitzpatrick | Tennessee Titans | Fantasy
Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is 0-for-8 with an interception on passes of 15 yards or more. That is the most attempts of such without a completion in the league.

QB | Thaddeus Lewis | Buffalo Bills | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis will start for the team in Week 6.

They're playing the Cincinnati Bengals, and he doesn't deserve much fantasy consideration outside of two-QB leagues.

QB | Peyton Manning | Denver Broncos | Fantasy
With his performance on Sunday, Oct. 6, Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning now has 61,371 passing yards, which elevated him into second all-time ahead of Dan Marino (61,361). Manning is behind Brett Favre, who threw for 71,838 yards with the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

QB | Tom Brady | New England Patriots | Fantasy
Even as QB Tom Brady's streak of 52 games with a touchdown pass came to an end, the New England Patriots kept alive a streak of 32 games in a row with at least one takeaway on defense.

Running Back

RB | Da'Rel Scott | New York Giants | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Giants will re-sign free-agent RB Da'Rel Scott.

Scott likely would share carries with Brandon Jacobs in Week 6 if David Wilson (neck) is not able to play. Scott could be a flex option for desperate owners in deeper leagues if Wilson sits out the game.

RB | David Wilson | New York Giants | Injury, Fantasy
New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) did not participate in practice Monday, Oct. 7.

RB | Zac Stacy | St. Louis Rams | Fantasy
St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said RB Zac Stacy will start at running back Week 6. Fisher said Stacy earned another start with his play Week 5.

Owners should look to acquire Stacy if he is available in their leagues because he will get at least one more start. He should be considered a No. 3 running back or a flex option for Week 6.

RB | Jackie Battle | Tennessee Titans | Injury, Fantasy
Tennessee Titans RB Jackie Battle could see his snaps decrease once RB Shonn Greene (knee) returns from his knee surgery.

RB | Andre Ellington | Arizona Cardinals | Fantasy
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he sees RB Andre Ellington playing 30 to 35 snaps per game and does not think his body could handle a heavier workload. Ellington will continue seeing time at running back and wide receiver.

RB | Alfred Morris | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (ribs) was participating in practice Monday, Oct. 7.

It is a good sign for Morris owners that he is back on the practice field. At this point, short of a setback, plan on using him as you normally would in Week 6.

RB | Rashad Jennings | Oakland Raiders | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Raiders RB Rashad Jennings (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of Week 5 and didn't return. The severity is unknown.

If he and Darren McFadden (hamstring) are both out for Week 6, Marcel Reece will likely see the bulk of the action.

RB | Johnathan Franklin | Green Bay Packers | Fantasy
Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin didn't receive another carry in Week 5 after he fumbled in the second quarter Sunday, Oct. 6. He has fumbled twice in his last four carries.

The team plans to ride Eddie Lacy, which makes Franklin basically a handcuff. It's unknown how long James Starks (knee) will miss, but Franklin is in danger of falling back even further on the depth chart.

Wide Receiver

WR | Alshon Jeffery | Chicago Bears | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (ankle) was limited in practice Monday, Oct. 7.

Jeffery's injury probably isn't very serious, but keep tabs on his practice status during the short week. By now you know that he's a must-start in the Bears' offense.

WR | Percy Harvin | Seattle Seahawks | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Seahawks WR Percy Harvin (hip) is "getting closer" to returning after having surgery two months ago to repair a torn labrum in his hip, according to head coach Pete Carroll. "I know he started running last week. I don't know any more than that until we get him out here, but it's encouraging. We're getting closer. It's going to happen as soon as possible," Carroll said. Harvin can return as early as Week 7 after being on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but that's unlikely.

Check to see if Harvin is on the waiver wire in your league; he's owned in only 32 percent of Yahoo! leagues. It's not imperative to stash him just yet, but he should be on your radar if you need help at wideout.

WR | Josh Gordon | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
The San Francisco 49ers have talked with the Cleveland Browns about the possibility of acquiring WR Josh Gordon, but a trade is unlikely because 49ers are expected to get WRs Mario Manningham (knee) and Michael Crabtree (Achilles') back at some point this season.

WR | Michael Crabtree | San Francisco 49ers | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') is on schedule to be game ready by mid to late November.

Even if Crabtree does return this season, he likely will not have any fantasy value because he probably will not be 100 percent until next season. Owners would be taking a big gamble if they relied on him late in the season.

WR | Calvin Johnson | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team won't use WR Calvin Johnson (knee) as a decoy if he plays in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns. "If he's not healthy enough to play, we're certainly not going to put a player out there to decoy because he's still got to run routes," Schwartz said. "What he's going to do, line up and just put his hand up in the air?" Johnson was very close to suiting up in Week 5, but Schwartz was non-committal as to whether he'll play this weekend.

It's obvious that Megatron should be back in your lineup when he returns to the field.

WR | Ryan Broyles | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles had just two catches for 27 yards on two targets in the team's Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Broyles ran only 15 routes compared to 46 for WR Kris Durham and 41 for WR Patrick Edwards.

Many believed Broyles' production would soar with Calvin Johnson (knee) sitting out, but that wasn't the case at all. Durham, Edwards and even Kevin Ogletree were looked to more often than Broyles. This suggests they are still easing Broyles into his role. Until we see more from him, he's better off riding pine on your bench.

WR | Brandon Marshall | Chicago Bears | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall caught just four passes for 30 yards in the team's Week 5 loss to the New Orleans Saints, and QB Jay Cutler targeted him only five times. The Saints double covered Marshall for the majority of the game. "They weren't going to let him have a good day," Cutler said of New Orleans' defense. "They decided, 'Hey, it's not going to happen.' They were going to take him out of the ball game. He still made some plays for us. He might be frustrated, but we just have to keep getting better and better, and he understands that."

Marshall voiced some frustration over his role as a decoy, but head coach Marc Trestman said: "I want to get Brandon the ball. We want to get Brandon the ball. There were a couple of shots early. Jay looked back and he was open a couple of times, then protection got in his face and he was forced to move, which was disappointing. That starts with me. I've got to do a better job of getting him involved."

Opposing defenses are starting to take Marshall out of the game with double teams, freeing up more looks for Alshon Jeffery and Matt Forte. Marshall won't be held down forever, but there will be more frustrating games like this in the future.

WR | Kenny Britt | Tennessee Titans | Fantasy
Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said the team will reassess WR Kenny Britt's role after he had just one catch in Week 5. They threw two him six times on the day.

The quotes sounded like frustrated fantasy owner ready to cut bait. That could be a good thing for Britt.

WR | Donnie Avery | Kansas City Chiefs | Injury, Fantasy
Kansas City Chiefs WR Donnie Avery (shoulder) hurt his shoulder in the first half Sunday, Oct. 6, against the Tennessee Titans. He returned to the game.

Tight End

TE | Owen Daniels | Houston Texans | Injury, Fantasy
The Houston Texans are worried the fibula injury to TE Owen Daniels (fibula) might be serious enough to sideline him for a few weeks.

TE | Martellus Bennett | Chicago Bears | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett (knee) did not practice Monday, Oct. 7.

Bennett returned to the game in Week 5 after sustaining a knee injury, so this probably isn't a serious ailment. He should play, and against the New York Giants, he's a candidate to have a nice game.

TE | Brandon Myers | New York Giants | Injury, Fantasy
New York Giants TE Brandon Myers (ankle) did not participate in practice Monday, Oct. 7.

TE | Jordan Reed | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins TE Logan Paulsen (knee) and TE Jordan Reed (thigh) both were participating in practice Monday, Oct. 7.

TE | Ed Dickson | Baltimore Ravens | Fantasy
Baltimore Ravens TE Ed Dickson had a productive outing Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins, including a 43-yard reception. He entered the game with six dropped passes and only three receptions. "(Ed) played very well," head coach John Harbaugh said Sunday, Oct. 6. "He made a huge play in the crossing route. I'm proud of (Ed)."

Place Kicker

PK | Kai Forbath | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins PK Kai Forbath (groin) said he feels good after kicking twice last week and again Monday, Oct. 7.

PK | Caleb Sturgis | Miami Dolphins | Fantasy
Miami Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis picked up his first career field goal miss Sunday, Oct. 6, in a 26-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. His 57-yard try that would have tied the game missed with 33 seconds to go. He had been 10 for 10 prior to the miss.
