by KFFL Staff on December 18, 2013 @ 08:56:51 PDT

First Baseman

1B | Travis Ishikawa | Pittsburgh Pirates | Transaction,
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent RP Daniel Schlereth (Orioles), SP Adam Wilk (Korean League), SP Kyle McPherson (Pirates), P Brandon Mann (Nationals), P Elvin Ramirez (Angels) and 1B Travis Ishikawa (White Sox) to minor league deals Wednesday, Dec. 18.

1B | Ike Davis | New York Mets | Fantasy
The Pittsburgh Pirates are interested in trading for New York Mets 1B Ike Davis and Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland.

Second Baseman

2B | Omar Infante | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy
Updating previous items, Kansas City Royals 2B Omar Infante will get $5 million in 2014, $7.5 million in 2015, $7.75 million in 2016, and $8 million in 2017. Infante has a $10 million option for 2018 that can be bought out for $2 million.

2B | Jamey Carroll | free agent | Free Agents
The Tampa Bay Rays are interested in free-agent 2B Jamey Carroll (Royals) and 1B Mark Reynolds (Yankees), among others.

2B | Brian Roberts | New York Yankees | Fantasy
The New York Yankees may decide to go with a platoon arrangement at second base this year between 2Bs Brian Roberts and Dean Anna. Anna is a career minor leaguer and hits from the left side. He had an .892 OPS in the Pacific Coast League last season. Roberts is a switch hitter and owns a .716 OPS against lefties and .782 against righties. 2B Kelly Johnson may not be defensively sound enough to play the position. The Yankees know that they need to protect Roberts, though, to keep him healthy over the course of the season.

SS | Jimmy Rollins | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins is unlikely to be traded this winter because he possesses a no-trade clause. "There are still a couple of things I'd like to be No. 1 in for this organization, so until those things are done, I'm not going anywhere," Rollins said in July. He holds the team record in doubles and is 59 hits away from the team record there.

SS | Danny Worth | Detroit Tigers | Transaction,
Detroit Tigers SS Danny Worth and P Luis Marte cleared waivers and were outrighted to the minors Monday, Dec. 16.

Third Baseman

3B | Jeff Baker | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees are thought to have interest in IF Jeff Baker for at-bats and appearances at both second base and third base.

C | Sebastian Valle | Philadelphia Phillies | Transaction
The Philadelphia Phillies designated C Sebastian Valle for assignment Wednesday, Dec. 18.

C | Carlos Santana | Cleveland Indians | Transaction, Fantasy,
A report surfaced that the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians were discussing a trade which would send SP David Price to the Indians for C Carlos Santana, SP Danny Salazar and more. However, a team source from the Rays called the rumor "completely off base."

C | Matt Treanor | Cleveland Indians | Transaction
The Cleveland Indians signed free-agent C Matt Treanor (Dodgers) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Tuesday, Dec. 17.

OF | Franklin Gutierrez | Seattle Mariners | Transaction, Fantasy
The Seattle Mariners re-signed OF Franklin Gutierrez to an undisclosed one-year deal Wednesday, Dec. 17.

OF | Jason Kubel | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Minnesota Twins OF Jason Kubel will earn $2 million if he makes the Opening Day roster and can earn another $1 million via incentives. Kubel will earn $150,000 for reaching 300 and 350 plate appearances, plus $200,000 for reaching 400 PAs. He also will receive $150,000 for spending 30 and 60 days on the parent club's active roster and another $200,000 if he reaches 90 days.

OF | Cole Gillespie | Seattle Mariners | Transaction, Free Agents
Free-agent OF Cole Gillespie (Cubs) posted to his official Twitter account that he will join the Seattle Mariners in 2014.

OF | Mike Morse | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean said OF Mike Morse could play some first base next year, but he'll be the team's primary left fielder.

Starting Pitcher

SP | David Price | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers, at the moment, do not appear seriously involved in trade discussions for Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price.

SP | Jenrry Mejia | New York Mets | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
The New York Mets hinted a fifth starter could be signed by way of a minor league contract, which would allow P Jenrry Mejia, P Jacob deGrom, and P Rafael Montero to compete for a spot out of spring training and help ensure that top P prospect Noah Syndergaard would not be blocked from a summer promotion.

SP | Jason Knapp | free agent | Free Agents,
Free-agent SP Jason Knapp (Indians) will attempt a comeback next year after multiple shoulder surgeries.

SP | Brandon Beachy | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) has been given a clean bill of health and will have no limitations heading into spring training.

SP | Mark Mulder | free agent | Free Agents,
The San Francisco Giants are keeping tabs on free-agent SP Mark Mulder (Cardinals), but he's looking for a major league contract.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Duane Below | Detroit Tigers | Transaction,
The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent RP Duane Below (Korean League) to a minor league deal Tuesday, Dec. 17.

RP | Joaquin Benoit | San Diego Padres | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The San Diego Padres agreed with free-agent RP Joaquin Benoit (Tigers) on a two-year deal worth around $15 million.

Benoit will presumably battle Huston Street for the closer gig in 2014. We think Benoit has a good chance to win the job. Street, 30, has had numerous DL stints over the past few years, and his K/9 took a sharp decline in 2013. Benoit could be an upper-tier closer in PETCO Park. He has power stuff and thrived in his first real shot at closing last year. Monitor this situation in camp, but pounce on Benoit in the late-middle rounds of drafts.

RP | Ryan Madson | free agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent RP Ryan Madson (Angels) is hosting one-on-one private workouts to demonstrate his progress from Tommy John surgery.

RP | Yohan Pino | Minnesota Twins | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Minnesota Twins signed free-agent P Yohan Pino (Reds) to a minor league contract, of which financial terms were not disclosed. Pino, who turns 30 on Dec. 26, spent the bulk of last season with the Cincinnati Reds' Triple-A affiliate.

RP | Jose Veras | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
Clarifying a previous item, Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras will earn a $3.85 million base salary for 2014 and either $5.5 million in 2015 or a $150,000 buyout. Veras can earn an additional $750,000 based on games finished.

RP | Pedro Strop | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman is suggesting that RP Jose Veras will close for the team next season. He agreed on a one-year, $4 million deal Tuesday, Dec. 17, with $3.85 million base salary plus a $150,000 buyout on his $5.5 million option for the 2015 season.

A lot can change between now and opening day. But for now, put Veras higher in your closer rankings than Pedro Strop. Veras sacrificed some dominance for control as the closer for the Houston Astros last year. The move to the National League should be nice, but he won't have as long a leash as he did in Houston if his control problems resurface.

RP | Charlie Furbush | Seattle Mariners | Transaction,
The Seattle Mariners re-signed RP Charlie Furbush to a one-year deal Tuesday, Dec. 17, to avoid service-time issues. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

RP | Grant Balfour | Baltimore Orioles | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with free-agent RP Grant Balfour (Athletics) Tuesday, Dec. 17, according to a team source. He will take over as the team's new closer.

Moving from one of the most friendly pitcher parks in the American League in O.co Coliseum to the hitter-friendly environs of Camden Yards and the AL East will surely be felt in Balfour's numbers. His ability to rack up strikeouts has kept him afloat in recent seasons, but entering his age-36 season, his fly-ball allowance and spotty command could make for some rough stretches.

RP | Matt Thornton | New York Yankees | Transaction,
The New York Yankees signed free-agent RP Matt Thornton (Red Sox) to a two-year, $7 million deal Tuesday, Dec. 17. Thornton is expected to be the team's main left-handed arm in the bullpen.

RP | Jose Valverde | free agent | Free Agents
Updating an earlier report, free-agent RP Jose Valverde (Tigers) did not sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has been in contact with them, though.
