Fantasy Baseball Notes: Ike Davis traded to Pirates

The first significant trade of the MLB season came down late Friday. The New York Mets finally found a taker for Ike Davis in the Pittsburgh Pirates, in exchange for minor league right-hander Zack Thornton and a player to be named.

Davis gone; the Duda abides

Davis exploded in 2012 for 32 home runs and 90 RBI after a slow start. Last season, he got off to another slow start, was demoted and never recovered. An injury and Valley Fever didn't help his cause.

So what now? After beginning the season in a timeshare at first base with Lucas Duda and Josh Satin in the Big Apple, Davis had only 30 plate appearances, one dinger, five RBI and a .208 batting average in five starts.

On the surface, this won't make Davis suddenly a hot commodity on the fantasy baseball waiver wire. Side note: He's owned in just 0.5 percent of ESPN leagues and 6 percent in Yahoo! leagues. The Pirates have been going with a platoon of Gaby Sanchez and Travis Ishikawa at first.

Davis' plate skills deteriorated in 2013, but his second half showed that there might be something left. He'd worn out his welcome with the Metropolitans, clearly, and a change of scenery might be just what the doctor ordered.

The writing is on the wall for Ishikawa. Do the Buccos envision Davis becoming the everyday first baseman? It's possible, because there is still 20-homer power in that lumber somewhere, but he'll have to earn it over Sanchez. In any event, Davis' ownership should see a big boost in all formats, even if he's in a platoon with Sanchez initially.

Back in New York, this trade is a ringing endorsement and a vote of confidence for Lucas Duda. He's responded with a .275/.341/.500 slash line and three homers for Terry Collins. Have confidence to add him in mixed leagues now if you're in need of some pop. Duda will abide.
