John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees will likely hit the free-agent market with the Miami Dolphins as the No. 1 suitor.

QB | Daunte Culpepper | Minnesota Vikings | Injury News, Fantasy
ESPNews reports Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) has been told by the team that he will not be shopped around in a trade. Culpepper said that he could be ready to play in 2006 and added that he would be willing to give back some money to help the team.

QB | J.P. Losman | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
During the NFL Combine, Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron would not commit to naming QB J.P. Losman as his starting quarterback for 2006. Jauron added that not only the quarterback position will be open, but that "we're going to look at every position as competitive. Everybody is going to come in and compete." On the quarterback position, Jauron said, "I don't think there's anything to be gained at this point to naming a guy. ... We'll see what happens going into training camp. And if we don't have a guy that we've penciled in as a starter there, then we'll let them go in and compete."

QB | Kelly Holcomb | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
During the NFL Combine, Buffalo Bills general manager Marv Levy said there will an open competition for the starting quarterback role between QB J.P. Losman and QB Kelly Holcomb.

QB | Aaron Brooks | New Orleans Saints | Fantasy

QB | Tom Brady | New England Patriots | Injury News, Fantasy
Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (groin) underwent surgery last week. He was able to play in a golf tournament Tuesday, Feb. 21. ''I just had surgery last week, so I'm just trying to take it easy a little bit on the hard swings," Brady told reporters in Miami.

QB | Josh McCown | Arizona Cardinals | Fantasy
Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins QB Gus Frerotte may have to restructure his contract to remain with the team in 2006. That was the sentiment Tuesday, Feb. 21, from agent Marvin Demoff, who represents Frerotte. "We've had discussions with Gus, but not much has been resolved," Demoff said. It's believed the Dolphins want Frerotte to accept a significant pay cut from the $4.43 million he is to earn. The extra cap space would allow room to pursue another quarterback. If unable to land an established starter and an agreement can be reached with Frerotte on a restructured contract, a source said the Dolphins may pursue Arizona Cardinals QB Josh McCown. Under that scenario, the 26-year-old McCown would compete with Frerotte for a starting spot.

QB | Gus Frerotte | Miami Dolphins | Fantasy

Under that scenario, the 26-year-old McCown would compete with Frerotte for a starting spot.

QB | Brett Favre | Green Bay Packers | Fantasy
Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports it has been 51 days since the Green Bay Packers played their final game but general manager Ted Thompson still doesn't know if QB Brett Favre intends to play in 2006. "We talk every week or 10 days," Thompson said, adding that it appeared Favre still was weighing his decision.

QB | Kerry Collins | Oakland Raiders | Draft Information, Fantasy
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Oakland Raiders will meet with reps for QB Kerry Collins this week in Indianapolis at the NFL Combine. It sounds as if the sides are headed for a mutual divorce, with the Raiders apprehensive about paying Collins the $2.5 million roster bonus due to him next week as well as his $6 million base salary for 2006, and the quarterback apprehensive about returning to Oakland to be the starter.

QB | Joey Harrington | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports the Detroit Lions apparently still feel QB Joey Harrington can be their starting quarterback. Head coach Rod Marinelli and Lions president Matt Millen gave strong support to Harrington as the starter Tuesday, Feb. 21, in an interview with local beat writers. Harrington's status has grown stronger, with input from Mike Martz, who was hired as offensive coordinator Feb. 7. Harrington's contract it not an issue, Millen said. Harrington has two years left on his contract, and a bonus payment of $4 million is due on June 15. "I think we have our starter," Millen said.

QB | Chad Pennington | New York Jets | Fantasy
Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets QB Chad Pennington apparently is agreeable to taking a pay cut to remain with the team. However, agent Tom Condon has taken a hard line. The quarterback, who has been asked to take an $8 million pay cut, is scheduled to earn $9 million next season. The Jets want to chop his base salary to $1 million and give him a chance to recoup his money in incentives. "Condon doesn't want to lose that $8 million," one agent said. "He would be embarrassed. It wouldn't look good when he goes on the recruiting trail. I think it's more about that than Chad." The Jets must make a decision by Mar. 3, when Pennington is due a $3 million roster bonus. Pennington, however, appears to have few options, who wants a sore-armed quarterback coming off two rotator cuff surgeries? At this point it would be surprising if he didn't reach a middle ground with the club and return.

QB | Ben Roethlisberger | Pittsburgh Steelers | Fantasy
Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's early success has some concerned that it might affect his work ethic. Many scouts believe he has several aspects of his game to improve before he becomes an elite quarterback, including accuracy and consistency. He is the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl and he raised some eyebrows when he turned down a Pro Bowl invite to go to the Grammy Awards.

QB | Matt Leinart | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft Information
Gary Myers, of the New York Daily News, reports USC QB Matt Leinart is not expected to throw at the NFL Combine.

QB | Alex D. Smith | San Francisco 49ers | Fantasy
Dennis Georgatos, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith remains confident in his abilities and he is looking forward to 2006 and not back on 2005. Little went right for Smith in his first year with the 49ers. Smith failed to win the starting job in training camp, suffered a midseason knee injury that cost him five games, fumbled 10 times and threw 11 interceptions before completing his first (and only) touchdown pass. Smith, who won't turn 22 until May, admitted that his very public growing pains as 49ers quarterback frustrated him. Nothing bothered Smith more than the fumbles. Smith said he's more conscious now of his grip, especially when handling newer, slicker footballs. Smith returned from the knee injury to start the last five games, winning the final two. Learning the scheme installed by Norv Turner is the next challenge for Smith, who has been meeting regularly with the team's new offensive coordinator. Smith said he'll lean on his first-year experiences to try to make the transition seamless.

QB | Marc Bulger | St. Louis Rams | Fantasy
Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams have been linked to trade talk about Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper. Team sources, speaking Friday, Feb. 17, on the condition of anonymity, emphatically denied any interest in Culpepper. One Rams official was incredulous that the subject would even come up. QB Marc Bulger, after all, is a former Pro Bowl quarterback on a team that has its share of glaring holes, particularly on defense.

QB | Carson Palmer | Cincinnati Bengals | Injury News, Fantasy
Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis expects QB Carson Palmer (knee) to be his quarterback for the 2006 season-opener. Lewis said, "I don't have any doubt that he'll be our Opening Day quarterback. I think it's a rush if maybe he'd be ready in three months. We don't have three months. We have (six) months."

Running Back

RB | Reuben Droughns | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said the team needs to get a running back to complement RB Reuben Droughns. "Even though he gained 1,000 yards and he's tough and hard-nosed, which we appreciate and which we want in Cleveland, I think maybe it would be good if we had somebody who could complement him, maybe to take some of the load off him," said Crennel.

RB | Edgerrin James | Free Agent Players | Fantasy
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports while the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed WR Reggie Wayne and still can use the franchise tag on another player, the team likely will not use the tag on RB Edgerrin James, due to salary cap ramifications. James has said he is prepared to play for another team in 2006.

"He's earned that right," said Peterson, who wanted Holmes to know his status with the team, regardless of the salary cap and that RB Larry Johnson has been declared the starter for 2006. Holmes is expected to undergo testing within the next week to determine if he's neurologically sound.

RB | Michael Bennett | Minnesota Vikings | Free Agency News, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, the Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings have informed unrestricted free agent RB Michael Bennett he will not be re-signed by the team.

RB | Warrick Dunn | Atlanta Falcons | Fantasy
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Atlanta Falcons definitely want RB Warrick Dunn back in 2006, but his salary cap number is higher than they want to pay at $8.5 million. Both sides have opened talks on trying to restructure a deal that would allow Dunn to remain in Atlanta. Chances are the Falcons and Dunn can hammer out a new agreement, but there still is more work to be done.

RB | Ricky Williams | Miami Dolphins | Fantasy
Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams has begun the appeal process to avoid a one-year suspension for a fourth violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, according to a source. The process is expected to take four to six weeks. While the source did not disclose details of the appeal, the person said Williams did not test positive for marijuana. Another anonymous source said the violation is due to a failed drug test, but the source did not identify the substance.

RB | Greg Jones | Jacksonville Jaguars | Fantasy
Bart Hubbuch, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars see RB Greg Jones as their version of Tampa Bay Buccaneers FB Mike Alstott. The may is expected to expand Jones' role in 2006. Jones began his career at tailback before concerns about his quickness prompted a move to fullback last year. Jones performed much better than expected in his new position, but chronic injuries to RB Fred Taylor in the second half of the season prompted the Jaguars to turn to Jones as their featured back. After Jones had back-to-back 100 yard rushing games, the team saw him in a different light. With his powerful body and straight-ahead running style, Jones should be more prominent in the team's 2006 game plans.

RB | Samkon Gado | Green Bay Packers | Injury News, Fantasy
The Sports Xchange reports Green Bay Packers RB Samkon Gado (knee) has resumed running and lifting in his recovery from a torn MCL in his right knee sustained late in the 2005 season.

RB | Kevin Jones | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz views RB Kevin Jones as a 30-carry back. Martz said Jones is the type of explosive player "you can hang your hat on." Martz said, "When you want a guy who can carry the mail, so to speak, and can do that 35 times a game, he can do that. Or he can turn around the next week and carry it five times and catch 10 passes. He has that type of versatility; we just need to shine it up a little bit."

Fullback

FB | Mike Alstott | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Fantasy
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want FB Mike Alstott back in 2006 and they have been discussing a new contract with him. Moulds is scheduled to make $7.1 million in salary next season and would count about $11 million toward the salary cap. If the team chooses to release Moulds in March, the cap savings would amount to roughly $5.5 million.

WR | Terrell Owens | Philadelphia Eagles | Free Agency News, Fantasy
Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Philadelphia Eagles WR Terrell Owens' agent Drew Rosenhaus remained mum if Owens will make a visit with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have a mild interest in the wide receiver who likely will become a free agent next week. The Buccaneers would be hard-pressed to create enough salary cap room to make a serious run at Owens.

WR | Reggie Wayne | Indianapolis Colts | Fantasy
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports while the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed WR Reggie Wayne and still can use the franchise tag on another player, the team likely will not use the tag on RB Edgerrin James, due to salary cap ramifications. James has said he is prepared to play for another team in 2006.

WR | Nate Burleson | Minnesota Vikings | Free Agency News, Fantasy

WR | Charles Rogers | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions WR Charles Rogers will return to the Lions in 2006, team president Matt Millen said Tuesday, Feb. 21. He had better be ready to work hard. Rogers is relatively cheap to bring back. His lack of playing time kept him from triggering escalator clauses in his contract, and his base salary is $757,917 for 2006. The new coaches say they will demand more of Rogers and fellow WRs Roy E. Williams and Mike Williams.

WR | Antonio Bryant | Cleveland Browns | Free Agency News

His agent, Joe Linta, said he has not heard whether Denver will exercise the option. The Broncos could attempt to restructure the deal. If no agreement is reached, they could release Putzier. Last season Putzier split time with TE Stephen Alexander. "If Denver does exercise the option, I would hope they'd give him the chance to catch 60, 70 balls and become a Pro Bowl-caliber tight end I know he can be," Linta said. Putzier's contract is likely to be addressed next week.

TE | Aaron Shea | Cleveland Browns | Free Agency News

"A little birdie told me that, but birds can bring all kinds of different messages, so who knows?" Negotiations on a new deal have yet to commence, he said. "I want to stay, for sure. I love this place, love our fans and what the Steelers mean to this place and how much our fans mean to us. Udeze had microfracture surgery performed on his knee, an advanced procedure that doesn't always allow football players to get all the way back to 100 percent. This winter, however, Udeze has begun running agility drills at the team's practice facility. Udeze will have to beat out DE Darrion Scott or DE Erasmus James to regain his starting spot in 2006.
