"He'll (Leinart) go in the second, and then John Navarre will go in the third," Green said. Leinart has taken extensive reps with the second team since arriving at the training camp, which ends Thursday, Aug. 17, at Northern Arizona University.

QB | Ben Roethlisberger | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury News, Fantasy
NFL.com reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (thumb) left practice early Wednesday, Aug. 16, with an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand. "I think he hit his thumb, on the next-to-last play he was in there, on a shoulder pad," head coach Bill Cowher said after practice at St. Vincent College. "He's upstairs (in the team's facilities), so we'll look at that, assess it, and I'll probably have more information tomorrow." Cowher said he does not believe that Roethlisberger's hand or thumb problems are chronic or the result of arthritis.

QB | Carson Palmer | Cincinnati Bengals | Injury News
Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis says QB Carson Palmer (knee) will ultimately decide when he will be ready to take the field in preseason action. "The doctor's telling me he's fine and he's ready to go," Lewis said of Palmer. "But it's up to him. There's nothing medically, one way or another, that's going to make a difference this week, next week or two weeks from now. ... When he's ready, he's got to be the biggest judge of that."

QB | Dan Orlovsky | Detroit Lions | Fantasy

The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears QB Rex Grossman is not worried about his 3-of-11 performance in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 11. He's looking forward to putting it behind him and playing well Friday, Aug. 18, against the San Diego Chargers. Grossman added, "That wasn't the way I play, that just wasn't me. The thing is just transfer what I've been able to do on the practice field to the game field." He is expected to play longer against the Chargers and Grossman is expecting a better result. "My mechanics were bad and that's not me. I'm out here and I work on the fundamentals and things. I just broke down a little bit on a few plays in the game. Just get back to basics really, and don't get too excited or too whatever - just go out and play like you know you can."

QB | Aaron Brooks | Oakland Raiders | Fantasy
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports there may be a quarterback controversy brewing with the Oakland Raiders. QB Aaron Brooks entered Raiders camp as the starter, but through two preseason games, he has completed only two passes, one in each game. His competition for the job, QB Andrew Walter, has been inconsistent in the preseason. Neither quarterback has distinguished himself so far, neither has seized the starting job, and now the statistics themselves suggest that the Raiders' starting quarterback job is wide open. Head coach Art Shell said Brooks remains the starter, but he would not commit to him for the long term.

QB | Drew Brees | New Orleans Saints | Fantasy
Michael Wallace, of the Clarion Ledger, reports New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said Tuesday, Aug. 15, he emerged from his first preseason test with the normal bumps, bruises and aches that normally come in the days after playing a game. However, Brees' surgically repaired right shoulder has held up fine, he said. "The shoulder feels great, just great," Brees said after this morning's practice. "I just need more reps and to get into more of a rhythm. I just want to get used to taking that live rush and getting ready for the season."

QB | Drew Bledsoe | Dallas Cowboys | Fantasy
Todd Archer, of the Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe has faced many challenges in his NFL career and now he faces potential competition from backup QB Tony Romo. "To be honest, I have no problem people talking up Tony, and he deserves to be talked about," Bledsoe said. "I think he has a long future in the league, but from my standpoint, I'm approaching this as I'm getting ready to play the season. And I'm doing everything I can to make sure that as the quarterback here I'm giving us the best chance to win the ballgame." Head coach Bill Parcells headed off talk of a quarterback controversy Monday, Aug. 14, by saying Bledsoe will start the Sept. 10 opener at Jacksonville, barring injury. Parcells did not say Bledsoe would start next week's preseason game at Shreveport, La., against New Orleans, but only because the coaching staff has not gone over the plan yet. Romo said he has thought about his future, especially with the ongoing talks. "I want to be a Dallas Cowboy," Romo said. "I like it here. The organization has been great to me. I would love to say I spent all my years as a Dallas Cowboy and finish my career here. That would be a highlight."

QB | J.P. Losman | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports the quarterback competition at Buffalo Bills training camp took a definitive turn Monday night, Aug. 14, as head coach Dick Jauron declared QB J.P. Losman the lead candidate to land the starting job. "In terms of our quarterback situation J.P. is definitely the frontrunner at this point," said Jauron. "He will start the next game and he will get more of the reps in practice this week. It won't be 50-50 and then we'll see where it goes after this weekend." Losman was excited to get the lion's share of the reps in Monday night's workout, but was not about to take anything for granted.

QB | Brian Griese | Chicago Bears | Fantasy
K.C. Johnson, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears QB Rex Grossman is still the team's starting quarterback, according to head coach Lovie Smith. QB Brian Griese played well in his preseason game and fueled talk of a quarterback controversy. However, Griese isn't even thinking about it and added, "I'm thinking about trying to get better as a player, learning this offense, getting used to (offensive coordinator Ron Turner) and the way he calls plays, and really proving myself to the guys on the team."

Running Back

RB | Clinton Portis | Washington Redskins | Injury News, Fantasy

Given the way RBs Mike Bell and Tatum Bell are running, Dayne's aspirations of being the feature back may be fading away. Dayne can't even say how the injury occurred. "I just got in the huddle, did some reps against the defense and got in the flow. We'll see how it is next week. Anybody wants to get back on the field when they're injured so it's definitely positive."

Dungy said, " The thing people say (is), 'Well, they didn't get the chance to run.' We know these guys can run and they're going to make yards running the ball. (But) it was really a good game for us to see Dominic and Joseph running pass routes, picking up (blitzes). They did a lot of blitz protection, pick-ups that they had to do. We got to see a lot of things we needed to see. All of the guys did well."

He's got a little more recent past experience, but he's in that same boat."

RB | Eric Shelton | Carolina Panthers | Fantasy
The Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers RB Eric Shelton didn't enter the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 12, until midway through the fourth quarter, and then with the Panthers starting at their own 2. Like we ran the ball 99 percent of the time to Willie's side and 1 percent to the other side. With or without Willie, we have a good offensive line. With or without Willie, I'm going to get my yards. Nobody's going to stop me."

RB | Wali Lundy | Houston Texans | Fantasy

RB | DeAngelo Williams | Carolina Panthers | Fantasy
Dan Wiederer, of the Fayetteville (NC) Observer, reports Carolina Panthers rookie RB DeAngelo Williams got off to a slow start Saturday, Aug. 12, in his preseason debut. At times indecisive and slow getting to the hole, his numbers were hardly eye-popping. Three times Williams was stopped for no gain or negative yardage. And after his first seven carries, he had gained but one yard. It wasn't until a 20-yard burst late in the first half that Williams showed the speed and vision that convinced Carolina to draft him last April with the 27th pick overall. That run, which included a cutback and a sample of Williams' breakaway speed, gave the rookie from Memphis 21 yards on eight carries to finish his night. As it stands now, Williams is second on the Panthers' depth chart behind RB DeShaun Foster. But given Foster's history of injury, most in the Panthers' organization expect Williams to receive extensive playing time at some point this season.

Head coach Bill Parcells, who had been non-committal about Owens' possible return during his daily news conference a few hours earlier, said he would need to see how sharp he looks before deciding if he will play in the nationally-televised game Monday night. "He has missed a lot of time," Parcells said. "So it wouldn't be so much whether he practiced or not as how he looked while he practiced and did he get enough practice to make a good judgment about playing him. I don't want to jeopardize the early part of the season by making a mistake here, I really don't."

"People don't understand how committed he is to this," a source close to Branch said. "He's not going to come in until he gets something he feels that is fair." Branch is also staying in Boston these days, fueling the notion that he'll report any day now. That said, Branch has shown greater resolve than most people expected. He has racked up approximately $250,000 in fines for his holdout so far (if the Patriots choose to enforce the language of the collective bargaining agreement), but if Branch's holdout continues into the season, an NFL Players Association source said the union would likely advise him to show up for the final nine weeks.
