RB | Wali Lundy | Houston Texans | Fantasy
Kristie Rieken, of the Associated Press, reports Houston Texans RB Ron Dayne is happy to be playing for Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak. Though the coach has said rookie RB Wali Lundy will start in the opener Sunday, Sept. 10, against Philadelphia, Dayne did take some snaps with the first team in practice Tuesday, Sept. 5. "Ronny is just what I knew he was," Kubiak said. "He jumped into the huddle today, made no mistakes and knows exactly what we're doing." At 5-foot-10 and 245 pounds, Dayne is also about 30 pounds heavier than Lundy and RB Vernand Morency, making him potentially valuable in short-yardage situations. Dayne said he's "almost there" in his recovery from a toe injury.

RB | Clinton Portis | Washington Redskins | Injury News, Fantasy
Joseph White, of the Associated Press, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) did not suit up Tuesday, Sept. 5, for practice. Portis didn't comment as he left the field. Head coach Joe Gibbs said he needs to see Portis practice before putting him in the game. The players will have off Wednesday, Sept. 6, followed by three days of full practice Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 7-9. "He is still day to day," Gibbs said. "He had a real good day in the weight room and rehab also. He is doing a real good job with it and will continue to expand what he is doing. It is still day to day, though. He feels like he is making good progress."

RB | Eric Shelton | Carolina Panthers | Fantasy
The Carolina Panthers appear hopeful RB Eric Shelton recently admitted he was surprised to make the team's final roster, but it appears as if the team wants to give him another chance to win their short-yardage role.

RB | LaMont Jordan | Oakland Raiders | Fantasy
Josh Dubow, of the Associated Press, reports Oakland Raiders RB LaMont Jordan is coming off a solid 2005 season, but he knows he needs to perform better in 2006. "When you're in the AFC West you have to compete against those running backs (RBs LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson)," Jordan said Monday, Sept. 4. "Last year, it was good. I got 1,000 yards, yada, yada, yada all of that. But it wasn't a good feeling not being respected as a running back. In order for this team to be where we want to be, the running game will get us there and everything else will fall in place." Head coach Art Shell also wants the running game to be able to pound the ball. "The constant is he is going to try to be physical with his football team and try to run the ball down your throat," Shell said. "That's his personality. He wants to get after you physically and that's our personality too." Shell has promised a return to the power running game this season, which is just what Jordan wants. The Raiders have struggled at that in the preseason, averaging 3.0 yards per carry as they've dealt with injuries and position switches on the offensive line. The lack of a running game is a big reason why they've won only two division games the past three seasons, including a 0-6 record in 2005.

RB | Antowain Smith | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports free agent RB Antowain Smith (Texans) worked out with the Miami Dolphins Monday, Sept. 4.

RB | Brian Westbrook | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury News, Fantasy
During his press conference Monday, Sept. 4, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid addressed the status of RB Brian Westbrook (foot). "Yeah, he's getting there. I'm not going to get into all of the percentages, but he's getting in there and he's feeling more comfortable. I think he's ready to go and I'm not too worried about that."

RB | Thomas Jones | Chicago Bears | Injury News, Fantasy
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said the team feels good about where RB Cedric Benson (left shoulder) is, an indication he could be ready to play Sunday, Sept. 10, at Green Bay after not dressing for a preseason game for the second straight year. As previously noted, RB Thomas Jones will start the game. ''We hope (Benson) can be counted on,'' head coach Lovie Smith said. ''He's a big part of what we will hopefully be doing.''

RB | Willis McGahee | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Bucky Gleason, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills RB Willis McGahee is ready to put a disappointing 2005 season behind him and to start the 2006 season. "I can't be more excited," he said after practice Sunday, Sept. 3. "The season is finally getting here, and I'm ready to go out there and rock and roll." All along, the Bills have said they want to get him the ball. He might be their one marquee player on offense, one blessed with the size and strength to break down a defense and the speed to break open a game. The Bills have been hesitant to reveal any concrete goals this season. The emphasis has been on simply getting better, which is bound to happen if McGahee can break out with a big year. Opposing teams will focus on McGahee until QB J.P. Losman proves he can hurt them with his arm. McGahee figures to play a more prominent role in the passing game, which is also something new. McGahee arrived in training camp lighter and quicker than in recent years. "I'll be a premier back," McGahee said. "I'm not worried about that. It's just the fact that we have to be patient and let everything come."

If the NFL wins the motion, which should be decided today, that combined grievance will be heard Sept. 14 and 15. Kessler revealed that if Branch loses both grievances, he will seek damages (through arbitration) against the Patriots for extra compensation this year. If the NFL is not granted their motion to combine the grievances, the first grievance will proceed and tentatively is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9. If the Branch side loses, they will proceed with the second grievance. The second grievance, whether it's combined with the first or remains separate, will be heard by Prof. Stephen Burbank of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
