NFL Draft Analysis: Curtis Painter, QB, Purdue Boilermakers

by Tim Piotrowski on April 3, 2009 @ 01:00:00 PDT

Purdue University quarterback Curtis Painter is entering the 2009 NFL Draft after four productive seasons in college. Painter did not have the season he would have liked in 2008 since all of his stats decreased from his junior year. He finished the season with 2,400 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 10 games. He missed two games during the season because of a shoulder injury but returned to play the last two contests.

The 23-year-old was able to put up some terrific numbers during the season, throwing for at least 250 yards in four games, including a 448-yard, five-touchdown performance in his final game at Purdue.

  • Shows very good accuracy
  • Throws the ball with good velocity
  • Can make all the NFL throws
  • At 6-foot-2 7/8, has adequate height for a quarterback
  • Has a quick release

  • Never really progressed the way a four-year starter should
  • Does not have great mobility
  • Throws ball into coverage too often
  • Has tendency to lock onto receivers
  • Has trouble adjusting when blitzed
  • Not experienced taking snaps under center

Expected draft placement

Painter played well in college but likely will not hear his name until later on the second day of the 2009 NFL Draft or could also be an undrafted free agent. The one thing that Painter will likely struggle with in the NFL is the getting the ball from under center. He primary played out of the shotgun last season and will need some time to get comfortable under center. He will be a No. 3 quarterback for whomever he is drafted by, so the team could bring him along slowly and develop him into a possible backup or even a starter down the road.

Painter reportedly has received interest from the Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams; there are other teams that could be interested in Painter in the later rounds, of course, and it's anyone's guess as to who could be that late in the process.
