The deal reduces Ward's 2009 salary and includes a signing bonus that will be prorated over the life of the contract. Ward was originally scheduled to earn $5.8 million this season, and his cap figure would have been $8.55 million. Parker said that the new contract should ensure that Ward retires as a member of the Steelers. Ward has not yet signed the deal, and whether it will be four or five years hasn't yet been determined.

The contract includes $15.5 million in guaranteed money. The deal also include an addendum that will allow Hill to keep the guaranteed money even if he is suspended because of an offseason incident.

Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman (knee) is returning to the practice field during this weekend's minicamp for the first time since having knee surgery. He said he has more to prove than ever this year and seems resigned to the thought that the Chargers will let him depart after the 2009 or 2010 season. He said he feels his "footballhood" has been questioned. "I've done nothing but prove I will bust my (rear) harder than anyone else," Merriman said. In regards to 2009, Merriman plans to bring his A-game and then some. "It's going to be an interesting year. I'm bringing all the ruckus. I'm going to do the 'Lights Out' dance so often people will be glad to see me go - like, 'Get that dance out of here,'" Merriman said.

Bears trainer Tim Bream examined Briggs and he worked out with a bandage covering the cut.

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports it is questionable if the team wants to extend the contract of WR Anquan Boldin this year. Boldin has two years remaining on his current deal, and there is some question of his worth after the lack of interest in trading for him. In addition, the team has re-signed QB Kurt Warner, and with the hefty contracts likely to be commanded by SS Adrian Wilson and LB Karlos Dansby, the Cardinals could wait until 2010 to try to re-sign Boldin.

Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers OLB Shaun Phillips was cited for misdemeanor battery over the weekend. A security guard at the Ivy Hotel in San Diego said Phillips hit him in the face on the rooftop bar. A police spokeswoman said there was a brawl at the bar that precipitated the incident, but noted Chargers players were not involved in the fight. According to police, it is the second time this month Phillips was involved in a battery case. On April 11, a security guard at Stingaree said Phillips punched and choked him. Phillips was named as a suspect in that case. He has not, however, been arrested or cited. Phillips said he did not have anything to do with the incident at the Ivy.
