Miguel Cabrera heading for offseason of recovery

By KFFL Staff

First Baseman

1B | Allen Craig | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 1B Allen Craig (foot) is expected to bat fourth and serve as the designated hitter in Game 1 of the World Series against the Boston Red Sox in the American League park. Craig went through an extra batting practice session Sunday, Oct. 20, but he has yet to test his injury during defensive drills, suggesting he might only be available in the first two games as a DH.

1B | Adrian Gonzalez | Los Angeles Dodgers | Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez has changed his plate discipline in recent seasons; he led the National League in walks in 2009 (119) and was third in 2010 (93) but walked just 74 times in 2011 , 42 times in 2012 and 47 times this year. A shoulder injury forced Gonzalez to attempt to pull the ball more often to generate more power. "He's a different hitter," hitting coach Mark McGwire said. "He's just a different hitter. He used to hit home runs to left center field, center field and because of the surgery, he's lost that. It's something he's working at. He's two years out since the surgery, and he's changed his approach." However, Gonzalez's isolated power is also down since his surgery, but he's swinging at over 36 percent of pitches outside of the strike zone compared to just over 26 percent in 2009.

Keep this in mind as draft season approaches in 2014. A-Gon is unlikely to approach a 30-homer season again, and his average could easily come down a level, as well, if the walks continue to plummet. At a position known for producing power, Gonzalez no longer looks to be that type of player.

Second Baseman

2B | Alexander Guerrero | Los Angeles Dodgers | Transaction, Fantasy
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Cuban INF Alexander Guerrero to a four-year, $28 million deal Monday, Oct. 21. Guerrero is a 26-year-old that can play shortstop and second base. He established residency in Haiti earlier this year after defecting from Cuba. He'll be the favorite to become the starting second baseman in spring training next year.

SS | Xander Bogaerts | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell would not commit to a lineup for Game 1 of the World Series when asked Monday, Oct. 21. However, he hinted that SS Xander Bogaerts and OF Jonny Gomes are likely to start. "Can't go away from a certain lineup that's gained momentum," Farrell said.

Third Baseman

3B | Taylor Green | Milwaukee Brewers | Transaction,
The Milwaukee Brewers re-signed RP Zach Kroenke and 3B Taylor Green to minor league deals Monday, Oct. 21. Green will receive an invitation to spring training.

3B | Miguel Cabrera | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera (groin) may need surgery to fix a tear in his groin. Cabrera hit .262 with two home runs in 11 playoff games this year. General manager Dave Dombrowski said resting Cabrera for a couple weeks at the end of the season wouldn't have helped him get healthy for the playoffs.

Keep tabs on Miggy's status this winter and how long he'll need to recover if he undergoes surgery. If he's healthy entering spring training next year, he should continue to be one of the first several picks off the draft board.

OF | Wilkin Ramirez | Minnesota Twins | Transaction
Minnesota Twins OF Wilkin Ramirez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester Tuesday, Oct. 22.

OF | Matt Kemp | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp (ankle) had several spurs and a loose body removed from his left ankle Monday, Oct. 21, and the procedure also involved a microfracture on the talus bone. He'll be in a splint for two weeks and a non-weight bearing boot for another two weeks, and the team is hoping he's ready for the regular season next year.

SP | John Lackey | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SP John Lackey is expected to start Game 2 of the World Series Thursday, Oct. 24, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He worked in Game 2 of the American League Division Series and Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said SP Adam Wainwright will start in Game 1 of the World Series against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday, Oct. 23, and SP Michael Wacha will pitch in Game 2. Beyond that, it's unknown when SPs Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn will pitch. SP Shelby Miller is expected to stay in the bullpen.
