Two of Washington's stars go under the knife

By KFFL Staff

First Baseman

1B | Jose Abreu | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
In his weekly question and answer column, Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Paul Hoynes suggests the Cleveland Indians were never serious contenders for OF Jose Abreu. Hoynes said a lot of clubs felt the Chicago White Sox paid too much for Abreu at $68 million for six years. He's reportedly not as athletic as Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig and Oakland Athletics OF Yoenis Cespedes and is more of a DH/first base type who is going to have to put up big numbers to justify the contract.

1B | Allen Craig | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 1B Allen Craig (foot) had to be carted off the field after scoring the winning run on a walk-off obstruction call in Game 3 of the World Series Saturday, Oct. 27, when he had to make a slide at home plate. "I feel OK," he said after the game. "It definitely was a little sore running home. We're going to see how it responds." Craig's availability for the remainder of the World Series is unknown.

1B | Adam LaRoche | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (elbow) recently underwent surgery to remove loose bodies in his left elbow and will be sidelined four to six weeks. He should be ready for the start of spring training.

Third Baseman

3B | Chase Headley | San Diego Padres | Fantasy
The San Diego Padres recently completed organizational meetings in Arizona and came away believing they will retain 3B Chase Headley in his walk year rather than trade him. San Diego will listen to offers for the switch-hitting third baseman, who has been on the New York Yankees' radar. The Padres will listen if teams are interested, but San Diego believes it is more in a win-now mode and will deal him only for cost-effective players ready for the majors now or close to the majors.

3B | Miguel Cabrera | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera (groin) will have surgery next week after a severe groin pull.

The fantasy stud is expected to be ready to return well in time for spring training, so he is expected to be fine for the start of next season.

Catcher

C | Curt Casali | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy
Tampa Bay Rays C prospect Curt Casali (elbow) left the Arizona Fall League due to right elbow inflammation.

C | Mike Napoli | Boston Red Sox | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo said 1B Mike Napoli fielded grounders at third base prior to Game 3 of the World Series. He has not played the position professionally since 2004 and is not expected to start any games at the hot corner but the Red Sox just wanted to give him preparation for an "emergency situation."

Outfielder

OF | Nolan Reimold | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles OF Nolan Reimold (neck) hopes to return from neck surgery and would like to stay with the team, although he may not be tendered a contract for the 2014 season. Reimold said that he goes to his rehab sessions two or three times a week and is having a much easier time with his recovery from neck surgery than the first procedure in 2012 that ended his season after one month. "I think I'm pretty far along," Reimold said. "The surgeon did a lot of different things that helped heal the bone faster. At this point, it's probably almost fused up, but I'm sure he's going to make absolutely sure before he says to do anything."

OF | Shane Victorino | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) was scratched from the lineup for Game 4 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals due to back tightness. OF Jonny Gomes replaced Victorino in the lineup, and OF Daniel Nava shifted from left field to right field as a result. Gomes ended up hitting a home run in the game.

OF | Bryce Harper | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper (knee) underwent surgery Friday, Oct. 25, to repair the bursa in his left knee. He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

OF | Carlos Beltran | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Friday, Oct. 25, that he has no lingering concerns about OF Carlos Beltran (rib) and his playability for the rest of the World Series. "He looked pretty normal to me (Thursday)," Matheny said. "Not a lot of apprehension. I didn't see him wincing when he was taking swings, and (he was) moving pretty well in the outfield, good jumps."

Starting Pitcher

SP | Jake Westbrook | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy,
The Cleveland Indians might be interested in St. Louis Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook, if his current team does not pick up his option.

The San Diego Padres have reinstated SPs Cory Luebke (elbow) and Joe Wieland (elbow) from the 60-day disabled list. Both are recovering from Tommy John surgery and hope to pitch during the 2014 season. However, they have experienced setbacks during their rehab that have put them on the longer side of the typical 12-18 month recovery window.

SP | Stephen Strasburg | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (elbow) underwent surgery Friday, Oct. 25, to remove bone chips in his right elbow and will be sidelined four to six weeks. He should be ready for the start of spring training.

SP | Lance Lynn | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy,

SP | Adam Wainwright | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy,
St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright said that he will not pitch on short rest in Game 4 of the World Series. He will toe the rubber against the Boston Red Sox in Game 5.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Fernando Rodney | Tampa Bay Rays | Free Agents, Fantasy
Free agency starts right after the World Series, and it seems unlikely the Tampa Bay Rays will make any preemptive deals. Tampa Bay Times reporter Marc Topkin speculates 1B James Loney and CL Fernando Rodney are among those who will want to explore the market. C Jose Molina could be an interesting call. Decisions on options will also be pending, with OF David DeJesus ($6.5 million, or $1.5 million buyout) the most intriguing.

RP | Chris Perez | Cleveland Indians | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians RPs Cody Allen or Bryan Shaw might be candidates to serve as the closer if RP Chris Perez is traded or non-tendered during the offseason.

RP | Cesar Jimenez | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies RP Cesar Jimenez has rejected his outright assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and has opted to become a free agent.
