Perhaps you folks much better versed than I in technical matters can recommend DSL providers with which you are/have been satisfied to date.
I am looking for price and reliability, with billing statements that are at least comprehensible, and customer service that can actually be reached.
Thanx in advance, since I may not be able to retrieve your recommendations until late PM/tomorrow. Z

I've been with speakeasy for 4 years. They have been voted best DSL provider in the U.S. by DSL reports, and are a small company. Their starting residential package is 1.5/256 for $49.95. Their customer service is unparalleled, and they offer a lot more goodies such as 4 static IP's, 8 email accounts, dialup access should DSL go down, etc...

It's not DSL, but since Comcast took over A T & T the customer services has improved big time.

My mother had Comcast. Yeah they're just wonderful. My mom had technical problems with her service and at one point the support person told her that "if she didn't like it, she should find another provider". This of course was said because the support person knows that my mother had no other alternative in the cable internet market.
So she switched to DSL.

$49.95 per month?

FYB: Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing. Is the $49.95 a 'startup' package or a monthly fee? And yes, I wouldn't give Comcast another thin freakin dime (they already rape me on cable and crap service) PS, I don't have any need for multiple IP addresses, and need only three (maybe four) e-mail destinations.
Thanx

That's to bad and maybe should be reported.
Comcast has been by twice in the last month. ONce to fix the internet and once for the digital tv.
Nice people both times.
Came when they said they would.
And the times Mrs BoSox or I dealt with them on the phone they have been very good. And the speak English.

It's 49.95 per month. I also believe the first 3 months are $19.99. I believe the hardware is free with a rebate, but you should call their sales dept for all the particulars. I do realize that their service is not the cheapest around, however, you need to look at the speed other providers are giving you for a lower price. For example, some providers are giving you DSL for less, but their starting speeds are 768/125.

Comcast is a huge company who deals in phone, cable, and internet service. Some customers will have good experiences and some will have bad experiences, and a company that size will always have good people and bad people working for them. If my mother complained she would likely get an apology from Comcast. But the bottom line is that in the end they(large companies like Comcast) really don't give a crap about you. That's what I like about Speakeasy. They only deal with broadband and they aren't selling you phone service and cable service, so they have a vested interest in making sure their customers are happy.

I'm pretty happy with my SBC DSL.
$26.95 a month.

That's more in line with what I'm looking to pay, but I'm not sure SBC offers their service in the NYC metro.
Frankly, 49 bucks a month is wa-a-a-y more than I would consider for the limited uses I have for internet access. Shoot, I can have a cable modem from the bloodsuckers for 40 after a three-month trial at 19.99

The devil is in the details. I was impressed by that price until I did a search and discovered that for 26.95 you're getting "between" 384kpbs and 1.5Mbps. That's a wide range of speed, and they're not guaranteeing you'll get 1.5M. Further, you have to sign up for a year to get that price. If you go month to month the price is $49.95. Last, it appears that this service is only offered in about 10 states.
My point isn't that it sux and that Speakeasy is better. My point is that anyone who is looking to get DSL needs to take a hard look at the details of what their buying, whether the price is cheaper or not.

Maybe it's just me and I have issues, but is there anyone else out there who, upon hearing DSL, doesn't think of computers? I was going to say Angelina Jolie and Gina Gershon, but I started reading the answers and realized I was way off.

You're right, I go for the year signup for the $26.95 price. But I have no complaints about their service. And that is the first time that I can say that about any Internet provider.

Dude, please don't ruin my mental picture of Gina Gershon by putting Angelina Jolie in it.
