Rangers | Tanner Scheppers to remain in setup role
Texas Rangers RP Tanner Scheppers is 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in 17 outings over 20 innings this year, and he's struck out 12 and walked just four. Scheppers is throwing his fastball in the mid-90s and has touched 98 mph on the gun, but manager Ron Washington said the team will keep him in a setup role. "That's what we're trying to use him as. Future down the road, he has stuff to be a closer. But right now we want his mentality being coming in and giving the ball to Joe (Nathan). And whatever else happens after that down the road, let it happen. But I want his mindset to be he's coming in and getting the ball to the closer," manager Ron Washington said. Scheppers started in college at Fresno State, and he'd like the opportunity to return to a starting role in the long term.
Fantasy Tip: Scheppers, and the rest of the Rangers bullpen for that matter, has been lights out this year. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? That's Washington's approach right now, at least. If Nathan falters or is injured this year, Scheppers could get first crack at ninth-inning duties. The way he's pitching, he deserves to be owned in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.
