Red Sox | Ryan Dempster takes big step Tuesday
Boston Red Sox SP Ryan Dempster had struggled for about a month prior to his start on Tuesday, Aug. 13, against the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two. He spent only 88 pitches before he was removed from the game.
Pitching coach Juan Nieves said that the pitcher was taxed physically during the period in which he struggled, but in last night's outing, Dempster admitted that he was mentally worn down. Nieves believes that's a good sign, because Dempster was focused on every pitch instead of letting his emotions affect his future offerings. The hurler has reportedly made adjustments, but not so much mechanically as psychologically. Nieves also noted that Dempster used his dangerous split-fingered fastball more effectively and that he's better when he conserves his slider for certain situations.
Fantasy Tip: This could be good news for Dempster owners. Monitor his peripherals to see if there are incremental improvements. He may salvage some mixed-league value yet.
