Former NFL S Darren Sharper told witnesses that he and another man had sex with two women without their permission in New Orleans last September, according to a report by a New Orleans police detective. The report says the two women were under the influence of an unknown substance. Sharper has been in a Los Angeles jail since last week after turning himself in because of an arrest warrant that was issued in Louisiana.

Cleveland Browns transition free-agent C Alex Mack said he still plans to test the free-agent market, even though the Browns placed the transition tag on him. "It's an interesting position to be put into to," Mack said. "The transition tag will still allow me to see other teams, which is what we really wanted. … The goal was really to feel out my options. We wanted to know what the Browns are now about, and what other teams are doing." The Browns will have the ability to match any offer Mack receives this offseason.

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel (appendix) is being brought along slowly as he recovers from an appendectomy last month, and he's yet to face hitters in live batting practice. He's thrown off a mound a couple of times in camp. "Everything feels good," said Appel, taken with the No. 1 overall pick out of Stanford last year. "They're taking some precautions after the appendectomy. The training staff wants me to be 100 percent healthy before I start pitching live. I'm taking it slow, just playing catch day by day. I'm kind of building up again after taking a break."

Chicago Cubs RP James Russell (arm), who has been sidelined due to pain in his left arm, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, March 7, and he could pitch in a game next week. Russell was going through a "dead arm" phase.
