Mets | Jenrry Mejia working on scoreless streak

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 19:52:17 -0700

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia allowed four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a win against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday, April 21. He extended his career-high scoreless streak to 13 2/3 innings.

FANTASY TIP: Mejia, who has 25 strikeouts through 22 2/3 innings, has long had potential, but injuries have held him back a bit. He is now healthy and showing what he can do, and that's quite a bit. Fantasy owners in all formats can use a pitcher of his caliber.

Mets | Kyle Farnsworth gets job done

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 19:51:17 -0700

New York Mets RP Kyle Farnsworth converted his first save Monday, April 21, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He worked around a single in a scoreless ninth inning. It was his first save since Sept. 29, 2013.

FANTASY TIP: Farnsworth doesn't have a lot of tread left on the tires, but stranger things have happened. Look how Jason Grilli re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option last season despite being a little long in the tooth. Farnsworth is worth scooping up in all NL-only fantasy formats and deeper mixed rotisserie leagues if you need saves.

San Francisco Giants RP David Huff (quadriceps) left his appearance Monday, April 21, against the Colorado Rockies due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:23:40 -0700

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos OT Orlando Franklin posted on his official Twitter account Monday, April 21, that he is "excited to learn and improve this offseason" at the left guard position. "I will give it my all," Franklin said. He is being moved from offensive tackle to left guard.

Indians | David Murphy stepping up

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:23:01 -0700

Cleveland Indians OF David Murphy entered the game Monday, April 21, against the Kansas City Royals ranked third in the majors with one RBI per 3.47 at-bats.

Indians | Michael Brantley making at-bats count

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:22:27 -0700

Cleveland Indians OF Michael Brantley is making his at-bats count this season. He entered the game Monday, April 21, against the Kansas City Royals with a .284 average, team-high three homers and 16 RBI. Brantley is hitting .316 with runners in scoring position, and he ranks sixth in the majors with one RBI per 4.19 at-bats. "He gives himself a chance every at-bat," manager Terry Francona said.

Indians | Sticking with Carlos Carrasco

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:21:34 -0700

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona thinks it makes more sense for the struggling SP Carlos Carrasco to work through his struggles while in the rotation, seeing if Carrasco can realize his potential. Carrasco is 0-11 with an 8.28 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP in 16 starts since last winning a game as a starter for the Indians June 29, 2011.

FANTASY TIP: If you're a fantasy owner in AL-only leagues, you're likely tired of waiting for Carrasco to "realize his potential." He is simply not getting the job done, and until he does, he is more hurtful than helpful to most owners.

Indians | Lonnie Chisenhall gets chase at cleanup

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:20:53 -0700

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona moved 3B Lonnie Chisenhall to the cleanup spot Monday, April 21, against the Kansas City Royals with C-3B Carlos Santana (rest) resting. "He's been swinging the bat about as good as we've ever seen him," Francona said. "He's got good numbers against (Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie), and it keeps everybody else in place. I think he's swinging the bat really well."

Indians | Carlos Santana gets mental day off

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:20:26 -0700

Cleveland Indians C-3B Carlos Santana was given a "mental" day off Monday, April 21, against the Kansas City Royals. Manager Terry Francona said Santana's only task after his pregame workout was to relax. "There's just a few reasons where I thought it'd be good for him," Francona said. "(It's) just because he's starting to chase some balls out of the zone. You can tell he's getting a little anxious. He's always had that volatile swing, but he stays in the zone so well. And (Sunday), he really started chasing."

Indians | Jason Giambi to serve as part-time DH

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 18:19:36 -0700

Cleveland Indians DH Jason Giambi (rib) was slotted in the seventh spot of the batting order Monday, April 21, against the Kansas City Royals. He will serve as a part-time designated hitter, pinch hitter and clubhouse presence.

FANTASY TIP: Giambi is 43 years old, so it's no secret he is a shell of his former self from a fantasy perspective. However, he can still be useful in deeper AL-only formats for his power. He swatted nine homers in 71 games last season, and he had a 1.181 OPS in the ninth inning. He also had a .271 average with a .960 OPS with runners in scoring position in 2013, so Giambi is still an offensive force, especially in clutch situations.

Seahawks | Terrelle Pryor acquired

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 17:06:07 -0700

The Seattle Seahawks acquired QB Terrelle Pryor from the Oakland Raiders Monday, April 21, in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in this year's draft. He will compete with QBs Tarvaris Jackson and B.J. Daniels for the backup job to QB Russell Wilson. Pryor is scheduled to make $705,000 this year.

FANTASY TIP: Pryor can be ignored in all fantasy leagues unless he wins the backup job and Wilson goes down with an injury during the season.

Brewers | Khris Davis scratched with illness

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 17:01:30 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers OF Khris Davis (illness) was scratched from the lineup with an illness Monday, April 21.

FANTASY TIP: Remove him from your lineup immediately. It could be another day or two before he's feeling good enough to return.

Rockies | Michael Cuddyer not worried about injury

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 16:40:34 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) doesn't think his hamstring injury is very serious. "We got an MRI done, saw some pictures and it showed that it was strained," Cuddyer said. "It's a minor strain. It's in the tendon area (by the knee) more than it is in the belly of the muscle. I don't know how long it's going to be before I'm back."

FANTASY TIP: Cuddyer should be able to return from the DL when he's eligible. However, he's never had a hamstring injury before, so this might be something that keeps him out for longer than expected. Keep track of his progress in the coming weeks.

Athletics | Jake Elmore close to rehab assignment

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 16:30:29 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Jake Elmore (quadriceps) is close to starting a rehab assignment.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz's velocity down

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 16:30:03 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz's velocity has been down early in the season, but Buchholz feels that his arm strength is getting there. "Not quite there. It feels like it's getting better," said Buchholz, who now sits at 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA. "Later in the last two games I felt if I wanted to reach back, 92-93 (mph) was there, but that usually comes pretty easy. Struggling with that a little bit now. It'll come together. Still got a lot of time left in this first half to put it all together and go from there." Both Buchholz and manager John Farrell are insisting that he is healthy. Buchholz allowed six runs and seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles Monday, April 21.
