Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:12:41 -0700

Updating a previous report, South Carolina QB Connor Shaw will visit the Cleveland Browns Friday, April 25, and the Browns will work out Shaw privately Saturday, April 26 on the South Carolina campus, according to a league source.

South Carolina QB Connor Shaw has worked out for the New England Patriots twice, including for their quarterbacks coach.

Pirates | Russell Martin to return Friday

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:09:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Russell Martin (body) said he'll return to the lineup Friday, April 25. Martin has been dealing with "lower body" soreness, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

FANTASY TIP: Make sure you have Martin in your starting lineup for tomorrow's games. But check his status before gametime to make sure he's indeed back.

White Sox | Dayan Viciedo hot

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:05:28 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Dayan Viciedo entered the day Thursday, April 24, hitting an American League-best .354 with a .410 average in his last 10 games. Viciedo's on-base percentage of .403 has been especially impressive. Hitting coach Todd Steverson suggested that too many expectations were likely put on Viciedo when he initially arrived in the big leagues.

FANTASY TIP: Viciedo went 3-for-4 and fell a homer short of the cycle Thursday to stay hot. Improved plate discipline and pitch recognition are helping Viciedo in this hot streak. Remember that he's been a streaky hitter in the past, but consistent playing time and his new approach may help him take the next step.

White Sox | Gordon Beckham to be starter at 2B

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:00:30 -0700

Chicago White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham will resume the role of the starting second baseman now that he's back from the disabled list. Beckham hit .267 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 103 games for the team last year. "You don't lose that spot just because you're hurt," manager Robin Ventura said. "So we expect him to be in there." 2B Marcus Semien will go back to a backup role.

FANTASY TIP: Beckham is back in the starting role, but if he doesn't hit, Semien could at least mix in frequently at the keystone. As long as he's starting every day, Beckham is decent middle infield insurance in cavernous mixed setups.

White Sox | Conor Gillaspie scratched

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:59:14 -0700

Chicago White Sox 3B Conor Gillaspie (hand) was scratched from the lineup Thursday, April 24, after testing his sore left hand with early swings in the batting cage. Gillaspie doesn't think he's dealing with anything worse than a bruise, and rest is probably the best prescription for him right now. "This has been going on for a couple of weeks, gradually," Gillaspie said. "It would get jammed every other game or whatever and then for whatever reason the other night it just got jammed a couple of times on foul balls, and from then on it's been pretty tender."

FANTASY TIP: Gillaspie's injury isn't serious enough to land him on the DL, but there's no telling when he'll be back in the lineup. If you own him in an AL-only league, keep checking on his status daily.

White Sox | Adam Eaton likely to return Friday

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:52:25 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Adam Eaton (hamstring) missed his fifth straight game Thursday, April 24, with a mild strain in his left knee. Eaton is likely to return to the lineup Friday, April 25. Manager Robin Ventura said Eaton is looking much better.

FANTASY TIP: Check back tomorrow evening before inserting Eaton back into your lineup. If he's starting, he should be starting for your squad, too.

Indians | John Axford off to good start

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:50:04 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP John Axford leads the American League in saves with eight and has a 2.79 ERA through 11 outings. He's held hitters to a .176 average with nine strikeouts and seven walks in 9 2/3 innings.

Indians | Justin Masterson trying to build arm strength

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:43:38 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Justin Masterson is increasing the volume of his four-seam fastballs during bullpen sessions in order to try and increase his arm strength and gain back some velocity on his pitches. "I think right now, he just can't find that four-seam velocity that he had last year," pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. "I wouldn't say he's reinventing himself. I think he's playing the cards that he's dealt right now. We're working towards finding the four-seam velocity again and he's been working hard." Masterson's average fastball velocity is down a few mph this season, as well as his slider. Regardless, he's struck out 15 and walked four for a 2.84 ERA in 12 2/3 innings in his last two outings.

FANTASY TIP: Some mechanical adjustments Masterson has made probably have something to do with his drop in velocity. It's still early in the year, so this trend isn't too alarming just yet, especially since he's having positive results.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore, Jonny Gomes could platoon

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:37:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said he can envision a platoon between OFs Grady Sizemore and Jonny Gomes in left field.

FANTASY TIP: This shouldn't come as a surprise. Sizemore has cooled off since an initial hot start, and the Red Sox would like to keep the oft-injured Sizemore fresh through the long haul. It'll drop his value significantly in mixed leagues .

Mets | Kyle Farnsworth still the closer

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:32:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Kyle Farnsworth is the team's primary closer on days that he's available to pitch.

FANTASY TIP: After Daisuke Matsuzaka recorded the save Thursday, it now appears that he's the primary backup option to Farnsworth, should he struggle or get injured. Pick up Matsuzaka if you're in need of saves.

Blue Jays | Dustin McGowan to make next start

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:27:48 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Dustin McGowan will make his next start, according to manager John Gibbons.

FANTASY TIP: McGowan's rough start makes him a candidate to be bumped from the rotation. Look for better options in mixed leagues. The Jays could go with a six-man rotation eventually if McGowan doesn't turn things around.

NFL | Multiple teams have interviewed Connor Shaw

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:27:46 -0700

South Carolina QB Connor Shaw has interviewed with the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Dolphins | Interested in Connor Shaw

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:25:58 -0700

The Miami Dolphins have displayed a lot of interest in South Carolina QB Connor Shaw.

Yankees | Ivan Nova to have TJS

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:25:51 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, April 29. Doctor James Andrews will perform the procedure.

FANTASY TIP: You can now cut bait on Nova in all formats.

Yankees | Roster moves

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:22:48 -0700

The New York Yankees recalled RPs Bruce Billings and Shane Greene from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday, April 24, and optioned 2B Dean Anna and RP Preston Claiborne to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in corresponding moves. Also, SP Ivan Nova (elbow) was moved to the 60-day DL.

Mets | Kyle Farnsworth being assessed

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:15:54 -0700

New York Mets RP Kyle Farnsworth will continue to close games for the team while manager Terry Collins assesses him and internal options such as RP Daisuke Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka faced just a single hitter in his outing Wednesday, April 24. "I wouldn't say I've enjoyed my time out of the bullpen," Matsuzaka said. "I'm still trying to figure things out by seeing how the game progresses and seeing where I might be called upon. I just have too much on my plate right now to enjoy the process right now."

FANTASY TIP: Dice-K notched the save Thursday afternoon. Farnsie had worked in three of the last four days, however, so the Mets may have wanted to give him a break. Regardless, Matsuzaka is now in the saves picture in Flushing. Grab him immediately if you're chasing saves. It could become a closer-by-committee or Matsuzaka could usurp Farnsworth eventually.

Mets | To keep Bobby Abreu fresh

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 13:11:00 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins plans to give OF Bobby Abreu around one outfield start per week to keep his bat fresh. Abreu started in the outfield for the first time in two years Thursday, April 24, to give OF Curtis Granderson a rest. Abreu hit .395 with a 1.086 OPS in 15 games with Triple-A Las Vegas.

FANTASY TIP: Abreu is strictly an NL-only commodity because his playing time will be sparse.
