Kansas City Royals RP Luke Hochevar (elbow) will need to have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, and he'll miss all of the 2014 season. Subsequent tests showed that Hochevar's ulnar collateral ligament may be as much as 65 percent torn. He had suffered a 20 to 45 percent tear in his UCL in 2010 and avoided the surgery. Manager Ned Yost said the surgery is expected to take place in the next two weeks. General manager Dayton Moore said the team will likely fill the bullpen void from within.

Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth plans to be aggressive on the base paths this year, and manager Matt Williams' style of managing should lend nicely to that. Werth said his offensive ideology is "in line" with Williams'. The Nationals coaching staff is letting the players make their own reads and giving the veterans green lights to decide when to run. "That's the only way to steal bases," Werth said. "That's how base stealers steal bases. That's how guys become great base stealers. You don't become a good base stealer by getting steal signs and stealing. That's when you get thrown out. Those philosophies are right now. I'm really happy about that."
FANTASY TIP: Werth should be a lock to hit 20 home runs, depending on health. Along with increased opportunities to steal bags, despite some loss in speed due to age, Werth looks much more attractive. Don't rule out double-digit stolen bases with Williams at the helm.

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed QB Chad Henne to an undisclosed two-year deal Friday, March 7.
FANTASY TIP: This won't preclude the Jags from drafting a quarterback with their third overall pick in this year's draft or searching for a capable QB to compete with Henne in free agency, but it makes that need less pressing. Henne returning likely means Blaine Gabbert is done in Jacksonville, however.

The New York Jets are not close to a long-term deal for DE Muhammad Wilkerson, according to a team source. The team plans to exercise his fifth-year option before the May 3 deadline, the source said. The Jets could revisit a contract extension this summer, but it's unlikely that they'll consider a long-term deal this offseason unless Wilkerson accepts a team-friendly contract. He'll earn $1.2 million in 2014, and he's in line for $5.25 million to $6 million under his 2015 team option.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith didn't clarify his future with the team after meeting with general manager Dave Gettleman earlier this week. "Here's all I have to say about it," the team's all-time leading receiver said. "I am working out and doing all the things as I am a Carolina Panther. That's where I am. And I'll continue to move forward until I am told otherwise." Smith wouldn't elaborate when asked if he could be playing for another team in 2014.
