Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo could land on DL

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 16:03:18 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (ankle) is not in the starting lineup, as expected, Tuesday, April 22. He's dealing with a sprained left ankle and could land on the disabled list. Choo said he still has pain in his ankle.

FANTASY TIP: Michael Choice, the only other outfielder on the team's 40-man roster, is starting in place of Choo. Choice would become a popular addition in AL leagues if Choo lands on the DL. Stay tuned.

Chiefs | Staff treating Dwayne Bowe like an adult

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:58:07 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid are treating WR Dwayne Bowe like an adult by allowing him to work hard while expressing himself. Reid has shown a willingness to trust Bowe's on-field observations and adjust Reid's play calling accordingly.

Yankees | Vidal Nuno to be fifth starter

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:57:33 -0700

New York Yankees SP Vidal Nuno will serve as the team's fifth starter, and his next start will come against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 26.

FANTASY TIP: Add Nuno immediately in AL-only leagues if you're struggling for pitching and innings.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma throws sim game

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:52:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) threw a 58-pitch simulated game Tuesday, April 22, and felt better than his last session. He'll next throw 75 pitches for Triple-A Tacoma Sunday, April 27, and he could rejoin the rotation after that.

FANTASY TIP: As you can see, Iwakuma's arm strength is almost ready for a big lead load. He could be back in the majors as soon as next weekend if everything goes according to plan. Iwakuma should already be owned in all leagues.

Cardinals | Straight platoon at 2B?

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:49:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong has been struggling of late, and 2B Mark Ellis has capitalized with more playing time; he made his third start in four games Monday, April 21. Manager Mike Matheny said Ellis' start against a righty Monday was "a great example" of how the team intends to use him - as a right-handed complement to Wong. Wong's average is down from .280 to .237, and he has four strikeouts in eight games. He said he's been "out of synch and rushing" lately.

FANTASY TIP: Matheny is choosing to ride the sure thing in Ellis over a struggling Wong. Wong owners in mixed leagues need to take note. Until Wong can regain the confidence in his swing and of his skipper, he's primarily an NL-only commodity.

Diamondbacks | Mark Trumbo has sore foot

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:44:51 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Mark Trumbo (foot) is out of the lineup with a sore left foot Tuesday, April 22, according to manager Kirk Gibson.

FANTASY TIP: Trumbo's injury doesn't sound serious, so there's a good chance he's back in the lineup in the next few days.

Padres | Casey Kelly throwing in games

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:42:33 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly (elbow) tossed three innings in extended spring training Tuesday, April 22, and he'll take part in one more game before the team decides to send him on a rehab assignment.

FANTASY TIP: Kelley could become a realistic option for NL-only managers in the second half of the season. However, expect the Friars to be very careful with his comeback.

Cardinals | Jon Jay to see more time

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:41:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay has taken over the platoon situation in center field over OF Peter Bourjos, and manager Mike Matheny plans on riding Jay's hot stick. "We're getting the guys in there who are taking good at-bats. Jon Jay has been taking some good at-bats," Matheny said. "Allen Craig has turned the corner and right now looks good in that second hole. Peter Bourjos is going to get good opportunities against a left-hander tomorrow. But right now Jon is taking the kind of at-bats we've got to capitalize on. We've got to get something going. Any guy in that lineup has potential to get us going." Jay is batting sixth Tuesday, April 22.

FANTASY TIP: If you own Bourjos in a mixed league, now is the time to start looking elsewhere, as long as Jay remains hot and in the good graces of the skipper.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe focused on winning

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:34:48 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe is focused more on working hard with his teammates and winning than individual statistics entering the 2014 season. Bowe also hired a personal trainer and nutritionist.

FANTASY TIP: Bowe has the potential to be a solid value pick in later rounds because of the volume of targets he'll receive. The upside may be limited, but the floor is borderline starter territory, especially in PPR formats, where he is a third fantasy option. Bowe bounced back from his previous career-worst season with his best in 2010.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks could return this weekend

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:29:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (calf) will play for Triple-A Pawtucket Wednesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 24, before possibly being activated from the disabled list this weekend. Middlebrooks went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first rehab game Monday, April 21.

FANTASY TIP: Middlebrooks will immediately return as the starting third baseman. Brock Holt is expected to be sent back to the minors when Middlebrooks returns.

Nationals | Drew Storen being rewarded for success

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:24:45 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams is considering using RP Drew Storen in the eighth inning. Storen has retired 22 of 24 batters he's faced so far this year, with nine strikeouts and no walks. "I expect Drew to be ready to pitch at any point," Williams said. "He can pitch the seventh. He can pitch the eighth. He can close if need be. He's done it before and had success doing all three. Does it change roles? I think that's yet to be determined. We'll see how that all plays out. But he's capable, sure."

FANTASY TIP: Because of Storen's hot start and Tyler Clippard's poor performance early on, Storen should be considered the primary setup man to Rafael Soriano at this point. Add Storen in deep mixed leagues if you are looking to improve your counting pitching stats or if you want a handcuff to Soriano.

Nationals | Have trust in Aaron Barrett

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:24:23 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams has trust in using RP Aaron Barrett in high-leverage situations late in ballgames. Barrett had retired 13 of the 16 batters he faced before being sent down April 12. Barrett could also see more late-game situations with RP Tyler Clippard struggling.

Mets | Juan Lagares running

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:19:52 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (hamstring) has started to run. He's eligible to return to the disabled list April 30.

Mets | Could move Lucas Duda to cleanup

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:17:50 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said he is considering moving 1B Lucas Duda to the cleanup spot in the batting order. "We've put a lot on Lucas' plate in the past week," Collins said about the reluctance to use Duda as a cleanup hitter now. "I don't want to pile on."

Chiefs | Kyle Williams re-signed to one-year contract

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:16:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs has re-signed WR Kyle Williams to a one-year contract. The financial terms remain undisclosed.

Brewers | Johnny Hellweg has torn UCL

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:15:39 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Johnny Hellweg (elbow) is dealing with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll likely need Tommy John surgery that will end his year. He'll receive a second opinion next week from Dr. James Andrews. Hellweg was 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Nashville this year.

Nationals | Adam LaRoche out with injury

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:12:48 -0700

Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (quadriceps) is sitting out with a sore quadriceps Tuesday, April 22. He was hit by a pitch there recently, but the injury isn't serious. 1B Tyler Moore is starting in his place. The Nats are also facing a left-hander Tuesday.

FANTASY TIP: Check back tomorrow to see if LaRoche is back in the lineup.

Angels | Ernesto Frieri missing with heater

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:06:27 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri is making mistakes with his fastball, and he's being punished for it with home runs this year, according to manager Mike Scioscia. "I think it's pretty clear with Ernie that the balls that have been hit out of the park have been mistakes," Scioscia said. "It's not like he's making good pitches and they're hitting mistakes." Frieri has allowed four home runs in 8 1/3 innings this year.

FANTASY TIP: Frieri doesn't appear to be in any danger of losing the closing gig, but if he continues to make mistakes with his fastball, things won't be pretty. Joe Smith is the next in lane for save opportunities.

Mariners | Taijuan Walker to see doctor

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:00:39 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) is visiting with a doctor Tuesday, April 22, and he'll resume his throwing program if he's cleared.

FANTASY TIP: Even if Walker is cleared to throw again, it'll be at least a month until we see him in the M's starting rotation. He's worth stashing in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.
