Rangers | Jerome Williams starting Friday

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:28:28 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Jerome Williams will start Friday, July 25, against the Oakland Athletics.

FANTASY TIP: Avoid Williams in all formats against the Athletics.

Indians | No Asdrubal Cabrera again

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:24:57 -0700

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera (back) is not in the lineup Thursday, July 24. INF Jose Ramirez is starting in his place, batting ninth.

FANTASY TIP: Cabrera could be looking at a disabled list stint if this persists. Ramirez is nothing more than AL-only filler.

White Sox | Zach Putnam to DL

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:18:21 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Zach Putnam (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list Thursday, July 24, with right shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, RP Andre Rienzo was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

FANTASY TIP: Putnam was getting looks in the ninth inning, so with him out of the committee, Jake Petricka should see more opportunities. Javy Guerra and Daniel Webb could also get an occasional chance. Matt Lindstrom should take over closing duties, when he returns from his ankle injury. However, Perticka is an immediate add, with Guerra and Webb more speculative additions, for those chasing saves.

Phillies | Cole Hamel tosses a gem

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:07:36 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels pitched eight innings, allowing an earned run on six hits and a walk, while striking out 10 batters, to earn his fifth win Thursday, July 24.

FANTASY TIP: It was business as usual for Hamels, who now sports a measly 2.72 ERA. Fantasy owners would love to see an uptick in wins, which could happen if he is moved to a superior team.

Mariners | Kendrys Morales to report Friday

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:07:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Kendrys Morales is expected to join his new team Friday, July 25. He was acquired from the Minnesota Twins Thursday, July 24.

FANTASY TIP: It's a reminder for those with daily transactions.

Mariners | Chris Taylor probably coming up

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 13:02:36 -0700

The Seattle Mariners are poised to call up SS Chris Taylor from Class AAA Tacoma. He's batting .328 with 5 home runs and 37 RBIs in 75 contests. He may be up with the club as soon as Thursday, July 24.

FANTASY TIP: Taylor is an immediate add in AL-only games and could enter deep-mixed conversations if he proves himself worthy. Brad Miller has done little to offer resistance to losing his job. Taylor has displayed some power and notable speed at each farm stop.

Phillies | Jonathan Papelbon bounces back

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:53:49 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon struck out a batter and threw 10 pitches to earn save No. 24 Thursday, July 24.

FANTASY TIP: It is good news for Papelbon owners, after he blew a save Tuesday and took the loss Wednesday. Despite his recent struggles, Papelbon's job is safe. Papelbon's name has been involved in trade talks, so joining a new team could alter his value significantly.

Red Sox | David Ortiz update

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:48:49 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (back) felt back spasms when he checked a swing Thursday, July 24. Ortiz was examined after the game.

FANTASY TIP: An initial diagnosis could paint a clearer picture, but for now, consider Ortiz day-to-day.

Marlins | Jordany Valdespin hitting second

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:40:04 -0700

Miami Marlins 2B Jordany Valdespin is hitting second Thursday, July 24, against the Atlanta Braves.

FANTASY TIP: Valdespin could have some fleeting value in NL-only leagues. He boasts a power-speed combo, but he also has a career .220/.271/.377 slash line in the majors, so keep your expectations in check. He is definitely in play in daily games today, due to his low price and position in the lineup.

Mets | Recall Wilmer Flores

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:39:04 -0700

The New York Mets recalled SS Wilmer Flores from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis in his place.

FANTASY TIP: Flores and his power could see deep-mixed value with regular playing time, but the flaws in his plate discipline will suppress his upside.

Red Sox | David Ortiz leaves game

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:32:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (undisclosed) left the game early Thursday, July 24, after checking a swing. Ortiz appeared to place his hand on his back.

FANTASY TIP: The game was well out of hand, so his exit could be mainly precautionary. With David Price starting against the Red Sox tomorrow, Ortiz could receive an additional rest day. Check back for updates.

Tigers | GM talks trade interests

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:28:29 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said acquiring a shortstop and a left-handing-hitting outfielder are not high on the team's priority list Thursday, July 24.

FANTASY TIP: Consider this an endorsement for J.D. Martinez and Eugenio Suarez. Martinez has hit his way into being a viable mixed league option. Suarez is a fringe AL-only starter, at best.

Braves | No Andrelton Simmons

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:09:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (undisclosed) is not the starting lineup Thursday, July 24, against the Miami Marlins. SS Ramiro Pena is playing shortstop and hitting eighth.

FANTASY TIP: Remove Simmons from any daily-transaction lineups. He has just three hits since the All-Star break, so it is likely a scheduled rest day to help him refocus.

Twins | Won't send money in Kendrys Morales deal

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:01:33 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Minnesota Twins are not sending any money along with 1B Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners, according to a source with direct knowledge. Morales has approximately $4.33 million remaining on his one-year deal.

Twins | Recall Jorge Polanco

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:59:01 -0700

Minnesota Twins SS Jorge Polanco was recalled from Single-A Fort Myers Thursday, July 24.

Blue Jays | Marcus Stroman loses no-no bid

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:46:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman threw a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before it was broken up on a single by Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino. He made it through seven innings, giving up that lone hit with two walks while striking out seven.

FANTASY TIP: Stroman has been a beast since moving to the rotation. His ERA on the season is now down to 3.21, and he'll surely be picked up in more mixed leagues after this showing.

Twins | Stephen Pryor to Rochester

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:45:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Twins RP Stephen Pryor will be sent to Triple-A Rochester, after he was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in the deal for 1B Kendrys Morales.

Twins | Trade Kendrys Morales

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:43:57 -0700

The Minnesota Twins traded 1B Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners for RP Stephen Pryor.

FANTASY TIP: Pryor is merely organizational depth but could work his way into late-innings relief later this year or in 2015.

Mariners | Acquire Kendrys Morales

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:42:25 -0700

The Seattle Mariners have acquired 1B Kendrys Morales from the Minnesota Twins for RP Stephen Pryor.

FANTASY TIP: Not a fantastic upgrade in hitting environment, but it's a familiar home park. This doesn't change Morales' value much sans the fact he may be more comfortable and recapture some of his once top-shelf pop. Pick him up if you're desperate for deep-league help, but carry on otherwise.

Athletics | Alberto Callaspo rehab starting soon

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:39:33 -0700

Oakland Athletics INF Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) is expected to start his rehab assignment Saturday, July 26, and may return to the majors Sunday, July 27.

FANTASY TIP: Callaspo probably will resume most of the keystone duties, but he's still chiefly an AL-only piece.
