Thu, 17 Apr 2014 13:08:26 -0700

The New York Mets attended a showcase by free-agent RP Joel Hanrahan (Red Sox) Thursday, April 17.

FANTASY TIP: The Mets are sticking with Jose Valverde in the closer role, but they don't have many options behind him in case he implodes. Don't forget about Hanrahan, who seems likely to sign with a team if he's fully healthy.

Braves | Jason Heyward in a rut

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:56:39 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward is 5-for-51 with two extra-base hits and three RBIs in his last 13 games.

FANTASY TIP: If you have other outfield options in a mixed leagues, now would be a good time to sit Heyward on your fake pine until he shows signs of coming out of this funk.

Indians | Zach McAllister's fastball key

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:54:13 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Zach McAllister lives and dies by his fastball, and part of his success in his outing Wednesday, April 16, was his ability to effectively locate his high fastball when needed. He has a 2.04 ERA through three starts this year, and he's only given up one run while striking out 11 and walking two in 13 2/3 frames in his last two outings.

Indians | John Axford working on control

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:49:41 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP John Axford, who has five saves in six chances this year, has been working to lower his high walk rate; through eight games and 6 2/3 innings this year, he has six walks. "It's really just a matter of making sure I attack the hitters," Axford said, "and do that a little more aggressively than what I have been. That still remains a focus of mine when I go out there. I just have to make sure I accomplish it."

FANTASY TIP: Axford's success this year in the closer role will either live or die by how well he controls all of his pitches. He's been a slow starter in his career, but it's concerning to see him walking this many out of the gates. If this trend continues, he could be in line for some shaky outings.

Indians | Michael Bourn feels good

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:45:17 -0700

Cleveland Indians OF Michael Bourn went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in his return from the disabled list Wednesday, April 16, and he was able to test his hamstring in the outfield. "It felt great," Bourn said. "It's always great to get back out there and play with your teammates, man. That's the thing I've been waiting on for the last two, two and a half weeks. The conditions (Wednesday) ... I chose a good one to come back, when it was almost 20 degrees out there. It felt like it with that wind blowing a little bit. Hey, I was just happy to be out there and be a part of the team."

FANTASY TIP: Bourn will likely be rested more often than normal as he works his way back, however. Continue to check if he's in the starting lineup before automatically assuming he should be in your starting lineup.

Blue Jays | Adam Lind hoping to avoid DL

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:36:57 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping 1B Adam Lind (back) can avoid a trip to the disabled list, but he hasn't looked much better two days after suffering a lower back injury, and he has been walking around gingerly. The team will wait at least another day before making a decision. 1Bs Dan Johnson or Juan Francisco would be promoted from Triple-A Buffalo if Lind is put on the shelf, and the designated hitter would turn into a platoon with the likes of C Dioner Navarro and OF Colby Rasmus.

FANTASY TIP: Both Johnson and Francisco are intriguing for AL-only managers for their power, but Francisco is younger and has more upside.

Mariners | Stephen Pryor activated, optioned

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:34:59 -0700

The Seattle Mariners activated RP Stephen Pryor (lat) from the disabled list Thursday, April 17, and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley (biceps) remains out of the lineup Thursday, April 17, with a sore right biceps. 2B Alexi Amarista is starting at third base again.

FANTASY TIP: Amarista will be the main beneficiary at third base if Headley needs to go on the disabled list. Yonder Alonso has been taking grounders at the hot corner, too.

Giants | Being cautious with Angel Pagan

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:30:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (knee) is sitting out as a precaution Thursday, April 17, due to some knee soreness after hitting the outfield wall a few days ago.

FANTASY TIP: Pagan could be back in the lineup as early as tomorrow night. Check the starting lineups before inserting him into yours.

Giants | Brandon Crawford remains out

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:14:52 -0700

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:09:10 -0700

Dodgers | Hanley Ramirez expects to return Friday

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 11:28:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez (hand) said he expects to be back in the lineup Friday, April 18.

FANTASY TIP: Ramirez's injury looked bad last night, but he appears to have dodged a bullet. Check back tomorrow before returning him to your fake starting lineup.

Rangers | Neal Cotts fine

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 11:27:25 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Neal Cotts is not physically injured, but manager Ron Washington elected not to use him in a close game Wednesday, April 16, because Washington said the team has been "riding" Cotts hard recently, and they wanted to give him a breather.

Indians | Asdrubal Cabrera struggling with approach

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 11:04:53 -0700

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera has always been a free swinger in his career, and he admits that the first pitch is often the best pitch to take advantage of with opposing pitchers trying to get ahead. However, Cabrera is batting only .188 with a .111 average through nine at-bats that end on the first pitch this year. However, manager Terry Francona said the team will not ask Cabrera to alter his approach at the plate.

FANTASY TIP: It's a small sample size so far this season, so don't blow it too far out of proportion. Expect his average on balls put in play on the first pitch to progress more toward his career numbers as the season progresses.

Indians | Hoping to keep Ryan Raburn in lineup

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 11:02:04 -0700

Cleveland Indians OF Ryan Raburn was receiving plenty of playing time when OF Michael Bourn (hamstring) was on the disabled list. Now that Bourn is back, manager Terry Francona will try to find ways to keep Raburn in the lineup consistently. "Early on, I don't think Bourny is probably going to play 10 in a row," Francona said. "Raburn is going to get a lot of at-bats. Whether it's left field, right field, maybe even a game at first, he's going to get a lot of at-bats."

FANTASY TIP: Raburn should be owned in all AL-only leagues, even with Bourn back. Raburn can serve as the designated hitter while also platooning in the outfield with David Murphy.

Indians | David Murphy hot

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 10:46:44 -0700
