Astros | Probably will keep Chad Qualls

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:58:50 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls probably won't be traded, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow. "I hesitate to use the word 'untouchable,' but he likes it here, he's comfortable here and he's pitching well," Luhnow said.

FANTASY TIP: Maybe he's a long-term investment for them, or they're waiting for the right deal and it hasn't come their way yet. Don't write off the possibility, but Qualls' owners have to like the increasing chances he remains in save chances during his big rebound season.

Orioles | Manny Machado out again

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:48:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (back) is out of the lineup again Thursday, July 24.

Mariners | Kendrys Morales' fit

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:47:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Kendrys Morales will serve as the team's designated hitter the majority of the time, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. McClendon noted 1Bs Logan Morrison and Corey Hart will platoon at first base.

FANTASY TIP: All three players have little value outside of AL-only formats, at this point. With Morales projecting to get the most playing time, he is the one to take a flier on in mixed leagues. Morales has 39 games under his belt, so he should be ready to return to the reliable production we saw the past two seasons.

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:44:45 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Avisail Garcia (shoulder) looked "pretty normal" in batting practice Thursday, July 24, according to manager Robin Ventura.

General Manager Jeff Luhnow expects Fowler to begin his rehab assignment sometime during the team's 10-game homestand, which beings Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: Fowler justifies his injury-prone label annually and hasn't begun any baseball activities yet. When healthy he is a valuable asset in all formats, so consider adding him before the pack.

Phillies | Trying to trade Ryan Howard

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:19:35 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies are working hard to trade 1B Ryan Howard and would be willing to swallow much or most of the remaining $70 million they owe him, according to rival executives.

FANTASY TIP: Howard's relationship with Philly management is becoming toxic, and a change of scenery could be a positive. Still, you know what you're getting with Howard: low BA, decent power and RBI potential. He could be much more useful in an AL environment.

Twins | Byron Buxton returns

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 15:03:32 -0700

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton (wrist) is leading off and playing center field Thursday, July 24, for Single-A Fort Myers. Buxton missed five games after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist Friday, July 18.

Twins | Kyle Gibson unlikely for Saturday

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 14:54:29 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Kyle Gibson (back) is unlikely to start Saturday, July 26, due to back stiffness. The Twins will have to recall a pitcher to start if Gibson is unable to go.

FANTASY TIP: Check back for an official announcement. Benching Gibson until he proves his health isn't out of the question.

White Sox | Matt Lindstrom update

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 14:44:42 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Matt Lindstrom (ankle) threw live batting practice Thursday, July 24. He expects to throw a simulated game before going on a rehab assignment. Lindstrom noted he felt good during fielding drills.

FANTASY TIP: Lindstrom is expected to return to the closer's role when he rejoins the team. He should be on your radar in all formats, and he is worth stashing now, if you can sacrifice the bench slot in the meantime.

Phillies | Cole Hamels upping velocity

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 14:41:51 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels hit 96.2 mph on the radar gun Thursday, July 24. It was the fastest he has thrown since 2010.

FANTASY TIP: Hamels missed the beginning of the season with a shoulder injury, so this is encouraging news for fantasy owners. He has allowed three earned runs or less in his last 10 outings, striking out 107 batters in 103 2/3 innings pitched, with a 2.43 ERA.

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 14:33:12 -0700
