Browns | Charles Johnson intriguing

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:22:15 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Charles X. Johnson is expected to get a chance to rise up the depth chart and challenge the older Miles Austin and Nate Burleson for snaps.

FANTASY TIP: The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder, who has battled knee injuries, was called "intriguing" by Tom Reed and is someone to watch during the year.

Browns | Josh Gordon hearing soon?

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:11:09 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's hearing on a possible suspension is expected to take place in the next 10 days, possibly two weeks, according to head coach Mike Pettine. They're also preparing for an appeal not long after. Pettine said the Browns aren't considering cutting Gordon yet.

FANTASY TIP: The waiting game continues. Hopefully, your draft doesn't take place until closer to the start of Week 1 so you'll have a sound idea of whether he's still worth a bench selection.

Browns | Starting QB will be named in preseason

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:06:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will know who is starting before the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine, though it could happen sooner. Pettine has expressed hesitation to name Manziel the starter immediately and thinks Hoyer's chances are underrated.

FANTASY TIP: It depends heavily on how Hoyer responds during his knee recovery. This could be a battle to watch during the season. Manziel is nothing more than a low-end QB2 and ideally ranks as a third slinger for 2014 fantasy football drafts. Hoyer could be a sneaky QB3 in such leagues that require that depth.

Browns | Johnny Manziel chatted with Mike Pettine

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:05:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel talked with head coach Mike Pettine, who expressed concerns about Manziel's off-field behavior. Pettine said it was a "positive conversation" and that he doesn't feel as if Manziel's purported party activities will be a problem once the NFL season starts.

FANTASY TIP: Hopefully, the Manziel news starts to trend toward the quarterback battle he'll have with Brian Hoyer.

Cowboys | Demarcus Lawrence expected to start

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:59:02 -0700

Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence is likely to win the starting job at right defensive end, according to Bryan Broaddus.

FANTASY TIP: Lawrence's upside was up for debate among NFL Draft scouts, and he'll have a tall task to replace DeMarcus Ware. But Lawrence is someone to watch during the season in sack-leaning IDP formats.

Bills | Marcell Dareus entering treatment

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:53:13 -0700

Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus has agreed to enter an NFL substance abuse program as he works to have felony drug charges dismissed, according to Rod Giddens, Dareus' attorney. Dareus was given permission to enter the program at a hearing in Calhoun County Court in Alabama Monday, July 21. Charges levied on May 5 of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia will be dismissed and perhaps expunged should he complete the required activities. The NFL could still discipline Dareus, however.

FANTASY TIP: The last sentence puts a damper on this news, which could negatively affect the Bills' defensive line, considered its strength on defense. In fantasy, they're a fringe starting DT with even more risk during any potential Dareus absence.

Saints | Je'Ron Hamm stood out

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:43:17 -0700

New Orleans Saints TE Je'Ron Hamm stood out the most of the backup tight ends and fullbacks during organized team activities and minicamps because of his athletic ability and receiving skills.

Bills | Seantrel Henderson shaken up

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:39:25 -0700

Buffalo Bills OT Seantrel Henderson (undisclosed) was walking off the field slowly with trainers Tuesday, July 22. He left practice Sunday, July 20, due to a hip injury, but it's not known if that is what ails him today.

Bills | Backup QBs alternating

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 07:32:37 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Jeff Tuel and Thaddeus Lewis are alternating series with the second unit in team drills Tuesday, July 22.

Bengals | George Iloka has firm grip on job

Angels | No innings limit on Garrett Richards

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 06:55:15 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have no plans to shut down SP Garrett Richards after a specific innings limit. "Not at all," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday. "Garrett has thrown from end to end in a season. His innings have not escalated to the point where they're 200-plus, but Garrett throws the ball as easily as anybody you'll ever see. It's not a violent delivery, it's not a violent package. He maintains velocity pretty easily."

FANTASY TIP: This is good news for his owners as he remains a valuable starter for the rest of the season.

Indians | Jason Kipnis likely to be limited rest of season

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 06:53:29 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (oblique) is likely to be limited by an oblique injury for the rest of the season. Kipnis has adjusted his swing to adhere to the right oblique strain he suffered in April. "I'd use the word adjustment," Kipnis said. "As far as the oblique goes, it's going to be there all year. It's not going to go away until the offseason. What I can do is find a swing that works for me. I thought we may have found something coming out of Detroit. It was a step in the right direction and we're going to keep making adjustments day to day and pitch to pitch and see how it goes."

FANTASY TIP: Kipnis isn't hitting for much power and likely isn't going to the rest of the season. However, he was 5-for-15 with two homers and six RBIs in the recent series with Detroit. He's still worth owning in all formats, but he may be a player you sit during cold spells.

Giants | David Tyree hired

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 06:39:05 -0700

The New York Giants named former WR David Tyree their director of player development.

Bills | Sammy Watkins running with ones

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 06:35:33 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins is running exclusively with the first-team offense in practice.

FANTASY TIP: Watkins has impressed early on in camp, and the hype is starting to build. Be careful not to overvalue him as more than a WR4 with upside in your drafts.

Bills | Marcell Dareus due back today

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 06:26:43 -0700

Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus is expected to return to the team Tuesday, July 22, after his flight was delayed the previous day.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 05:43:23 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Roenis Elias (forearm) left the game with left forearm cramps Monday, July 21. Manager Lloyd McClendon said it shouldn't be a lingering issue.

Orioles | Adam Jones launches two

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 05:41:43 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones hit two two-run homers Monday, July 21.

Tigers | Justin Verlander makes adjustment

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 05:37:01 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander looked at some pictures from earlier in his career and from this season to see if he was changing the grip on the baseball before his start Monday, July 21. He noticed a difference in his arm action and immediately made an adjustment while warming up. He allowed three runs and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It felt like I was able to throw the way I want," Verlander said. "Really, (today was) the first time all year that I've been able to locate my fastball as well as I would like to."

FANTASY TIP: This could be good news moving forward.
