Wed, 23 Apr 2014 05:41:39 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Albert Pujols hit his 500th career home run Tuesday, April 22. It was his second home run of the game, and he drove in five runs. Pujols is the third-youngest player to reach the milestone.

FANTASY TIP: He has hit eight homers in his last 13 games. His swing looks better than it has in two years. He's no longer cheating to make up for an injured base trying to catch up to fastballs.

Cleveland Indians C Yan Gomes has made six errors in 18 games after committing three in 85 games last year.

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 05:23:53 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Danny Salazar failed to pitch five innings for the third straight start in his loss to the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, April 22. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning six. Salazar said after the game that he thinks he may be tipping his pitches.

FANTASY TIP: Salazar better get it figured out, quickly. His 7.85 ERA and 1.96 WHIP negate his 26 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 20:54:50 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Dioner Navarro was out of the starting lineup for the third straight game Tuesday, April 22, against the Baltimore Orioles. C Josh Thole works as the personal catch for SP R.A. Dickey, who started Tuesday, and he has been hitting well. "Thole is swinging," manager John Gibbons said. "I could tell (Navarro) was starting to slow down a bit. It helps us keep (him) fresh over the whole season, and he'll be available on the bench if we need him."

Rangers | Robinson Chirinos set to start entire series

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:04:13 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington will use C Robinson Chirinos for all three games behind the plate this week against the Oakland Athletics, with C J.P. Arencibia starting none. Chirinos started Monday, April 21, is starting Tuesday, April 22, and is likely for Wednesday, April 23. Washington wants to pair Chirinos with SP Martin Perez, as the two are friends and former teammates in Venezuela. Perez is scheduled to start Wednesday.

FANTASY TIP: Chirinos is worth using as a No. 2 catcher in AL-only fantasy leagues and some deeper mixed formats, while Arencibia is only worth keeping rostered in the deepest of AL play.

Pirates | Neil Walker producing late heroics

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:03:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker had a 10th-inning walk-off home run on opening day, and he had a tie-breaking single in the ninth inning Monday, April 21. He is the first Pirates player in the past 40 seasons to have two walk-off hits in one April.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano as chilly as weather

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:02:49 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano is 5-17 with a 5.84 ERA in the month of April during his career, and he attributes the cold weather to his traditionally slow starts. "Yeah, Aprils have been difficult for me," Liriano said Tuesday, April 22. "It's just the cold. My speed usually isn't there until it gets warmer and I feel looser. And I don't have a good feel for the ball on breaking balls."

There is something to that, as he has a 7-12 record with a 5.48 ERA in September when the weather turns cool, but a 57-36 mark from May 1 through August 31 in his career, with the highest ERA of any month at 4.04 during that span.

FANTASY TIP: Based on those career numbers, fantasy owners would be wise to try and buy low on Liriano. The weather is about to heat up in the Steel City, and trends show that Liriano is about to heat up as well.

Pirates | Wandy Rodriguez's timetable uncertain

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:02:23 -0700

The length of absence for Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (knee) is unknown. He had fluid drained from his knee Monday, April 21, and he also had an MRI, but the results were not made known. It depends on the guy. We'll just have to wait and see."

Pirates | No starter yet for Thursday

SP Jeff Locke is not a candidate, as he pitched for Triple-A Indianapolis Monday, April 21. Ps Brandon Cumpton, Jeanmar Gomez and Stolmy Pimentel are believed to be the top candidates.

Mariners | More on Hisashi Iwakuma's sim game

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:01:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) had his fastball clocked around 89-90 mph during his four-inning simulated game Tuesday, April 22. That is considered a tick or two slower than usual. Iwakuma is still building arm strength. The team gave him a variety of looks in the sim game, making him field bunts, cover first base, throw pickoff moves to first and face batters. "I was able to focus like a regular game," Iwakuma said. "I felt a lot better. My feel for the game is coming back gradually. I felt a lot better than the last time when we did a sim game in Miami."
