San Francisco Giants 1B Michael Morse (foot) is not in the starting lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, June 1. He suffered an injury to his left foot after fouling a ball off during the game Saturday, May 31. INF Joaquin Arias is batting eighth and playing first base Sunday.

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt (hand) was taken out of the game Friday, May 9, after being hit by a pitch on his left hand, apparently his left thumb. Joaquin Arias took his place.
Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for updates. Any HBP on the hand opens up the possibility for a potentially costly injury.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy said SS Brandon Crawford will sit against some left-handed pitchers, with 2B Joaquin Arias serving as the shortstop during those games, and SS Brandon Hicks working at second base. "I need to hit better against left-handed pitchers. I know that," Crawford said Monday, March 31. "I'm going to go out there and do my best, and hopefully I have good at-bats. I know (Bochy) is trying to put the best lineup on the field. I want to be part of the best lineup."
Crawford worked with spring instructor Barry Bonds during the spring, and credits Bonds with helping him to keep his front shoulder closed, which allows him to see breaking pitches longer and outside fastballs better.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy said 2B Joaquin Arias will see most of the playing time at second base while 2B Marco Scutaro (back) is out of the lineup.

San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) said his back pain is not debilitating, but it's bad enough to keep him from playing every day. He underwent a test Tuesday, March 25, that tried to isolate which nerve is causing him pain, with the aim of deadening the nerve. Scutaro also received another cortisone injection in the lower part of his back.
Fantasy Tip: The good news is Scutaro isn't considering surgical options at this point, but if he doesn't recover when his DL stint is up to open the season, he could go down that road. Expect Joaquin Arias to start at second base to open the season.

San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) underwent a nerve-block procedure Tuesday, March 25, and will begin the season on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Joaquin Arias will likely start the year as the team's starting second baseman with Scutaro out, but don't sleep on Ehire Adrianza, who impressed the coaching staff in camp. With Scutaro's age and worsening condition, it might be a long time before he's back in action.

San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) looked good swinging the bat Monday, March 24, and the team will wait to make a decision on whether he'll need to open the season on the disabled list. INFs Joaquin Arias, Ehire Adrianza and Brandon Hicks can fill in if Scutaro has to miss any time. "We've got to be pretty certain he's turned the corner," manager Bruce Bochy said. "There's too much to lose. We won't do that until we think he's ready and he could go deep into games and get some at-bats."
Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe to assume that Scutaro won't be ready at this rate. Arias is the likely candidate to see most of the at-bats in Scutaro's absence. Adrianza is a deep sleeper for NL-only leagues if Scutaro's back injury is more serious and requires surgery down the road.

San Francisco Giants 2B Ehire Adrianza has always been a sure-handed defensive infielder, but his bat has been slow to develop in the minors. He's a switch hitter competing for a roster spot this spring and has a career average of .248 in the minor leagues. Adrianza finished the 2013 season at Triple-A Fresno, hitting .310 in 45 games.
He's impressed this spring, and manager Bruce Bochy called him "the most impressive guy in camp so far." As of Wednesday, March 12, he was 5-for-19 (.263) with two home runs. "I've seen power; I've seen him drive the ball at times in the minor leagues, but just not consistently," assistant general manager Bobby Evans said. After those adjustments, Evans said, "he was hitting the ball hard – not soft line drives – and it showed in the box scores." Adrianza is competing with INFs Joaquin Arias, Nick Noonan and Brandon Hicks. Adrianza played almost exclusively at shortstop in the minors, but he's looked adequate at second base in camp.
Fantasy Tip: The Giants are bringing Marco Scutaro (back) along slowly, and there's a decent chance he begins on the DL. At his age, too, he'll likely need to be spelled frequently throughout the season. Adrianza is a real sleeper option in NL-only leagues.

San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (back) said his back is still "driving me crazy," and he's not where he wants to be heading into the season.
Fantasy Tip: It looks like there's a good chance Scutaro will be on the disabled list to start the season. His health deteriorated quickly in the second half last year, and remember, he's 38 now. In his stead, some combination of Joaquin Arias and Tony Abreu will likely split reps at the keystone. They should only return value in NL-only leagues as MI depth, however.
