Angels | Jered Weaver healthy, more effective

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 10:36:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver is one of the slowest-throwing pitchers in the league this year, but he has been dominating hitters with a fastball that tops out in the low- to mid-80s since returning from the disabled list. He has a 2.08 ERA with 15 strikeouts and two walks in 17 1/3 innings in his last three starts, and he credits his better results to better health. With his hip acting up earlier this year, he was unable to use his unusual delivery in which he throws across his body to trick hitters. A massage therapist worked to loosen up Weaver's muscles through exercises and stretching. Weaver's deception and command have returned now that he is looser and healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver's ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) low velocity will likely scare most off on FantasyScore, but if he continues to locate, he could continue to surprise and rack up more strikeouts. Still, he'll continue to be a risk/reward start, including for his matchup tonight against the Detroit Tigers.

Angels | Jered Weaver to start Sunday

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 11:07:42 -0700

Confirming a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) will be activated from the disabled list to pitch against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, Aug. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA through 15 starts. A decrease in velocity has led to him being more hittable this season than in years past and he is a very risky play in FantasyScore.

Angels | Jered Weaver could return Sunday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 16:30:39 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) could return from the disabled list and start against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, Aug. 9, as manager Mike Scioscia said there's "definitely a chance." Weaver is throwing a bullpen session Friday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will be taking the rotation spot vacated by C.J. Wilson (elbow). Weaver's reduced velocity has led to him being extremely hittable this year and a disappointment to his fantasy owners. We don't recommend starting him against the Baltimore Orioles in his first start back on FantasyScore.

Angels | Jered Weaver looking better

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 12:23:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) allowed four runs (1.93 ERA) in 9 1/3 innings in his two rehab starts in the minor leagues while striking out seven, walking four and giving up six hits. Manager Mike Scioscia said Weaver is in a much better place now and could return to the starting rotation early next week. Weaver said his hip felt fine and he's ready to return to the Angels.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($$5,000, 10.0% of cap) must first prove to fantasy owners that he can be effective in the majors leagues again before they'll trust him in any format. A diminished velocity and few strikeouts this year have made him a fantasy afterthought. You should definitely consider him a big risk in his first start back off the DL.

Angels | Jered Weaver could start next week

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 10:48:11 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) sounds like he is ready to come off the disabled list, although the Angels could wait to make sure after he throws a bullpen session Friday, Aug. 7. Weaver could start early next week.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has had a disappointing season mainly because of a drastic drop in velocity that has led to a career-low 4.6 strikeouts per nine innings. That probably won't change drastically to end the season, so you'll have to be very careful with him as a risky matchup play on FantasyScore. We don't recommend using him immediately in daily lineups if he faces the Chicago White Sox early next week.

Angels | Jered Weaver to make rehab start Tuesday

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 17:25:08 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) is scheduled to make at least one more rehab start for Class A Inland Empire Tuesday, Aug. 4. He is expected to throw 70-80 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) was 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA in 15 starts before landing on the disabled list with a left hip injury. His decreased velocity has made him more dependent on hitting his spots to keep hitters off balance and he will be a risky play in FantasyScore when he returns to action.

Angels | Jered Weaver close to returning

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 16:02:50 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) feels ready to go and said "he's not that far off" with his mechanics in his delivery. Weaver will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Aug. 1, and then decide when he will return from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: C.J. Wilson was put on the disabled list today by the Angels, so Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) figures to take his rotation spot as soon as next week. Weaver has been extremely disappointing for his fantasy owners this year, though, posting a 4.75 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and just 4.6 strikeouts per nine innings with decreased fastball velocity. He's unlikely to make drastic adjustments to turn things around in the dominance department, though, so he'll remain a shaky matchup play on FantasyScore.

Angels | Jered Weaver close to return

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 16:22:45 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) will throw four innings or 60 pitches in his rehab start Thursday, July 30, and it could be his last minor league outing before being activated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) won't suddenly come back and pitch with increased velocity, so he'll need to continue to hit his spots and keep hitters off balance to be effective. His return could signal the loss of a rotation spot for impressive youngster Andrew Heaney or Matt Shoemaker. Either way, Weaver is a risky starting pitching commodity in shallow mixed leagues and on FantasyScore.

Angels | Jered Weaver to make rehab start

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 14:40:22 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Inland Empire Thursday, July 30.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has not pitched since June 20 but appears to be working his way back. He probably will need to make several rehab starts before he returns, and owners may want to see him pitch in a game before consider him as an option on FantasyScore.

Angels | Jered Weaver not ready to return

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 21:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (hip) said Wednesday, July 22, that he isn't quite ready to come off the 15-day disabled list. He threw a 60-pitch simulated game Tuesday, July 21, but he might still need another sim game or a minor-league rehab stint before he returns. He will throw another bullpen session Thursday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver is apparently making slow progress, but with the starting staff pitching well since the All-Star break the team isn't in any rush to get Weaver back.
