Reds | Homer Bailey to resume throwing soon

Sat, 05 Dec 2015 12:08:57 -0800

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) is expected to resume throwing on flat ground in January and won't begin throwing off a mound until after spring training camp opens in February. He had been doing long toss from a distance of 180 feet before taking a break around Thanksgiving.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, is slated to resume pitching in the majors by May if all goes well. He should be available at a deep discount in fantasy baseball drafts next spring because of the injury.

Reds | Homer Bailey could return in May

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 11:09:13 -0800

Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty said SP Homer Bailey's (elbow) recovery from Tommy John surgery is going well but the team doesn't expect him to return to action until mid-May.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey underwent reconstructive elbow surgery last May and should be available at a deep injury discount in next season's fantasy baseball drafts.

Reds | Homer Bailey rehab update

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 17:47:50 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) threw what he believes is his fourth or fifth bullpen session Friday, Sept. 25. Afterward, he said that it "feels like nothing happened." Bailey is expected to return to his normal offseason conditioning schedule by December.

Fantasy Tip: This is promising news for Bailey, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May and is expected to return sometime during the 2016 season. As a result, he should come at a deep discount in fantasy drafts next year.

Reds | Homer Bailey has torn UCL

Fri, 01 May 2015 11:25:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery. He's expected to return during the 2016 season. Dr. Timothy Kremchek will perform the surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Drop Bailey in all single-year fantasy formats. Tony Cingrani may be the Reds' best bet for a long-term rotation spot to replace Bailey, and he could be useful if you're hurting for rotation arms in deep mixed or NL-only leagues.

Reds | Homer Bailey done for year

Fri, 01 May 2015 11:14:07 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season. He will return next year.

Fantasy Tip: You can now safely drop Bailey in all single-year formats, and he'll come at an extremely cheap injury discount in 2016 drafts. Michael Lorenzen ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) was unsuccessful in his major league debut filling in for Bailey this week, and he might not be the short-term solution for the rotation. Tony Cingrani has the most upside and may be the best long-term solution this year. If you're searching for rotation help in deep mixed leagues, he's worth a speculative add.

Reds | Homer Bailey to 60-day DL

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 07:21:26 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: The move likely means Bailey will miss most of the first half, if not longer. Stash him on the DL if you can, but dropping him altogether is an option.

Reds | Homer Bailey to opt for injections?

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 16:41:25 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) could have his sprained elbow ligament treated via platelet-rich injections, according to manager Bryan Price, Tuesday, April 28.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey was likely dropped in all leagues but this news isn't enough to warrant a roster add. Johnny Cueto is the only Reds' starter worth owning in mixed leagues, while Mike Leake and Anthony DeSclafani should be streamed for favorable matchups.

Reds | Surgery for Homer Bailey?

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 14:19:18 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) may need surgery on his pitching elbow, and the team is considering several options for treating his injured ligament in his right arm. Either way, Bailey will miss serious time recovering from his injury.

Fantasy Tip: If you aren't using Bailey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) in one of your DL slots, he's not worth taking up anymore roster space. Surgery would likely be a Tommy John procedure, which would end his year and make him unavailable for the start of the 2016 season.

Reds | Homer Bailey on the DL

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 15:38:08 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow ligament sprain Monday, April 27, and P Carlos Contreras was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move. The DL stint is retroactive to Friday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) pitched exactly 5 2/3 innings in both of his starts after starting the season late due elbow issues. His last start was more encouraging, as he gave up just two runs while walking one and striking out three. Now he has another setback that will test his owner's patience in shallow mixed leagues. Raisel Iglesias, who started in Cincy's rotation, might be the best candidate to replace Bailey in the Reds' rotation. He'll be a low-end starter at FantasyScore that is only worth consideration in the right matchups.

Reds | Homer Baily needs to build endurance

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 15:11:46 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey was physically fine in his second start against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 23, but manager Bryan Price said Bailey needs to build his endurance up. Bailey allowed seven hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) looked much better in his second start of the year, albeit against an injury-depleted Brewers lineup Thursday. It's still encouraging progress, though. However, you'd be smart to continue avoiding him at FantasyScore until he's up to speed.
