Ethan J. Skolnick, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports retired QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) said the reason he retired was because of his injured shoulder. Fiedler had a bad shoulder that required two surgeries from the initial injury he sustained in 2005. Fiedler said he tried rehabbing but he could only get his shoulder back to 80 percent, nothing beyond that.

The Associated Press reports former NFL QB Jay Fiedler (Buccaneers) made his pro beach volleyball debut Thursday, April 10, and lost in the first round of qualifying for the Miami Open. Fiedler and his partner, Marco Macau, were seeded 32nd. Fiedler retired from the NFL in 2006 after suffering a shoulder injury.

The team released Fiedler instead of placing him on the physically unable to perform list because once a player is placed on that list, he is unable to return for six weeks. Instead of waiting that long, Fiedler will now be able to return to the team sooner if his shoulder returns to playing form.

With the regular season near, Fiedler is frustrated with the pace of his progress. "Yeah, it's definitely frustrating being out here watching and not being able to participate. I'm a competitive guy. I want to be out there, I want to be running around, I want to be playing. Unfortunately, the arm's not allowing me to do that yet, but I'm doing what I can to make sure I can get back out on the field as soon as possible," said Fiedler.

Joanne Korth, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) continues to make progress in his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury, but does not have a target date to return to practice. Fiedler increased his throwing distance Saturday, Aug. 5, from short to intermediate. He is pleased not to have experienced any setbacks in his rehabilitation and said, "There's some soreness, but I work through it, get it warmed up pretty good every day."

David Dorsey, of Florida Today, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) did some light throwing to rookie WR Maurice Stovall Friday morning, July 28, during their first training camp workout. "It feels pretty good," Fiedler said of the shoulder. "I'm starting to make some throws. I'm throwing the ball downfield pretty good. It's always tough watching guys run around and not be in the middle of everything. I have to be smart about it and not push it too hard. I'll take it at the right pace." Fiedler is listed on the "physically unable to perform" list for now. Fiedler said even if he were ready to take snaps with his teammates, he wouldn't be as ready as he should be because he needs to learn the playbook.

Both men have acquired quite a bit of experience after that season together in 1995. "I'm sure he's done a lot of different things and gotten better as a coach, just as I've gotten better as a player since the last time we were together," said Fiedler. "It's an opportunity to work with him again and be in a versatile offense with a lot of options where the quarterback really has a lot of input into what goes on offensively. The more I'm able to handle, the more he's going to throw at me. I'm excited about that."

"We're just looking into his situation," said head coach Jon Gruden. "We said we were going to look into the quarterback position. We're going to continue to do that, at least as long as I'm here." Fiedler said he has had talks with three or four NFL teams, including the Buccaneers, and that interest in his services is picking up as he is proving himself healthy. "It's just a feeling-out process right now, coming in here," said Fiedler. "Obviously, with what happened with Luke (McCown) last week, there looking for another guy to come in and compete a little bit. My situation, I'm rehabbing right now and hoping to be ready to go once training camp gets started. John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports the New England Patriots may pursue a veteran backup quarterback, but one free agent they have yet to contact is QB Jay Fiedler (Jets). Fiedler dislocated his shoulder last season and is still recovering from surgery. He recently began throwing 25-30 yards. He has spoken to the New York Giants and two other teams about backup jobs, but has not heard from the Pats. "I've known Scott Pioli a long time," Fiedler's agent, Brian Levy, said. "If New England is interested, they'll get in touch. It wouldn't be a problem." Levy said Fiedler has long admired Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick. Feidler has resigned himself to being a No. 2 quarterback, according to Levy. Should the Patriots call, Levy believes Fiedler would be a good fit.
