Twins | Glen Perkins to undergo surgery

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 17:03:47 -0700

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum within the next week, according to general manager Terry Ryan. The 33-year-old left-hander will miss the remainder of the 2016 season due to "labral abnormalities" but could be ready for the 2017 season.

Fantasy Tip: Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad are the most likely candidates to receive save opportunities in the Minnesota bullpen for now, with Kintzler having a slight edge because he is right-handed. However, Abad has had a better season statistically and is more likely to be available on the waiver wire. Kevin Jepsen could also re-enter the mix to close games, although he struggled in the role after Perkins landed on the disabled list. Perkins can be safely dropped in redraft leagues but may be worth stashing in dynasty and keeper formats.

Twins | Glen Perkins' season over

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 11:31:06 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) will miss the rest of the season because of a torn labrum and rotator cuff problems that will likely require surgery, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Perkins' labrum is definitely torn, although it's unclear how severe the tear is, the source said. There's a chance he could be ready for the 2017 season.

Fantasy Tip: The Twins' closer situation just got even murkier. Brandon Kintzler recorded the team's last save June 8. However, he entered a 4-1 game in the eighth inning a few days later and allowed an earned run (three total) without recording an out. He and lefty Fernando Abad are the most likely bets for save chances. Abad has a 0.79 ERA and 22 K's in 22 2/3 innings. He would be the one to take a chance on for now. Kevin Jepsen could enter the mix again as he hasn't been scored upon in his last four outings. He hasn't been very good, either, but he has the most experience on the staff. Trevor May (back) is a long-term option if he can right the ship after a spectacular start and an equally impactful freefall.

Twins | Glen Perkins stops bullpen session

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 13:44:17 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) was not able to finish his bullpen session Friday, June 10, because of renewed soreness in his shoulder. Perkins is able to throw on flat ground but is having problems in the mound.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Perkins is still a long way away from returning, so owners should avoid him for the time being. Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad are candidate to close for the Twins and may be options in deeper leagues for owners looking for saves.

Twins | Glen Perkins looking for third opinion

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 11:33:08 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) will seek a third opinion about his strained left shoulder. According to general manager Terry Ryan, will not visit Dr. Timothy Krenchek this time.

Fantasy Tip: The 33-year-old Perkins has only pitched in two games this season and hasn't made an appearance since Aprll 10. Fantasy owners should continue to stash him because he will return to the ninth-inning role once he is activated from the disabled list. Manager Paul Molitor removed struggling RP Kevin Jepsen from the interim closer's role earlier this week and RPs Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad are expected to see most of the save opportunities for the immediate future, with Kintzler having a slight edge over Abad because he is right-handed.

Twins | Glen Perkins throws bullpen

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 14:59:32 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) threw his second bullpen session Tuesday, June 7, and said it went well, but not as good as his first bullpen. He'll throw another bullpen Friday, June 10, and he said he'd like to go on a rehab assignment after that.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if Perkins will immediately be put back in the closer's role, but either way, he should remain stashed in all fantasy leagues. Kevin Jepsen, who has been filling in in the ninth, has seven saves but also a 6.26 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. Trevor May remains a speculative stash in deeper leagues.

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 18:28:06 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) had a good bullpen session Saturday, June 4, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins' return date remains unclear, but with Kevin Jepsen struggling as the interim closer, Perkins could resume ninth inning duties immediately upon his return. He should be stashed in all formats.

Twins | Glen Perkins to have bullpen soon

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 15:15:32 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) should throw a bullpen "soon," according to manager Paul Molitor. He has worked long toss back out to 120 feet, the same distance as when he had his setback.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins had a setback in his recovery a couple weeks ago, so this is great news for his owners. Fortunately for the former All-Star, Kevin Jepsen hasn't been smooth since taking over the closer's role, as he's compiled a 5.91 ERA and 1.64 WHIP to go with six saves. Thus, Perkins should retake over closing duties shortly after his return, making him a quality stash candidate in most leagues.

Twins | Glen Perkins back on track

Mon, 30 May 2016 03:10:10 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) has resumed a throwing program following a setback earlier in his rehab.

Fantasy Tip: Kevin Jepsen continues to struggle filling in as the closer, so it makes sense to stash Perkins despite an unclear return date.

Twins | Glen Perkins moved to 60-day DL

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:45:50 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, May 25, in order to create room for RP Buddy Boshers on the 40-man roster.

Fantasy Tip: As a result of the move, Perkins will be ineligible to return from the disabled list before June 10. He will return to the closer's role for Minnesota once he is activated and deserves to be stashed in all seasonal leagues. In the interim, Kevin Jepsen will continue to see save opportunities. Boshers is a 28-year-old lefty who possesses little fantasy value in any format.

Twins | Glen Perkins won't throw Monday

Sun, 22 May 2016 08:43:40 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) will not throw his scheduled bullpen session Monday, May 23, after suffering a setback while playing long toss recently.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins will return to the ninth-inning role as soon as he is activated from the disabled list, so he should remain stashed in all fantasy formats. Kevin Jepsen will continue serving as Minnesota's interim closer, although he has been somewhat shaky recently, so Trevor May could see some save opportunities as well.
