Twins | Phil Hughes solid interleague option

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 22:22:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes will make his first career appearance against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, June 30. He is 9-4 with a 3.82 ERA in interleague play for his career.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300; or 10.6% of cap) has pitched well in interleague play, and he is working against a youngster. The Reds are 4-13 in their past 17 interleague games, making Hughes an intriguing mid-level FantasyScore play.

Twins | Phil Hughes earns victory

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 19:23:24 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (6-6) allowed one run on six hits over eight innings in a victory over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, June 24, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) has recorded quality starts in each of his last four outings and he has a solid walk-to-strikeout ratio. However, he has allowed 17 home runs already this year, which is one more than he allowed during the entire 2014 season.

Twins | Phil Hughes lacking velocity

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 07:51:20 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes struggled to touch 90 mph in his last start Sunday, June 14. Hughes' fastball averaged 92-93 mph in recent seasons. Hughes has tapered off his between-starts bullpen sessions in favor of more long-tossing. He also has talked with strength and conditioning coordinator Perry Castellano about doing extra running in an effort to keep his lower half strong. "He's very frustrated," said Twins pitching coach Neil Allen, who says Hughes is down 2 mph with his four-seam fastball. "He can't compete the way he'd like to compete, so he's a little discouraged right now."

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) has a 4.79 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and his 5.55 K/9 is the lowest of his career. He pitched markedly better in the second half last season, so there is hope for traditional leaguers. However, he's not an option to risk on FantasyScore right now.

Twins | Phil Hughes allowing homers

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 13:45:43 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes has allowed 15 home runs in 78 innings of work this season. Hughes allowed 16 homers in 210 innings in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is doing well for owners in leagues with ratio as a stat (eight walks, 48 strikeouts), but his 4-6 record and 4.81 ERA shows signs of concern. Still, he had a 3.52 ERA in the last week, so he is showing signs of a turnaround.

Twins | Phil Hughes set for Game 1

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 19:36:50 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes will make the start Wednesday, June 3, against the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of a doubleheader after having his start Monday, June 1, washed out.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes has been surprisingly effective against Boston lately, picking up a win in his only start this season. He is 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) with one complete since the start of the 2012 season against the Red Sox. He will be facing rookie Eduardo Rodriguez, so Hughes could be a steal at $5,300 (or 10.6% of cap) in FantasyScore.

Twins | Phil Hughes repeating 2014 breakout

Sun, 10 May 2015 06:56:17 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes has nearly identical numbers to his breakout 2014 season through his first seven starts in 2015. Hughes has 44 innings pitched, 32 strikeouts and four walks allowed but he has surrendered nine home runs, five more than he allowed at this time last season.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) has a 5.11 ERA thus far, but he has a much more respectable 3.87 xFIP. Season-long owners need to be patient as Hughes should start to bounce back shortly.

Twins | Phil Hughes to start Monday

Fri, 01 May 2015 14:34:41 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (hip) is good to go for his next start Monday, May 4, according to manager Paul Molitor.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) was in the midst of a fine start against the Detroit Tigers before his hip impingement knocked him out this week. The Oakland Athletics are a decent matchup for Hughes on Monday, but you may want to play it safe and avoid him at FantasyScore coming off a short outing.

Twins | Phil Hughes expects to make next start

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:47:23 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (hip) said his hip worsened as the game went on Wednesday, April 29, but he thinks it's a minor injury and hopes to make his next start.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) was coming off his best start of the year, giving up only two earned runs in eight innings against the Seattle Mariners last Friday, and he was pitching well today before leaving. He almost certainly won't match his outstanding 2014 season in which he went 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA, but Hughes can be useful in the right matchups at FantasyScore.

Twins | Phil Hughes injured

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 12:39:11 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (hip) left his start early Wednesday, April 29, because of a mild hip flexor strain.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) will be able to make his next start. Hughes has struggled at times this season, so owners on FantasyScore may want avoid him for the time being.

Twins | Phil Hughes on track

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 14:49:03 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (finger) reported no issues with his cracked fingernail on his right middle finger while playing catch Monday, April 20. He remains on track to face the Seattle Mariners Friday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) is off to a slow start in 2015 after a career year in 2014. He is 0-3 with a 5.30 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. The Mariners haven't exactly played very well to begin the season, either, but Hughes should be considered a low-end FantasyScore starter later this week.
