Twins | Phil Hughes done for the year

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 17:05:14 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shoulder) will have season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes was already likely to miss most of the rest of the season, and now it's official that he's done until 2017. He wasn't useable even in AL-only leagues with his 5.95 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 5.2 K/9 and should be left undrafted in mixed leagues in 2017.

Twins | Phil Hughes could return this season

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 13:37:37 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (knee) has a chance to return at some point in September if his fractured femur heals by mid-August, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes will miss at least the next few months and may not pitch again in 2016. Owners in all leagues should drop him even if here is a chance that he returns.

Twins | Phil Hughes to miss at least six weeks

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 10:15:58 -0700

Minnesota Twins P Phil Hughes (knee) is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks because of a fracture above his left knee. He sustained the injury after being hit by a line drive Thursday, June 9, and was spotted using crutches in the team clubhouse Saturday, June 11.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes was 1-7 with a 5.95 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 12 appearances (11 starts) this season and had recently been demoted to the bullpen. He can be dropped outside of deep AL-only fantasy leagues.

Twins | Phil Hughes, Trevor May to DL

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 10:43:44 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (knee) and RP Trevor May (back) are headed to the 15-day disabled list Friday, June 10, and SP Kyle Gibson (back) will be activated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Gibson is an AL-only option for now as he was smoked in his first few starts. Hughes has been awful as well and hasn't been the pitcher he was in 2014. You can cut bait outside of AL-only leagues. May was spectacular to begin the season, but he fell flat afterwards. With Glen Perkins (shoulder) on the mend, May probably missed the boat on the closer opening. He's worth having in AL-only leagues for K's, but that's about it.

Twins | Phil Hughes injured

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 04:05:37 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (knee) had to be helped off the field in the ninth inning Thursday, June 9, against the Miami Marlina. Hughes took a line drive off his left knee and left the game. An MRI will be performed Friday, June 10. Initial X-rays were negative.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes was 1-7 with an ERA just under 6.00 and had gone to the bullpen. He did make a spot start or two in an emergency, but that ERA and bad record have about killed his fantasy value for the time being.

Twins | Kyle Gibson scratched, Phil Hughes in

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 11:56:14 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Kyle Gibson (back) has been scratched from his start Thursday, June 2, because of back stiffness. SP Phil Hughes will pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Sub out Gibson where you can Thursday, and especially in daily contests. He has a 6.10 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP through four starts this season, so at this point, it is best to leave Gibson to deep mixed and AL-only formats until he finds his form on the mound, especially because of his underwhelming 5.9 career K/9. Hughes had been relegated to the bullpen because of his struggles (5.74 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 5.1 K/9 through 10 starts), so there isn't a lot to like about him in any fantasy format Thursday.

Twins | Phil Hughes headed for bullpen

Mon, 30 May 2016 22:53:18 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes will head to the bullpen when SP Kyle Gibson (shoulder) returns from the bullpen Thursday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes has been atrocious this season, and he isn't worth hanging onto in most fantasy formats at this point. DFS players need not bother with him anymore, either.

Mariners | Chris Iannetta not starting Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 16:20:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta is not in the starting lineup Saturday, May 28, against the Minnesota Twins. C Steve Clevenger is starting and batting eighth against Twins SP Phil Hughes.

Fantasy Tip: It is Iannetta's turn to sit as part of a platoon with Clevenger, who carries no fantasy value with a .171 batting average this season. The Mariners' catching duo isn't lightning lineups on fire.

Mariners | Franklin Gutierrez in Saturday lineup

Sat, 28 May 2016 16:08:23 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez will be in the lineup Saturday, May 28, against the Minnesota Twins. Gutierrez will bat seventh against Twins SP Phil Hughes.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is hitting .219-3-9 this season but is showing signs of warming up at the plate. He has a .385-2-4 mark in the past week, including a double. Is it worth inserting Gutierrez in your daily or annual lineup? Wait a bit and see if this warmup is longer-lasting before you act.

Twins | Phil Hughes won't miss any starts

Thu, 19 May 2016 18:19:59 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes (shoulder) felt fine during his bullpen session and is expected to make his scheduled start versus the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, May 22. He has been bothered by fatigue in his right shoulder over his last four starts.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes is 1-6 with a 5.70 ERA through his first eight outings this season and should not be viewed as a recommended fantasy option against Toronto.
