Giants | Hunter Pence swinging whiffle bat

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 17:00:06 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) has been swinging a whiffle bat, according to Giants head coach Bruce Bochy, Thursday, April 16. Pence remains without a timetable for a return, and he will need an extended rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) needs to be stashed on all rosters in leagues with disabled list spots and even deeper leagues without the extra roster space. OF Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) continues to fill in and can be worthy of FantasyScore consideration against right-handed pitching.

Giants | Hunter Pence has no timetable

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 16:49:27 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) does not have a timetable for his return, and he'll under X-rays to gauge his progress.

Fantasy Tip: Pence is expected to be out for a while longer, and he'll likely need an extended rehab assignment before making his season debut in San Francisco. Until then, Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will continue to see the majority of playing time in right field. Blanco can be useful at FantasyScore in the right matchups, mainly against righty pitchers.

Giants | Hunter Pence not close to rehab assignment

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 10:39:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) is unlikely to start a minor league rehab assignment this week, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Pence needs to build up before facing live pitching.

Fantasy Tip: That means you can kiss the idea of Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) returning in April goodbye. Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will continue to serve as the club's starting right fielder in the meantime. He is, at best, a matchup play at FantasyScore.

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 14:11:07 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($2,000, 4% of cap) is at least one month away from baseball activities, so keep him off your lineup until he comes back. In the meantime, Gregor Blanco ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) will likely man the fort.

Giants | Hunter Pence has cast removed

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 13:04:37 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (wrist) had his cast removed Friday, April 3, and he's about 10-14 days away from swinging a bat.

Fantasy Tip: Pence would need about a week of baseball activities after that before going on a rehab assignment. A rehab assignment could last two weeks or more since it'll be his spring training. Keep an eye on his progress, but avoid him for the first month of the season on FantasyScore.

Giants | Brandon Belt to play some outfield?

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 16:27:05 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt is being discussed as an option to play the outfield in the absence of OF Hunter Pence (arm) and OF Angel Pagan (back), according to manager Bruce Bochy. If Belt plays in the outfield, it opens the possibility for C Buster Posey to play more first base. Backup Cs Hector Sanchez and Andrew Susac would get more time with Posey at first. Other outfield options include 1B Travis Ishikawa, OF Juan Perez, OF Justin Maxwell, INF Matt Duffy and 3B Adam Duvall.

Fantasy Tip: Belt is already a middle-round breakout candidate, and adding outfield eligibility would only further enhance his fantasy value.

Giants | Hunter Pence injury update

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 16:14:53 -0800

Updating previous reports, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (forearm) had X-rays confirming a non-displaced ulnar fracture. He's expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Pence's timetable for recovery would keep him out through at least the beginning of April. The missed time could also result in a slow start when he's able to return to the diamond. Fantasy gamers in standard mixed leagues should wait until the middle rounds before selecting and stashing Pence.

Giants | Hunter Pence out six to eight weeks?

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 15:46:34 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (forearm) feared he had sustained a fractured left forearm, when he was hit by a pitch Thursday, March 5. The typical recovery time for a non-displaced ulnar fracture is six to eight weeks, but the Giants will wait until they review the X-rays to announce a recovery timeline.

Fantasy Tip: A mid-April return sounds like a best-case scenario. With the potential of setbacks and a rehab stint, Pence beginning his season around May 1 seems more reasonable. While his fantasy stock will obviously plummet, he could still return plenty of value as a late middle round stash candidate. Continue to check back for updates and an official timetable for Pence's recovery. The injury leaves a hole in the outfield for San Fran, and their options aren't currently worthy of attention in the majority of fantasy formats. Expect Gregor Blanco, Travis Ishikawa and Juan Perez to battle for playing time with Pence sidelined.

Giants | Bad news for Hunter Pence

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 15:19:28 -0800

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (forearm) likely has a broken bone in his forearm, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Until there is an official update on the severity of the injury, it would be unwise to jump to conclusions. Still, this doesn't project favorably for Pence's fantasy stock. Continue to check back for updates, but a best-case scenario is likely an early-April return, if Pence has a broken bone in his forearm.

Giants | Hunter Pence headed for X-rays

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 14:55:14 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hand) will undergo X-rays on his hand, after he was hit by a pitch Thursday, March 5, the team announced.

Fantasy Tip: The immediacy of the X-rays is mildly concerning, and there is potential this could be a serious injury for Pence. Make sure to check back for an official update. Pence has been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball, and he contributes across all five categories. Over the past three seasons, Pence has averaged 95 runs, 24 home runs, 92 RBI and 13 stolen bases with a .271 batting average. Oddly, despite his excellent production, he is usually available into the middle rounds of drafts.
