Giants | Hunter Pence likely out two months

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 14:49:06 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) is expected to miss eight weeks following surgery to repair his hamstring tendon which is completely torn from the bone.

Fantasy Tip: Pence is a stash candidate in all formats after his solid start to the season (27 runs, seven home runs, 36 RBI and .298/.375/.486 slash line) and track record. Expect the Giants to take a committee approach in left field going forward with Jarrett Parker, Mac Williamson, Kelby Tomlinson and Brandon Belt all in the mix. However, Parker is likely the best fantasy target given his pedigree and power upside, and he is an immediate grab in deep mixed and NL-only leagues with upside to also have an impact in shallower leagues.

Giants | Hunter Pence's injury severe

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 08:37:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence's (hamstring) hamstring injury is considered severe, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Surgery has not been mentioned at this point, but Bochy said the team's orthopedist has not looked at Pence's MRI at this point.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Pence will be out for longer than two weeks, so owners should keep an eye out for a possible timetable. Jarrett Parker likely will start in right field for now, but Angel Pagan or Gregor Blanco could take over the spot once Pagan returns from the disabled list. Pagan and Blanco should be used in deeper mixed leagues if they receive regular playing time. Parker has some value in NL-only leagues and some deeper mixed league for owners looking for power.

Giants | Hunter Pence placed on DL

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 08:16:02 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, June 2, because of a left hamstring strain. The team also recalled OF Mac Williamson from Class AAA Sacramento.

Fantasy Tip: Jarrett Parker is the leading candidate to start in right field for now. He can be a short-term option in NL-only leagues as well as some deeper mixed leagues because of his power potential. Angel Pagan is making progress from his injury and probably will rejoin the starting lineup as a possible replacement for Pence. He should be a solid starting candidate in most leagues. Williamson probably will receive some playing time over the next few weeks but is not a strong fantasy option.

Giants | Hunter Pence may go on DL

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 05:17:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his hamstring injury Thursday, June 2, and manager Bruce Bochy said Pence likely will need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see what Pence's MRI shows, but there is a good chance that he will miss at least a few games because of the injury. Jarrett Parker is the most likely candidate to replace Pence in the lineup and should be a solid option in NL-only leagues, but owners in mixed leagues probably should look at other players.

Giants | Hunter Pence leaves early

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 16:58:04 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) had to leave the game Wednesday, June 1, against the Atlanta Braves after appearing to reinjure his right hamstring. With two outs in the fourth inning, Pence hit a slow roller to third. He pulled up about two-thirds of the way to first base and grabbed the back of his right leg. He would be escorted off the field and replaced by OF Jarrett Parker.

Fantasy Tip: This isn't good, as Pence previously missed five games in the latter half of May with a right hamstring strain. With that in mind, it wouldn't be a surprise at all if the veteran went on the disabled list as a result of the ailment. Parker would get the biggest boost, but hasn't really done anything just yet to warrant being picked up in most leagues.

Giants | Brandon Belt, Hunter Pence playing Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 10:28:35 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt (ankle) and OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) are back in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Eddie Butler Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Both players have favorable matchups this afternoon. Belt is hitting .311 on the road this season and is 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in his career versus Butler. Pence is batting .301 with three home runs and 14 RBI this month and is 2-for-2 with a double against Butler.

Giants | Brandon Belt, Hunter Pence remain out

Fri, 27 May 2016 14:33:58 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt (ankle) and OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) remain out of the starting lineup Friday, May 27. C Trevor Brown is starting at first base and hitting eighth, while OF Jarrett Parker is in right field and batting seventh against Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood.

Fantasy Tip: Both Belt and Pence are considered day-to-day and could return to the lineup as soon as tomorrow. Get them both back into starting lineups everywhere when they're ready. The young Parker has serious power upside (23 homers last year in minors), so he's worth a cheap flier in DFS. Brown has surprised with four home runs in 56 at-bats as the backup catcher. His upside is limited low in the order, but you can do worse as a low-end catcher to save salary cap space tonight.

Giants | Hunter Pence still resting

Wed, 25 May 2016 10:29:39 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) remains out of the starting lineup Wednesday, May 25. OF Gregor Blanco is starting in right field again and is batting seventh against San Diego Padres SP James Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco doesn't have much power and is limited fantasy-wise hitting lower in the order, but he does have a .353 career average with four RBI in 19 career plate appearances against Shields. Consider Blanco a low-end sleeper pick in DFS.

Giants | Hunter Pence being cautious

Tue, 24 May 2016 16:22:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) isn't hitting at all Tuesday, May 24, and he plans to let his hamstring heal. Pence thinks he can return to the lineup Friday, May 27, but he won't say for sure.

Fantasy Tip: Pence had a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning Monday night and had the game-winning hit, so his injury isn't too serious. But he and the Giants don't want to make it worse, so he might be out until Friday. Plan accordingly. In the meantime, Jarrett Parker and Gregor Blanco should see starts in the outfield with Angel Pagan on the DL. Both players can return decent value in daily games, with Parker having more of a power stroke. Blanco becomes and option for depth in deep mixed and NL-only leagues with Pagan hurt.
