Giants | Hunter Pence hits in cage

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 16:14:33 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) took soft toss in the cages Friday, April 24, and manager Bruce Bochy thinks Pence will be playing in minor league games by next Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) won't be ready by May 1, but he could be ready to return not far after that. In the meantime, Justin Maxwell ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has impressed Bruce Bochy enough to see regular playing time in right field over Gregor Blanco. Maxwell, however, is, at best, a flyer at FantasyScore as a matchup play.

Giants | Hunter Pence graduates to wooden bat

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 13:06:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) graduated to hitting off a tee with a wooden bat Thursday, April 23. It will be awhile before he is cleared to take batting practice, and after that, he will have to be cleared again to face live pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is likely closer to a month away from returning than two weeks. But fantasy owners should continue to be patient and stash him in all formats. He is a rare contributor who is capable of tipping the scales in all fantasy categories. However, it is worth noting he is returning from an arm injury, and it could negatively impact his hitting ability. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery progress and a more concrete return timeline.

Giants | Hunter Pence plays some catch

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 11:40:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) played catch Wednesday, April 22, but still had pain when he turns his wrist. His bone is close to being fully healed.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) won't be back by May 1, as it's taking him a little longer to heal. Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) and Justin Maxwell ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will continue to switch off in right field in Pence's absence. Maxwell has started the last three games. Neither outfielder is a great FantasyScore play, and you'll want to ride the matchups.

Giants | Hunter Pence won't return May 1

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 16:39:02 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) is recovering slowly, according to manager Bruce Bochy, Tuesday, April 21, and won't return by his initial target date of May 1. OF Gregor Blanco will continue to receive the bulk of starts in right field.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is a career .257-hitter but his average is down to .225 to begin the 2015 season. Blanco isn't worth owning in season-long leagues, but will be worth occasional FantasyScore usage against right-handed pitchers, due to his .259 career average against RHPs.

Giants | Hunter Pence swinging whiffle bat

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 17:00:06 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) has been swinging a whiffle bat, according to Giants head coach Bruce Bochy, Thursday, April 16. Pence remains without a timetable for a return, and he will need an extended rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) needs to be stashed on all rosters in leagues with disabled list spots and even deeper leagues without the extra roster space. OF Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) continues to fill in and can be worthy of FantasyScore consideration against right-handed pitching.

Giants | Hunter Pence has no timetable

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 16:49:27 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) does not have a timetable for his return, and he'll under X-rays to gauge his progress.

Fantasy Tip: Pence is expected to be out for a while longer, and he'll likely need an extended rehab assignment before making his season debut in San Francisco. Until then, Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will continue to see the majority of playing time in right field. Blanco can be useful at FantasyScore in the right matchups, mainly against righty pitchers.

Giants | Hunter Pence not close to rehab assignment

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 10:39:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (arm) is unlikely to start a minor league rehab assignment this week, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Pence needs to build up before facing live pitching.

Fantasy Tip: That means you can kiss the idea of Pence ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) returning in April goodbye. Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will continue to serve as the club's starting right fielder in the meantime. He is, at best, a matchup play at FantasyScore.

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 14:11:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (wrist) was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($2,000, 4% of cap) is at least one month away from baseball activities, so keep him off your lineup until he comes back. In the meantime, Gregor Blanco ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) will likely man the fort.

Giants | Hunter Pence has cast removed

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 13:04:37 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (wrist) had his cast removed Friday, April 3, and he's about 10-14 days away from swinging a bat.

Fantasy Tip: Pence would need about a week of baseball activities after that before going on a rehab assignment. A rehab assignment could last two weeks or more since it'll be his spring training. Keep an eye on his progress, but avoid him for the first month of the season on FantasyScore.

Giants | Brandon Belt to play some outfield?

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 16:27:05 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt is being discussed as an option to play the outfield in the absence of OF Hunter Pence (arm) and OF Angel Pagan (back), according to manager Bruce Bochy. If Belt plays in the outfield, it opens the possibility for C Buster Posey to play more first base. Backup Cs Hector Sanchez and Andrew Susac would get more time with Posey at first. Other outfield options include 1B Travis Ishikawa, OF Juan Perez, OF Justin Maxwell, INF Matt Duffy and 3B Adam Duvall.

Fantasy Tip: Belt is already a middle-round breakout candidate, and adding outfield eligibility would only further enhance his fantasy value.
