Nationals | Short outing for Gio Gonzalez

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 17:30:28 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez pitched a season-low three innings in his sixth straight loss, allowing six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has been shelled on a routine basis recently. His solid strikeout numbers make him worth holding on to in NL-only formats, but feel free to hunt for better options in mixed leagues.

Padres | Yangervis Solarte starting Sunday

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 12:34:05 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B/3B Yangervis Solarte will play third base and bat fourth against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez on Sunday, June 19. INF Adam Rosales will draw a start in place of 2B/3B Ryan Schimpf at second base and hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Solarte has cooled considerably since coming off the disabled list in late May and is mired in a 2-for-29 slump over his last 10 games. There is some hope he could break out of that today given he is batting .333 against southpaws this season, but he's going to be a hard sell against Gonzalez. Outside of NL-only or the deepest mixed leagues, feel free to sit both Solarte and Rosales.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez fans nine

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 19:52:51 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez yielded three runs on five hits and a season-high tying four walks while striking out nine en route to a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Owners likely knew Gonzalez cannot continue his torrid start (3-1, 1.86 ERA through his first eight starts), but it has been a rough go for him since (0-4, 7.45). On the plus side, his strikeout numbers have picked up a bit during his rough stretch; he has fanned at least eight in each of his last three outings after only doing so twice previously. Gonzalez stand a good chance of ending his five-start winless streak against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, however, so keep him active.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez whiffs 10 in loss Thursday

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 19:39:27 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez (3-5) allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings in a loss to the Chicago White Sox Thursday, June 9, with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: The 30-year-old Gonzalez is averaging a strikeout per inning through 71 frames this year but has dropped four consecutive decisions. He should be viewed as a risky play for his next outing versus the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, June 14.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong out of Saturday lineup

Sat, 28 May 2016 15:38:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the lineup Saturday, May 28, against the Washington Nationals. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start and bat seventh against Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Wong gets the night off because of the lefty vs. lefty matchup. Although Gyorko has decent numbers in the past week and on the road, his numbers against the Nationals suggest you may be better off leaving Gyorko on the bench for the night.

Cardinals | Matt Adams out Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 14:50:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (back) is out of the starting lineup Saturday, May 28, for a second straight game. 3B Matt Carpenter will play first and lead off against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez, and 3B Greg Garcia will take Carpenter's spot at third and bat eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Adams has said he might be available for pinch-hit duty, which suggests the injury may not be serious. If so that's a good thing because back problems can cause hitters great headaches. Carpenter is worth mid-range consideration from the leadoff position, while Garcia carries little fantasy value.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez has rough outing

Mon, 23 May 2016 22:19:07 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez allowed seven runs on 10 hits in five innings against the New York Mets Monday, May 23, to suffer his second loss of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts this season but has allowed 12 runs in the other two games. He is scheduled to face the St. Louis Cardinals in his next start and should be a decent option in most leagues.

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez allowed one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings against the New York Mets Wednesday, May 18, to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out five batters and walked one in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his first eight games this season and currently has a 1.86 ERA. He is scheduled to face the New York Mets again in his next start and should be a fine starting option in all leagues.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez hit in leg

Sat, 14 May 2016 05:10:48 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez (leg) was hit by a ball in the lower leg during the game against the Miami Marlins Friday, May 13, but was able to stay in the game. Gonzalez allowed two runs on six hits in five innings during the game. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Gonzalez will be fine since he stayed in the game, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He is scheduled to face the New York Mets in his next start and could be an attractive starting candidate in some daily fantasy leagues.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez getting ahead

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:49:47 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez has a career-high first-pitch strike percentage of 64.1% this year. Gonzalez has also improved his walk rate (6.8%) in his first four starts of the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings. His improved control is certainly notable and could lead to a surprising year. It's still early, and a couple disaster outings could skew the numbers, but Gonzalez is worth watching for now and should be owned in shallow mixed leagues if he's still available.
