Astros | Chris Carter aiming for fewer strikeouts

Tue, 11 Mar 2014 08:30:16 -0700

Houston Astros DH Chris Carter is working to cut down on his strikeout problem, chiefly by attacking pitches in the strike zone more frequently, regardless of count. He's 8-for-26 (.308) in the Grapefruit League this spring with three doubles, a home run and four RBI. Manager Bo Porter said Carter is picking up the ball better out of the pitcher's hand and has laid off pitches he would've hacked at last season.

Fantasy Tip: Carter drafters should pick him primarily for his ability to leave the yard, which is still excellent. Any BA improvement will be gravy and shouldn't be a guaranteed inclusion in what he offers.

Astros | Chris Carter offers flexibility

Wed, 22 May 2013 19:52:15 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said Wednesday, May 22, that he likes to use 1B Chris Carter at first base and 1B Carlos Pena as the designated hitter, even though Pena is the better defensive player, because he enjoys the option of moving Carter to the outfield late in games if needed.

Astros | Chris Carter to remain everyday player

Mon, 06 May 2013 16:40:23 -0700

Houston Astros OF Chris Carter will remain an everyday player, but he'll likely spend more time at first base and designated hitter now, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow.

Fantasy Tip: With the Astros' outfield roster shuffle Monday, J.D. Martinez should receive regular playing time now that he's back from the disabled list, and he's a target for AL-only leaguers. Robbie Grossman, Jimmy Paredes and Trevor Crowe will likely battle for playing time for the other outfield spots, along with Brandon Barnes, if Carter isn't starting in the outfield. Grossman, Paredes and Crowe are all switch-hitters, too, so the playing time could be very fluid, and Bo Porter may choose to ride the hot hand.

Astros | J.D. Martinez to be tested in RF

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 12:24:15 -0800

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said OF J.D. Martinez will be tested in right field this spring, even though he's played almost exclusively in left field in his career. OF Chris Carter will be given every chance to win the starting job in left field. "He played a lot of right field coming up and he has a strong arm," Porter said. "He has good range and it also allows us, as the transition takes place, we want to get a look at Carter in field. This allows us to look at him, (Justin) Maxwell and J.D. all in the outfield at the same time."
