Pirates | Michael Morse designated for assignment

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 10:34:29 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Michael Morse was designated for assignment Wednesday, April 13, and RP A.J. Schugel was selected from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Morse had a rough season in 2015 (.231 average, just five home runs), and he hasn't recovered since. His absence will mean more playing time off the bench for Sean Rodriguez, but Rodriguez isn't anything more than bench material in NL-only formats.

Pirates | Matt Joyce leading off

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 07:33:19 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Matt Joyce is leading off Tuesday, April 12, with 1B John Jaso out of the lineup. 1B Michael Morse is hitting eighth in place of Jaso at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Joyce is 5-for-18 (.278) with a homer and four RBIs against Anibal Sanchez and is worth the flyer again today in DFS. Morse is worth a cheap, low-end flyer as well.

Pirates | Michael Morse not ready to return

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 10:57:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Michael Morse (hamstring) is expected to sit out a few more games because of his hamstring injury.

Fantasy Tip: Morse is expected to be part of a platoon at first base when he is healthy. He will receive limited at-bats this season and probably should only be an option in NL-only leagues.

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:18:31 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B/OF Michael Morse (hamstring) left the game Thursday, March 24, after clutching his hamstring on a slide into a base.

Fantasy Tip: Morse was a very speculative draft pick to begin with, and this may keep him off draft boards entering the season.

Pirates | Michael Morse, John Jaso to platoon

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 16:15:33 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1Bs Michael Morse and John Jaso will platoon at first base this year, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso is a fine target in NL-only and two-catcher leagues, mainly for his on-base skills and contact-oriented approach. His limited eligibility (DH) also drops his value in the majority of leagues. Morse is even less attractive in the same formats with declining power and contact rates.

Pirates | Jason Rogers, Michael Morse to compete

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 08:45:59 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1Bs Jason Rogers and Michael Morse will compete for playing time at first base next season. Rogers had 22 starts with the Milwaukee Brewers last year at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers hit .296 (45-for-152) with four home runs and 16 RBI in just 86 games for Milwaukee last year. With more playing time, Rogers' average will surely come down, but he could approach 15 home runs. He's more contact-inclined than Morse, who struggled with a .231 average and just five homers with two teams in 2015. Both first basemen are merely corner infield depth in deep mixed and NL-only universes.
