Panthers | Will let process play out with Greg Hardy

Fri, 12 Sep 2014 12:03:18 -0700

The Carolina Panthers will not discipline DE Greg Hardy at this point after being found guilty of assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend until after an appeal is heard. "We are in a process and we're letting the process play its way out," coach Ron Rivera said. "Because of that, we're following through with the situation, set of circumstances. We're not trying to do anything below board or way above board. "We're trying to go through the process as we understand it. We're going to do the best we can. The players have handled it tremendously well. It's been really hard on them I know, as far as those things. But again, get on the football field and be able to handle those situations, circumstances, that's what the guys have done."

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 06:10:41 -0700

Newton did not participate in any team drills after taking three and five-step drops on passes to wide receivers. "I think I'm on schedule to make a speedy recovery," Newton said after practice. "We are in the last curve and I am just trying to be smart about it, do everything that the trainers ask of me and more and see where that gets me."

Panthers | Ron Rivera becoming more aggressive

Tue, 15 Oct 2013 10:56:02 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera acknowledges that he has become much more aggressive in going for it on fourth downs after the team's heartbreaking loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. Rivera was the second-most conservative coach in the league in his first 34 games in trying fourth-down conversions. "It's about trying to make a statement," Rivera said of his fourth-down risks. "And it's probably also honestly one of the things that I've learned. Sometimes you play by the book and you miss opportunities. It's been an enlightening situation for me. One of the things that I want to try to do is to make sure we are in the best position to win. And the other realization is kicking field goals is obviously not good enough." Rivera has had his team go for it on fourth-and-one four times in the last three games, and they have converted on three of those plays.

Fantasy Tip: This probably doesn't make a ton of difference in the long run, but the more confidence Rivera has in his offense to sustain drives, the more confidence Cam Newton and Co. will likely have in executing their plays.

Panthers | Not keen on up-tempo offense

Fri, 13 Sep 2013 10:02:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said he's not partial to running a high-octane, up-tempo offense in the NFL. The Panthers and QB Cam Newton ran a league-low 50 total plays in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. "I'm not quite sure what the real, true benefit is other than having a few more plays," Rivera said. "People say, 'Well, you get 75, 80 plays going faster.' You also can go 1-2-3 and out faster and put the other team back on the field faster. So which is it?" Newton also attempted only three passes of more than 10 yards down the field.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is playing in a more conservative, ball-control offense that has limited his fantasy value. However, the Panthers realize this and are planning on opening up their playbook a little more. Newton should have more success in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills defense.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is on schedule in his rehab from offseason ankle surgery and sounded optimistic about the possibility of Stewart being ready for Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart has not been able to practice since training camp started because he had surgery on both of his ankles this offseason. His status for the start of the season is uncertain and likely will have to share carries with DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert when he is ready to play. Stewart should be considered as a flex option in leagues.
